Battle of Vaslui - It is the dead of winter, January 10th 1475. On this day Stefan III, the Prince of Moldavia, leads an army of 30.000 Christian warriors into battle against an invading army of more than 50.000 Ottomans, commanded by Suleiman Pasha, the governor-general of Rumelia. Suleiman was sent by the Ottoman Sultan, Mehmed II - the Conqueror, to permanently crush all resistance and re-establish Ottoman control over Moldavia, after it's ruler Prince Stefan III stopped paying tribute and began hostile operations against the Ottoman Empire. Suleiman's army is confident of victory, but the crafty Prince of Moldavia will soon become one of the few men in history who faced such unfavorable odds and yet managed to seriously threaten the mighty Ottoman Empire. Years of conflict between the Princedom of Moldavia and the Ottoman Empire has reached the snow-covered plain near the town of Vaslui , and a battle known locally as the Battle of the High Bridge is about to begin...

HistoryMarche An interesting clip but Moldova which was taken by Stefan from Petru Aron It was more bigger, Transylvania was an autonomous kingdom and the "kingdom of Hungary" was much smaller and under no circumstances incorporates modern austria and the other Balkan territories, there are some mistakes in video and please do not use those contaminated maps about the "kingdom of Hungary". Thank you

The eye naturally thinks darker parts of the map are land. Stop making the sea darker than the land. It's really annoying. Especially when you contour the map to look like land is of a lower altitude than the sea...

In 1475, king Matthias Corvinus ruled the Kingdom of Hungary, who also conquered Austria, Bohemia and other nearby regions. The map presented here it's accurate. Transylvania was a "voievodat" under hungarian control. It had some kind of autonomy, but it was not independent, nor a kingdom.

My ancestors left Bulgaria after the Ottomans invasion and started a new live in Moldavia. Unbelieveable that this Guy probably saved my family tree. I watched already dozen videos of this channel and Ștefan cel Mare seems to be on another level. Destroying own territory against the enemy was in Napoleon against Kutuzov. Cavalry harrassment back and forth was used by mongols against romans or muslims against crusaders. Attacking the enemy while they are on the mushy ground. I think that was also used for example by William Wallace against heavy English cavalry. The bridge attack to cut off the enemy. Using drums to adopt the enemy for the attack and then fake it the next time. I have now huge respect for Ștefan and thank you for this video!

When you say "defeated Poland" for instance, it means that he actually took down the goddamn kingdom, which he hasn't. So, he didn't really defeat Poland, or Hungary, or the Ottoman empire, he just repelled their invasions. You go too sleep mate. Besides, you seem to not be able to get my point. I didn't compare anyone, I just said that there were many kings who were personally fighting in battle, and I gave Henry the 5th as a random exampls, I didn't say Henry was better than Stephen, or the other way around. I totally agree with you, Dustin. By the way, his full historical name is Stefan the Great and the Saint as the Romanian Orthodox Church sanctified him for being the greatest Christian warrior of Romania and one of the bravest Holly Cross defenders of Europe in his time. We owe Stefan the Great to a great extent the fact we are still Christians in these parts of the world and we still speak our ancient version of Latin that is the Romanian language. Cheers!

