i feel like i could sit in that field and just watch that thing go around for hours. that looks like a lovely day.

My grand dad worked for the Waggoner Brothers Ranch in the 50’s & 60’s. The Triple D. Grand dad lived in a small 'company house' 3 or 4 miles from what was then, a hamlet called Grayback, in Wilbarger County, TX. I remember going out there up until I was maybe 6yrs old before he retired. Grampa was a 'gager' for the DDD and he'd drive me, my little brother & my dad on his route when we visited. He'd stop at all these wells, checking the pumps, the levels in the storage tanks, and the huge band-wheel house machinery. That thing ( the band-wheel) was fascinating! And we'd often have to drive over the low lying rod lines going on the route. But the best memory from those visits was at night. The windows in the house and the doors were most always open. There was a pump engine like the one you posted here, that lulled (at least me) to sleep nights. That was a sound I have not heard in close to 60 years, and I never thought I'd hear it again! It was, and still is a comforting sound that I've reminisced about throughout my life from time to time. Thank you so much for posting this!

Ajax 8 1/2 X 10 engine. No valves as they used ports for intake and exhaust. Had a lubricator that used 30w oil to oil single piston. A good reliable engine but magneto was their weak link. Just changed them out every @6 mos. or so. No water pump. They used what they called a Thermo- siphon condenser. Never overheated. Crankcase used the splash system for the rod and crank. Thanks for posting! 👍👍👍

Awesome... Ive always wanted to put a engine like that on a old or homemade prairie tractor on steel.

My grandfather used to let me start these things with that big damn hand crank handle when I was like 10. Wild shit when your a little kid. This was back in the early 80's.
@lonnybruce94073 жыл бұрын
Ajax engines do not have a hand crank. Maybe you cranked an Arrow or Continental engine.

I have a couple Ajax E42 engines on my oilfield route… cool engines but hard to fix leaks and flywheel ring gear is hard to fix..

Cool 😎 like the sound of the hit and miss engine 😃

Nothing sounds as good as an Ajax engine!!

The engine changes its tempo based on position of thr counterweights.

Does it run off the gas vapors of the well itself?

Ones we worked on was propane cause it wasnt no power out middle of no where

Hit and Miss - Controls the engines speed by cutting off the engines ignition system when it runs too fast. This is the "miss" part. When the engine slows

A "Right" Ajax can be best engine you have but one that has had gremlins in it can cause you gray hair and baldness! I ran one for years maybe 3 ring jobs in 8+ years, could kick-start quicker than grabbing starting motor then have had some that were redone by 3 different mechanics starts great but liable to run away with itself and walk a 160/228 pumpjack clear off location and nobody could figure out why.

how do you find a pumpjack?

how do you know where to locate a pump jack?
@artmario54292 жыл бұрын
It's science, art and luck! Geologists go to school for years, learn by experience, look at seismic waves to find underground salt domes etc. Then they drill a hole and look at the rock dust that comes up andtells them what kind of rock is down there, they lower electronic sensors etc etc. And it's still a gamble!

Just a few years ago in Illinois basin gods honest truth they used dowsing rods along with the geologists 2012

No such thing as a hit and miss pumping unit. This pumping unit is a Lufkin and the engine is an Ajax 2 cycle.
@michealdumasii54323 жыл бұрын
By any chance you know what motor or engine most oil pump jacks use currently? Or what's popular on the market or efficient?
@lonnybruce94073 жыл бұрын
@@michealdumasii5432 We have Lufkin, Bethlehem, Parkersburg, Sentry, and American pumping units with Arrow C-66, C-96, and C-106 engines, or electric motors where our wells do not produce natural gas.

This is a hit and miss 4 stroke engine also know as an oil pull engine. When a specific rpm is exceeded a lockout mechanism holds the exhaust valve open so it can't fire so it misses until the rpm slows and the exhaust valve closes.
@georgieippolito99243 жыл бұрын
the engine does hit and miss. that name got popular so it does exist.
@lonnybruce94073 жыл бұрын
@@foamyflyer Sorry you are not correct. Hit and miss engines have an external exhaust valve rod that is mechanically actuated by a governor that holds it open at a selected rpm. This engine has exhaust ports and reed intake valves that are not mechanical.
