The Arameans are still here! The increasing Aramean population within the Assyrian empire show the increasing number of Aramaic personal names and an increase of People within the Neo-Assyrian empire having Aramaic as a mother tounge. Even kingdoms such as Bit Bahiani still had their own king. Hadad-Yith'i was one such king. In a statue of him there are inscriptions in two languages. In the Akkadians language he is describes as a governor and in Aramaic he is described as their king. This shows that even though they paid tribute to the Assyrian king they (the Aramean in that area) still had their own king. Thank you for sharing, great video!

Actually, Arameans get a lot of attention. But they don't get credit for being Aramaic. The list includes Babylonians, Assyrians, Amorites, Canaanites, and Hebrews. All spoke variations of Aramaic. Assyrian and Babylonian palace communications continued to use Akkadian Cuneiform due to widespread knowledge of written Aramaic.

Canaanites , Amorites , Arameans , Hetites , Assyrians , Arabs , Hebrews , phoenicians are all semitic brother that branched off each other and developed slightly different languages due to geographic distance , except for the Zionist khazars that created conflict amongst all of us . Whether , you say shalamu liku , Shalom , Salam etc you are a semite and Abrahamic , before 1948 we were one nation called Palestine (southern Syria) and sham (northern Syria) , the northern levante and the southern levante later Jordan , Lebanon and Zionist Israel were curved out of Palestine and Syria .

@@canaanphil9172 I'm Palestinian Syrian myself and Syriac Aramean. To me as well, Syria is north Palestine and Palestine is southern Syria. al-Sham (means left but refers to the North) I wonder if the name is directly connected to the Semitic speaking people as al-Sham is our homeland. There were also two major tribes of Amorites, Beni Sama'el (again the North) and Beni Yaminu (you guessed it, the South referring to the area around Yemen) The Arameans (Ahlamu) were in a confederation with the northern Amorites.. so I wonder if they just merged into one and the name went through a metathesis (switching letters around) As for the Khazars well let's go further really.. many Turkic tribes were kicked out of east Asia by China and Mongols.. they went west and obliterated much of Assyrian and Aramean presence in the Middle East and central Asia and later took over the Arab world. For them being originally semi-nomads with their own religion, the Abrahamic faiths didn't originally matter to them. The Khazar Turk leadership chose Judaism for political reasons, many khazars themselves stayed pagans and later orthodox Christians or Muslims.

Syriac-arameans are not the ancient arameans. Population genetics studies have shown that Assyrians, Chaldeans and syriac-arameans are the same people, as individuals have a high genetic affinity with each other. Genetically, they are a fairly homogenous group of people. Aramaic was introduced to the Neo-Assyrian Empire via deportation of some of the ancient Arameans to the Assyrian heartland, located around Nineveh. The ancient Assyrians adopted this language as the lingua franca of the empire, since it had an easier alphabet to use than the old Akkadian language that the Assyrians used to speak and write. Eventually, Aramaic replaced Akkadian entirely in the Assyrian empire, so this is the language modern Assyrians speak today. However, the ancient Assyrians kept some loanwards and grammatical structure from Akkadian when switching over to Aramaic. Linguist Geoffrey Khan deduces that the dialects that modern Assyrians speak today is not a direct descendant of Syriac. Rather, it shows elements from Akkadian that are not present in other forms of Syriac. If the modern Assyrians were mainly descended from Arameans, then they would have a strong genetic affinity with the Syrians who are mostly descended from Arameans. However, this is clearly not the case here. In reality, Assyrians are genetically more closely related to Northern Iraqis, who are also likely descended mainly from the Assyrians and other indigenous peoples of Mesopotamia that had been Arabized, not ancient Levantines. Tl;dr the descendants of the arameans are the Syrians who ironically don’t speak Aramaic but arabic due to arabization while the “syriac-arameans” are the descendants of the Assyrians and speak Aramaic because it was the lingua Franca of their empire. I don’t mean to offend anyone but this is the truth.