@@RS-kt6is It's very easy to throw with empty words online. 1. Was Stefan the Great one of the greatest military personalities of the Romanian nation? And one of the greatest Christian military leaders, at least in his century? Yes, he was. 2. Was he a Romanian? Yes. Moldavians are Romanians, end of story. 3. Did he greatly contributed to the salvation of his state, Moldova, to avoid becoming the next Bosnia or Albania? No discussion about that, in all respects, security, culture, policy of alliances etc. 4. Was he sanctified by the Romanian Orthodox Church? The Orthodox Christians of whole nation pray to him. 5. Is the Romanian language a neo-Latin language, with 60% of the words coming form Latina vulgaris? I think it qualifies. I live in Suceava, the former capitol city of Moldavia, and during my school times, we learned a lot about Stephan the Great and those times. He was the best military strategist, hands down, and because of this, he ruled Moldavia for 47 years, being second after Carol I, who ruled for 48 years, in the late 1800's - early 1900's. Stephan had his share of losses (albeit a few), mainly because being heavily outnumbered. His battle and war strategies were superior to anyone else, Poles, Hungarians, even Franks and Gemanic people. Luck had never played any role, and the man fought over 50 major battles during his rule, and a bunch of smaller ones, losing only 2. He was the master of guerilla warfare, tactical and fake retreats, multiple front engagements, luring enemy troops, terrain strategist, etc. etc. He was hundreds of years ahead in terms of military startegy, this is why he managed to rule 47 years, a very small country (300-400k total population), having only 6-7k professional soldiers. Over 60% of his army was basically peasants (usually 10-15k, depending on the time of the conflict - Summer being harvest time). However, those peasants, after 4-5 major battles, became at least semi-professional soldiers, hence, his army, after 5 years, was mainly a professional army. He won a lot of battles being outnumbered 2 to 1, which in those times was a lot...but his professional soldiers outnumbered the enemy professional soldiers. Paired with guerilla warfare (his soldiers were extremely good at this), terrain advantage and multiple front engagements, it's no surprise that he managed to keep Moldavia undefeated for nearly 47 times. Even if the history books don't present him as a warrior, the man had war in his blood. He was present at every single battle...not sitting on a chair on a hill giving orders, but leading the troops. And this is how he died. An infected battle wound marked his end.

Stephan the Great was a military genius. He employed military tactics like guerilla warfare and tactical retreats on a whole new level. Hundreds of years ahead his time. Sure, guerilla warfare was used since before Roman Empire, but Stephan made it an art. The way he used guerrilla warfare was similar to Napoleonic Wars, 300 years later.

@XVRMEDIA
@XVRMEDIA 2 жыл бұрын
That was a Hungarian leader, Janos Hunyady. They don’t say that in Romanian history books because Ceausescu wanted Transylvania to have some heroic military leaders so as not to humiliate them when compared to Wallachia and Moldavia. They used his Romanianized name. The truth is that Transylvania never had a great military leader, people there were always serfs and they accepted their condition. Only the szekelys had pride and dignity and they fought alongside Wallachian and Moldavian leaders to gain freedom. The unification of Romania (1601), re-unification (1918) and liberation (September 1944) all came from the South and into Transylvania. Not the other way around.

That was the battle that stop Muslim expansion to Easter Europe, like forever, after his cousin Vlad "The Impaler"caused another Ottoman campaign to crumble in the dust during the night of 16-17 June 1462. Romanians were the stone that the ottomans could never chew, as Habsburgs and Russian Empire. We bent but we were never broke, a small and insignificant people, at the convergence of four "Grate Neighbors"(The Habsburg Empire, The Polish-Lithuanian Empire, The Ottoman Empire, and The Russian Tsarist Empire). Because of Roman heritage we knew the best how to use the Latin expression "Divide et impera", we used them against each other to assure our survival.

Just to mention, Bulgarians at that time were enslaved. "Bulgarian engineers" is an absurd. The peasant were forced to do all the job in the Empire and to pay all the taxes, so if you have to build a bridge probably Bulgarian peasants will do it. It is a bit similar to say that Nazi army was supported by Jewish engineers during 1944... In the video about Vlad Tsepesh it is the same. Bulgarians had no right to have weapons and serve in the army, or to have any kind of military forces. Few exceptions were made for guards of some very dangerous places in the Mountains. And Bulgarian rebellions or usual people always supported forces against Turkish, if they can.

Damn... If Walachia had staid loyal and if Hungary attacked aswell the Ottomans would of been pushed back. Imagine that right before the engagment the Wallachian 15k men army would rush at the Ottomans from behind as a suprise and the Moldovans would do their tactic used here. This would further decimate the Ottoma troops there. All while the Hungarians could of taken Bosnia and Northern Albania easilly, the Balkans had no other big Ottoman troop concentration. So you'd have the leftover Moldovan and Wallachian troops(35k or so) and the Hungarian quite vast army attacking barely defended areas all while the Mongols were crushing from behind. History could of veen changed with the Ottomans losing quite some land to the 3 powers.

