What’s the advantages and disadvantages of sail mounted and bow mounted planes

Sail: Less turbulence around bow array. Can rotate vertical for punching through ice. Always extended. Creating hydrodynamic turbulence. Bow: Can retract to reduce turbulence and prevent damage from ice. (I think)

Pump Jet propulsors are less noisy as the shround deflects sound. The con is that they aren't used by diesels (except the Russian) because they have poor low speed performance
@riskinhos

they don't have poor low speed performance they just require a lot more energy to run. which is no issue with new modern lithium battery AIP subs. it's certain that all subs will be pump jet in the next decades. technology needs to mature a bit more

For a moment i was tempted to start a discussion on why 'Hunt for Red October' only got the 2nd place. But when You named Your favorite i figured that it's a bit dependent on the context. For me, 'Hunt for Red October' is generally my no. 1, but in part because i love the power plays and humor in there. I fully agree on your assessment of 'Das Boot' and the better TV mini-series. (I even have a VHS recording of that. ;) The way how they made it together with the movie is pretty interesting btw.) Other than that: Great video. I love those longer Q&As and your artwork.

Funny you mention Das Boot. My house was pretty much a non cartoon/kid movie zone when I was growing up. So, I got a front row seat to a lot of more grown up content as a young kid. Das Boot and Stalingrad, Great Escape, yadda yadda. I probably wore those tapes out. Both the German films were very emotionally compelling in their own ways-even to a kidlet like me. Great Escape was just fun to watch.

What are all the advantages and disadvantages of pumpjets? I've seen some sources say they're especially useful at low speeds, while others have said they're best at high speeds. Which is it, and why? And is it better across the speed spectrum, or can they be worse than screws? Is there a larger danger of debris getting caught in a pumpjet than in a screw? (I'd wager a fishing net would be LESS dangerous, though?)

As I understand it, pumpjets are superior in terms of noise, but there's a trade off in terms of reduced outright top speed.

@H I Sutton - Covert Shores Question for the next video/Q&A: As an Aussie I'd be remiss not to ask what do you think AUUKUS will bring? Both in terms of what sort of SSN do you think the RAN will end up with , Astute, Virginia, other (if other what?) and why? And what do you think the strategic and operational implications are for AUUKUS? E.g. basing, logistics, servicing/refits (Since there'll be another yard in the pacific/infian ocean reagion, presumably capable orf refitting SSNs) , force generation for the AUUKUS nations and the US in particular will the RAN SSNs effiectively just be the Indian Ocean.East Pacific USN flotilla freeing up SSNs for the US to deploy else where or redeploy SSNs worth of funding to other programs?? Totally unrelated to AUUKUS question: Can active sonar be spoofed e.g. you send an out of phase ping back, or a weaker or stronger ping back of the corect frequency to make it harder to calculate the range?

general answer, Australia is part of Asia and as such already "gifted" to China to buy some "equality points" for West (USA, Europe) so China doesnt take us over in next 50 years, Australia is like a nice gift for them, so no, all your "investments" are only a way of West to pick every last penny of your taxpayers money before you are "lost to China" :D in general terms, cheerio

Hi again! Love the video, thank you once again. in socialism there is no "second class" and whilst in capitalism, a captain will get all the benefits but the enlisted man is treated as animal, in socialism everyone has "equal rights" so if there is way to automate, it is done as it is one of basics of socialism, the human is the constructive element of the system and every human should be cherished and its ideological "difference" the West will never understand. In CCCP a cleaning lady in factory had "same rights" as the factory director - in principle, practice was somewhat lagging but the idea was there and general approach to things - wherever you can automate, you automate because worker is the basis of that system and there is no purpose of capitalist "abuse" of workers. If automation costs million, and you can pay enlisted man to do it, in America and West, its generally done that way as humans are "expendable" and "changeable" in West.

Another factor that I don't think was mentioned for the "cold war factor" is listening networks like "sosus". The huge topic in ASW is active sonar using multiple synchronized distributed transmitters, multistatic sonar systems. That's what the new "stealth" 212CD and the new british boomer are countering. These MAS use lower frequencies than more traditional sonar, which makes absorber tiles less effective, so a better solution was required.

I do not understand the physics of your saying there will be a minor rise of height of water over undersea mountains not just for the water spreads factor and tidal currents, but when ships are close to the seabed, there is danger of a downsuction effect which works in opposite direction so just sounds weird to me. // Do you know much about Holy Loch-if you do, can you say please-if it's not a now about then what you know about what it was, how it fitted in alongside us? // You mention nuclear reactors, I thought we were batteries. Others are reactors. Or is that just SSNs // What's your opinion on BAE and its coming in to proliference, with exhaustion and disappearing elsewhere and fact there's a BAE Inc and a BAE plc, one needed for American deals and seems based in USA but us having 2 different offices in Britain for the two? (oh this bracketted is more just a speak out as time moves on, I find it disappointing a company I remember in its early stages being involved in a cash bribery thing with Saudis and was known for just producing Hawk jet trainer aircraft (and that's what was involved) and should have been well behind other British military producers has surged through..it shows an extreme and serious British Government neglect (to Tom Clancy it) in my honest opinion and fact USN is using Rolls Royce nowadays(when wasn't as far as I can tell pre2005, it saddens me as to just what is happening in this world NOW and is not being revealed), just who has the reins here in Britain; that Saudi thing mentioned being extremely relevant in mentioning as we actually have closer history to Iran than Saudi Arabia, Saudi Arabia is more associated with another Western Country wrt this modern era than Britain..[its not actually a call-out, but I would like to group with mentions here, BAE were(/likely moved to bigger hqs elsewhere now but I don't know) based near afai would like to say near the under dark cloud (remote, off footfall with its own telephone system) city of Hull at a location called Brough. And for other readers not the main post creator (who has wrote and narrated or rather unscripted some really good stuff) wondering what BAE have to do with all this, they appear to be the main military producer in Britain now and also appear to own one if not some of our shipyards and includes in the now present building (and design) of vessels in their portfolio, (British) submarines..])

Also can any submarines detach (and then retrieve) a periscope to the surface on a cable while remaining at depth? Can submarines launch anti aircraft missiles while submerged? Can mines be deployed by torpedo tubes? Can a torpedo be used as a mine? (ie fired, travel to a location, rest on the seabed and thereafter act like a homing mine) Thanks. All the best everyone.

Totally agree, it's not just the amount of data collected by everyone it's the ability to produce actionable results. If I'm going to arm chair quarter back here. The average Chinese and Russian citizen have more abilities with tech as they are all playing cat and mouse with their governments and in some cases, other governments. But, the OSINT ability might be a bit stronger for the west as the those counties can handle the good and bad side of intelligence leaks. Where I think China and Russia would tolerate you getting around a firewall and serving pirated DVD's..., but, the moment you release state secrets. (Even if by accident). It's game over.

I totally agree with you that Das Boot is the best sub movie. I can only watch it in original German with subtitles. The English dub is unbearable.

Worth noting is the fact that the vast majority of modern US technology is based on the techtransfer from the UK in WWII, the Tizard mission. Before that, USA was technologically primitive in almost everything except massproduction.