Hi, thanks so much for stopping by, always great to hear from you! I agree with both of your points. Most scholars believe that the Aramaeans were the descendants of the Amorites. In terms of speakers of Aramaic, yes. With regard to ethnicity, that's a really interesting question. In the end I think that it depends on how you define Aramaean - is it just the ethnic group or all of the Aramaic speakers, which eventually were many in number as Aramaic became the lingua-franca of the region. Based on what I know, I'd say yes, there were probably more Aramaeans than Assyrians, at least initially, and they seem to have been more spread out, especially to the west. As for Chaldeans, yeah that would also be an interesting one to cover...I'll look into it! Thanks again, stay safe!

Hi Cy, I've only recently been introduced to your channel but very much liking what i'm seeing! I've just finished the Canaanite videos and now starting the Sumerian ones. What i like most about your videos is firstly the subject matter, i am really interested atm in Ancient bronze age (or even pre-bronze age) civilizations especially atm in the Middle East. But as i watch more i'm very interested to see what else is out there, i know you've done the Olmecs, Indus Valley and Bronze Age China but maybe you could do a world bronze age tour series? Where you compare the earliest civs from each continent / region? Just a thought. Another thing i wanted to let you know which i think sets you apart from other historical channels is your constant commitment to primary sources, you are always leading straight into an inscription, artefact or excavation, i also like that you read out accounts, so keep up the great work! One last thought is that, i dunno if you're going for this or others may like it, but i recommend you maybe work on the polish / styling of your thumbnails. I'm not saying do clickbait etc but honestly, initially i was reluctant to click on a vid cos i thought your thumbnail (mainly the lettering) looked a bit amateur or juvenile. I'm glad i did and your content is anything but amateur or juvenile but i think you'd benefit and get more viewers from maybe having a stylised / modern graphic depicting the civilisation and change the font of the lettering. Either way really enjoying the channel and think you're doing an amazing job and above all, one of the more illuminating history channels going round.

The first written mentioning of Arameans was in the story of prophet Abrahams life. Abrahams descendants married Arameans. Arameans are mentioned in the bible and Abraham was referred to as the wandering Aramean. Laban was Aramean in the bible. Prophet Abraham lived nearly 4000 years ago so Arameans have been around much earlier than 1000 bc.

I recently started reading the Bible to see if I can make any historical connections to the people, places, or events mentioned in there. It appears the biblical character Abraham may have been an Aramean who left "Ur Casidim" and had a stop in Haran (shown in the above map, an Aramean city). Isaac and Jacob married Aramean women from Abraham's "place of birth", which is disputed, some saying it is the Ur in Sumer and some saying it is Urfa modern Sanliurfa (in Turkey, right next to Haran and even the pre-historic Gobekli Tepe). To me Urfa makes more sense as it was more likely Arameans existed in that region at that time. Another thing is Abraham interacted with Philistines, which means that if he did exist it would have been after the Sea Peoples arrived in the Late Bronze age. And this throws the entire chronology of sequence of events in the bible into haywire since the Israelites were supposed to have been in Egypt for some 400 years prior to the exodus. Nevertheless, it's interesting to read an ancient book which speaks of these ancient peoples, cultures, places, and religions and to connect them to what we know from extra-biblical sources.
@Ninjakitsune978
@Ninjakitsune978 6 ай бұрын
I stumbled across that too. My guess is, that there were either Philistines BEFORE the Bronze age collapse, but they only rose to prominence later. Or They were a people group, that lived, where the Philistine lived later and as such were believed to be Philistines. I personally find the first theory more likely as we don't know nearly enough about the Bronze Age Collapse and the Sea People. What we know from the books of Judges and Samuel is, that the Isrealites couldn't work iron for quite a while, but the Phillistines could. This explains the odd weapon choices of the judges like ox pokers and donkey skulls. Also only King Saul and his son Jonathan had swords in his last battle. The Phillistines could have learned how to make iron weapons giving them an edge against their neighbors. Helping them rise to power until other nations learned the secret as well. I think, that the book of Judges happens during the Bronze Age Collapse as constant raids from different people groups devestate the area over and over again and the use of iron begins.
@Emcee_Squared
@Emcee_Squared 6 ай бұрын
@@Ninjakitsune978 well the one philistines were from greece or crete, and they were working iron there before the near east. The sea peoples may have brought knowledge of iron working with them, ushering in the iron age.