Vlad the Impaler did that alone 15 years before. He raided Bulgaria and killed the Ottomans wherever his men found them. Well, no discrimination in fact, some "collaborators" were thrown in for good measure. He counted the heads (no time for impaling) also (around 26-28,000 if I recall correctly) as he'd explain to the king of Hungary in a letter, "excusing" himself about those burnt inside their homes whose heads couldn't be accounted for. And, as the Turkish chronicle mentions, the Turks hurried en masse to cross into Asia for fear of the Valahian Sheitan (the devil). So, it was doable, but after that you should expect a reaction. In those times you employed at most some mercenaries, no standing armies, so you needed another kind of strategy and long time commitment. But keeping the Ottoman empire outside Europe was doable.

When I see videos like this, I always wonder what the underdog was thinking before the battle. Was Stephen the Great sure of victory, despite being outnumbered, or was he thinking that he would need a lot of luck to win? I mean... a lot can go wrong when commanding an army. A whole lot!

This battle plan relied heavily on the weather. I wonder if he just took a gamble on the weather or if he knew for certain the weather was going to be foggy
@HistoryMarche
@HistoryMarche 6 жыл бұрын
The "fog factor" left an impression on me too throughout the creation process of this video. It almost seems clairvoyant. But what is certain is that Stefan relied heavily on the terrain - shallow valley between slopes of two hills, covered by dense forest and a river which the invader doesn't know well (where the crossings are etc.). Plenty of places to hide and create diversions. Stefan was familiar with this battlefield, this is where his father defeated the Poles in 1450, so it's reasonable to think that he chose this spot and tweaked his tactics accordingly. He definitely did his homework and adjusted well for the enemy he was fighting, while the same cannot be said for Suleiman Pasha. As for the fog, I tried to find out if this area was often foggy in the winter, but I can't say for sure. Whether or not Stefan counted on the fog beforehand, well that's an interesting thought. Fun fact though, according to my research, the fog was so thick on the day of the battle that the troops couldn't see beyond just a few meters, but I had to dilute the fog for the purpose of the video.

well during winter mainly due to two factors you usually get this type of weather in such places. 1) the shallow river bed keeps moisture which creates fog 2) temperature inversion occurs, keeping cold air in the valley thus the fog stay locked in low ground but keep in mind the fog was an impariment not just for the ottomans, thats why i believe stefans strategy didnt rely on the weather, strictly speaking on the fog, but rather on the geography of the place and the style of engagement practiced by the ottomans i.e. frontal massive push, relying on numbers. he funneled them through a narrow place and flanked them. he knew their large numbers will break the soil and create a muddy trap this is was a practice used by his predecesors all the way back to the dacians in the 1st-2nd century A.D. against the romans. there are at least two great battles i know that used the same strategy one of which is the battle of posada between basarab I of valahia and charles I of hungary, fought in november 1330. the other being maybe youll make a video of that as well :D

Glad you enjoyed the video. I'm not sure about the total losses in the Balkan and Carphathian region, but it's important to remember that, overall, the Ottomans were the world's superpower at this time, or were close to becoming one. Small states like Moldavia and Wallachia cold offer limited resistance and usually ended up being conquered by the Ottomans. Overall, the Ottomans were quite successful against European kingdoms for hundreds of years.

Unfortunately in 1484 Stephen the great lost the great cities of Akkerman and Chilia, his source of power. They were like city-states and were highly autonomous. Akkerman or Cetatea Alba had their own coin and had a powerful economy. They mounted independent expeditions in the nearby lands in Ukraine. Those two cities were similar somehow to the italian cities but on a smaller scale. After Stephen lost them, he sued for peace. I studied the fortress of Cetatea Alba and its architecture and it's impressive.

Osman Pasha had his army well entranched, his defensive positiones were on a hilltop, his army was only 1/2 of the joint Russian-Romanian forces - his chances to defend his line were very good. Ask anyone who understands millitary tactics and you'll get, more all less, the following answer: in order to successfully storm a well-fortified enemy possition, the attacking force must have: 1) superiority in numbers (at least 1 to 3, better 1 to 5), 2) higher fire power, 3)achieve full encirclement if possible, and cut enemy supply lines.4) achieve the element of surprise,5) outstanding intel, etc etc. For some unknown reason, the Russians began attacking the turks without achieving first the above-mentioned superiority. So, by no means it is due to Osman Pasa's merit, but thanks to the low professionalism of the Russian commanders that allowed the turks keep Plevna for so long.
