Criminals were often tortured to get confessions and God help anyone accused of witchcraft who couldn't escape to take refuge in a church. The church was very lenient about many things. No torture allowed because Moses Law forbids it. Something that most don't understand about the Salem witch trials is, the governor appointed to the colony held the trials and tortured the accused. He also had to allow any executions.