I think this video is good because it is important that someone takes on this topic. If the history of the Arameans were revealed, then the history of Europe would have to be rewritten. The origin of the Arameans can be deduced from the relationship of Abraham's descendants with the Arameans. It is known that Abraham came from Ur in Chaldea around 1900. This means Ur in the Caucasus, the Horpaxhad of the Horites. This means that the Arameans originally came from the headwaters of the Euphrates. An OT. prophet called the land of the Arameans Kir. This was the land of Ar named after the mountains of Ararrat. Hence the name Ar-ameans. The Arameans came from the land of the Aryans., Hor. One of their city's was haran. The Arameans were an extremely expansive people of 5 tribes: 1. Mash 2. Uz 3. Guti 4. Getea 5. Lud >>>Mash expanded south, establishing Damascus in Syria and Mari in Babylonia At that time around 1900 BC: the entire source area of the Euphrates and Tigris was named after Abraham's relative Nahor, Naharin, and was mainly inhabited by Arameans. 1750 BC. the Babylonians destroyed the Aramaic Mari so that the Arameans had to give way. They expanded into Egypt with Canaanites as Hyksos and ruled it for 100 years. Descendants of Mash also expanded into Asia Minor and founded Troy. According to old reports, after their defeat, the Trojans fled to all the peoples of Europe. The Franks are also said to have been Trojans in 445 BC. fled to northern Germany via the Ukraine after the 3rd Trojan War. They had a lot of wars with the Germans there and didn't even know their language. >>>Brygus, a son of Mash, expanded with his offspring across the Danube to the Balkans. 1200vC. When they came to Asia Minor from there with the Sea Peoples, they destroyed the kingdom of the Hatti and established the kingdom of the Phrygians. They came to southern Germany and built cities like Brigobanna = Beuren, and Brigantum = Brixante = Bregenz and Vindomagnum = Augsburg. The Brigantes, under pressure from Germanic peoples, moved on as Brigantes to Vindomoram in England. The Aramaic brigands were a warrior people, to this day we have the name Brigate for a military unit from them. >>>Uz became a seafaring people, they gave their name to the Azov Sea (lake uzov). There was the land of Uz where Job of the Old Testament lived. The Uz, as Ausonianites, sailed to Italy and Sweden. >>>Guti settled above Assyria in the Caucasus. They subjugated the Akkadian empire of Sargon for 150 years and became Assyrians. The rest of the Guti migrated to Sweden and we know them as Goths, whose history is well known. >>>Getea the Aramaic Getea became Scythians in Persia and Dacia in Romania, known as the Massagetae. Under pressure from Rome, they fled to Sweden, as evidenced by DNA evidence. >>>Lud, these were the Aramaic Luddbu in the Caucasus. They came around 1500BC. as Lydians to Asia Minor and built their state of Luwiya. From there they became the greatest sea power of the early days and settled in Italy together with the Etruscans. This is really good thanks I've always hard that ancient Arabs used Aramaic because it's more formal, some went even as far as saying Aramaic is the original Arabic and thought that was nonsense since Arabs were proud of their language more than anything else but this shows the truth. They used it for communication with others, that's why reliefs exist, just like Egyptians used akkadian for communication while considering it a barbarian tongue

Is there any mention of Arameans prior to the 'fall' of the Minoan culture? The more I learn, the more evidence points to the possibility that the proto-Hebrews and Phonecians are actually the remnants of the refugees who'd managed to survive the initial eruption and then the tidal wave which we know engulfed a huge swathe of the eastern Mediterranean coastline, coastal communities etc. The aristocracy would undoubtedly have found limited haven within coastal city-states through previous accords and intermarriages, and the peasantry would have been forced to go wherever they could find refuge around the whole area. I don't believe they 'borrowed' the alphabet, I believe their culture had a system not unlike Imperial Japan, whereby the aristocracy and peasantry had related but distinct languages which only the aristocracy of priest-kings could converse in both.

