I've got nothing against Ukraine nor any reason to represent Ukrainians in a bad light lol. Hope that clears it up a bit. Cheers mate.

Their generals were tribal leaders and thus were capable on meeting logistical needs on the fly while they were also provided with captured engineers which were crucial in capturing forts and of course like in this case building bridges/siege weaponry. Without the engineers work or the military capability of their generals the Mongols would have stayed an irrelevant group of nomadic tribes.

Tzun Tsu was right about the morale effects for having a retreat. - in the first battle, the Mongols were with their back to the river. So they could not really retreat. While the Hungarians had a "safe" camp to retreat too - And then again. the southern escape route being left seemingly open got people to flee - to be cut down.
@googane7755
@googane7755 4 жыл бұрын
This was a favourite by Subutai. Whenever the enemy ran to the safety of an encampment, he'd surround the position and pepper it with projectiles until all morale breaks in the defenders in which a convenient gap is left for them to flee. This is obviously a killing field where they would be hunted down like animals. He'd rather have the enemy flee in panic to be cut down in small groups rather than letting them stand and fight to the death to avoid extra casualties.

Yes, good point (there was also the Emperor Frederick who wanted to weaken Hungary because Bela stood by the Pope.) From what I have read Frederick and his mounted knights captured a group of Tatars that was raiding in the area of Gyor zupa (county) I would have to double check the exact place, these captured raiders turned up to be Cumans because Mongols (Tatars) employed all sorts of ethnicities from their conquered territories and sent them to the forefront to cause havoc before the main army swooped down. Frederick kept a few alive and brought them to Pest to show people "the enemy" Hungarians were already averse to Cumans because they continued to live their nomadic livestyle, pillaging, trampling orchards, fields, raping women, stealing cattle...Czecho-slovak historian Dvorak wrote in his Book (Stopy Davnej minulosti) that after the complains became too numerous, Bela tried to break up Cumans and spread them out across Hungary. (Initially he settled them between the river Moros and Koros - tributaries of river Tisa, because this marshy area wasn't populated.). Sadly it was too late. People were frightened and believed that Cumans living among them were on the side of Tatars and were turning against them so they killed Kotten. Of course this is just what Frederick and Bela's HUngarian enemies (whose lands were returned back to the crown) wanted. Frederick held grudge against Bela for the money he had to pay him over territorial squabble. At this point Frederick also understood that he was incapable to produce an heir, I imagine that was a huge thorn in his side, making him Frederick the Quarrelsome.

You mentioned a lot of important stuff that I missed from other videos, like the cumans and the hate from the nobility towards Béla. Very well done! A high quality video visually, and I was impressed with your research here. While I think your coverage of the reasons for the Mongol westward expansion could have been given more detail, as with the period after the defeat at Mohi (you do cover it in the cards at the end, and understandably there is a limit to have much information you can put in one video) the campaign itself was well covered. The context of the battle is very important to have clear to understand why it is important, and I think it is worth the effort to spend more time on that and shave a little bit off the battle itself (but that's just me, as someone who is more interested in the historical period rather than the actual battle) Perhaps a bit more on the army composition and fighting styles would be a good addition, and who is on each side and their significance, which makes it easier to relate to the impact of political factors on the campaigns. Not to mention showing which generals are on which side in a card perhaps of sorts? You mention Shiban at one point, one of Jochi's sons and Batu's brother, but I don't think had mentioned him prior to then, making him come out of nowhere somewhat. The pronunciation of the Mongolian names was perhaps a bit weak (Chinggis Khan, not Genghis!) but I did like that you said Pest properly! Overall nicely done, very impressive and I definitely look forward to more!

Amusing to see the battle of Legnica mentioned as a minor sideshow. In Polish historiography Legnica was THE battle fought against the Mongol invasion. Most Poles will never have heard of Mohi, even though it was 5 to 10 times bigger and far more important in the campaign as a whole.

These were not effective due to their short range, extremly heavyness and cumbersome transportability. I witnessed one during work, even helped to prepare the shot. It shoot a human head sized stone to one hundred and fifty meters. Then it took almost ten minutes to shoot again. So this machine could kill one or two man in every ten minutes.

Sun Tzu said that you should always leave the enemy and escape route and this battle perfectly shows why. The Hungarians tapped the Mongols against the river, where they fought hard knowing that they would probably die if they tried to flee. The Mongols, on the other hand, left an escape for the Hungarians so they would be tempted to take it. Enemies with no escape will hold their ground ferociously because it’s their only chance of survival while enemies with a possible escape will be tempted to break and run.

Well done for not simply repeating the myth that the Mongols withdrew because their Khan died. The general consensus seems to be that it was a combination of poor weather (leading to starvation amongst the horses), heavy casualties, stalemated sieges and lack of plunder.

Just a small information: IV. Bela lost all battles where he personally attended. And his lack of military powress was well known even when he became the king, and more of that, he alianated all his faters supporters. So that is the main reasons of the loss of battle of Muhi (not Mohi!). However the mongol army could only to cross the Danube on winter: the nobility (who werent at Muhi) has the power to controll the potential crossings. But thw winter of 1241/1242 was cold, and the Danube froze...

Good video, as a hungarian history teacher, im impressed :) I think you should change the hungarian capital to Buda. Pest was insignificant in the medieval Hungarian Kingdom. There was an enligsh priest names Robert in the mongolain army, who helped the mongolians to write letters to Bela IV, it is a very good letter, i can suggest to read it to everyone, who knows hungarian language and loves history :) Esztergom was a very importtant medieval town in Hungary (seat of the main Archbishop of Hungary) was never taken, because of its walls and italian mercenary crossbowmen defending it. That can be the main factor, that encouraged Bela to negotiate the nobles to build fortresses everywhere, and gave them land again (his fater gave a lot of land to the nobles, and Bela stopped it, that was the main reason of the coflict between the king and his highlords), Also, most of the videos what i saw forgets about Mongolian invasion in Hungary (what we call "Tatárjárás") forgets to mention the fact that Ögödei dies in 1241, and Batu Khan wants to be the Great Khan. That is certanly one of the main reasons of the mongolian retreat.
@Danci1337
@Danci1337 6 жыл бұрын
Well, as far as i'm aware, or atleast was taught in school (also Hungarian). Hungary did have fortresses, but made out of wood, which ofcourse was not capable of fending off a real army, because they could just set it on fire. And surely the Mongolian army was more than capable of developing good tactics, given they crossed a whole continent to get here. Also would like to point out that in the game that i'm sure many are familiar with, well Age of Empires 2. The invasion is included too and also explained why the Mongolias retreated, just as you've mentioned above. :)

Good points about Esztergom, Buda, however, became important only after the Tatar invasion when Bela had a stone palace built there on the hills, so you have it reversed. Up until 1240 Pest was more important than Buda. And yes Esztergom had a stone castle and was able to fend of the Tatars but the town itself under the royal palace was destroyed. As the video mentions there were several reasons why Tatars left, the main one was logistics, the Tatar idiots killed the peasants, destroyed everything and had nothing to feed their horses. The Chinese had to teach them that killing everyone wasn't actually in their best interest. The rains feeding the marshlands and the mountains made it also difficult for them to maintain a strong foothold.Their second attempt at the end of 13th century ended in utter failure.
