Hitherto is a formal adverb that you can use in writing compositions for the B2 First (FCE), C1 Advanced (CAE) and C2 Proficiency (CPE) Cambridge English exams such as the essay, report, proposal, formal letter and possibly the article and review, depending on the register used (not to be used in informal contexts).

Great, Sabine. It's more common to put "hitherto" between the auxiliary and main verb. "...none have hitherto been found."

Hey Ben. You may as well make a video about the "lest" conjunction. Personally have never seen it explained in any of the official Cambridge textbooks, albeit it is an advanced enough vocabulary. Would be tremendously grateful if you provided some explanations. Would be particularly helpful for C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency students.

I had just found this word today and I wasn't totally sure of the meaning. Here is the sentence where I found it: "The third stage, labeled by Mandel (1975) and Jameson as "late capitalism," involves a "prodigious expansion of capital into hitherto uncommodified areas" (Jameson, 1984: 78).". Yes, in general. But, apart from being more informal, "so far" suggests that the situation may change later.

Yes. When used as a noun "use" can have the same meaning as "usage", the latter being more formal.