In Deuteronomy in the OT it says the patriarchs were "Wandering Arameans", so if that's true then they were originally refugees from Syria during a major famine and went to Egypt like so many other Semitic speaking people and at that time Egypt included parts of Canaan under Egyptian dominion.

Yeah, most of what we know about them comes from the texts of others, mainly Babylonian and Assyrian. They did leave behind several monuments and a few religious texts, but overall most of whatever archives they had were probably destroyed by all the invasions that burned their cities...they were all fiercely independent! Greetings Cy; There is a glaring paradox in your narrative. There were two written Aramaic alphabets, Siniatic Aramaic and Syriatic Aramean. Siniatic Aramaic evolved into Hebrew, and was first known in Egypt from the 17th Century BC. Syriatic Aramaic evolved into Phoenician; its date of origin is unclear. Could you please investigate?

The region where Jesus grew up was multicultural and multilingual, beside Aramaic, it is very likely Jesus was well versed in Hebrew for religious purposes and ceremonies, and could speak or communicate in Koine Greek with the locals and foreigners because it was widespread back in the day due to Hellenization. Fun fact, The New Testament was first written in Koine Greek.

It's most likely true. It just started a few centuries before. Like Latin was used for many centuries as lingua franca in Europe. And there are still some villages in Syria and Northern Iraq where they speak Aramaic. So they are the same thing, the same language as in this video. This told the story how the language became so widespread and important. See the timeline: a few centuries before Jesus. Like many mentioned here, Hebrew was a lot like Latin is for many Christians - a liturgical or religious language: the Israelites often quoted the Bible - don't know if they used any other language than Hebrew then. With my couple of Hebrew courses, I can read bits of the old testament here and there - and Esra & Nehemia are written in Aramaic, well the other is partly Hebrew too. I can understand surprisingly much of them in the Hebrew Bible, because Aramaic and Hebrew are somewhat related. Plus Hebrew took many words from Aramaic that are still in use (like bar in Barabbas - Son (of) Abbas: Hebrew would say Benabbas, just written more like Ben-Abbas). And Latin is important also for scholars, no matter their religion.

Hi! Actually there are several distinctions, but also several overlaps. Neo-Hittite states were generally Luwian-speaking and, at least outwardly, claimed descent from the old Hittite Empire. Arameans on the other hand were a different ethnic group and spoke Aramaic. However, there were a few Neo-Hittite states that had large Aramean populations and some at times rulers as well. SHLOMO everybody, I´am ARAMEAN (Syriac) and speak ARAMAIC. The Arameans trace their genealogical lines back to the eponymous ancestor Aram, the son of Shem, the son of Noah (Genesis 10:1, 22). We have a rich history for more than 4000 years and are proud of our culture and identity. The Aramean culture and identity are the Cradle of Civilization. Aramaic was the mother tongue of Abraham, Joseph, Jacob, Jesus Christ and also of Muhammed (Islamic prophet). The Arameans were the first people who accepted Christianity. Did you know that Jesus has healed the Aramean king Abgar the Black from his sickness? Did you know that the Arameans has established in 37AD the Syrian-Orthodox Church of Antioch and St. Peter became the first Patriarch of our Church. That´s why the Syrian-Orthodox Church also is called “Mother of all Churches”. Did you know that the famous queen Zenobia of Palmyra was from Aramean origin? Did you know that one of the richest man of the world CARLOS SLIM (from Mexico, originally from Lebanon) is from Aramean-Maronite origin? Did you know that currently the State of Israel is the only country in the Middle East that officially has recognized the Aramean identity and culture (since 2014). I want to recommend everybody to watch the documentary “THE HIDDEN PEARL: Syriac-Orthodox Church and Aramaic Heritage”. You can watch this docu for free on KZbin. Today 15 June we remember the Aramean victims during the Aramean genocide of 1915!

The name ARAM is also famous and loved by the Armenians. The Armenians, an ancient civilisation whose history is long, complex, and in many ways epic and heroic. The descendants of Aram the Brave and Haik the forefather and establisher of the first Armenian kingdom. A nation who had Kings, Royal dynasties and a widespread Armenian empire in the first century BC. under King Tigran II the Great.
