How to learn phrasal verbs? Every student (and teacher) is looking for an easy answer to that question but, in my opinion, there is no one magic method. It's important to realise that phrasal verbs are not completely illogical, although the may appear to be. Like all English vocabulary, knowing the etymology can help.
In this video, I explain how to learn phrasal verbs through time travel!
I hope you find the video useful!

I learn idioms learning about their origins. Nobody told me that I just one time read an origin of one idiom. "American Heritage Dictionary of Idioms" by Christine Ammer and "The Facts on File Dictionary of Clichés" by Christine Ammer are the best dictionaries for this. One time is enough to read about an origin and you remmeber an idiom for ever. So that's a great advice from the teacher, use it all!

Hello Ben. Thank you very much for your videos. They're priceless to me, as they're extremely useful to enrich my English vocabulary and grammar. And let me tell you, I'm old enough to know the origin of the phrasal verb "knuckle down" as I used to play marbles in my childhood 😀

Hello teacher Ben.... Phrasal verbs are such a nightmare for most of English learners. In my POV, to understand the phrasal verbs we need to connect the literally meaning and the figuratively one, there's a "soul" in it, and it's pretty hard to expound, it's just my weird way.. I do understand that everyone has their own ways, btw thanks for your great video.... Do have a beautiful day...
@tothepointenglishwithben.
@tothepointenglishwithben. 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, Anney. I think context is the way to find the "soul" of a phrasal verb. Nice to hear from you! 🙂

Too many people these days are cut of deep meaning. The deeper you anchor your understanding the more likely you will become able to use it creatively as well as remembering better and create connections with other domains and other languages. Dig deep.

In Spanish we say: cuelga el teléfono. But, thinking about it we don't "colgamos" when we hang up the phone. Nevertheless, the verb "hang" in Spanish means "colgar".

Nothing makes sense in this world anyway. The more u use the language u can assimilate it and being to understand the ins and outs of English or Spanish. Knuckle down makes more sense to me, its relatively similar to the one in Spanish lol

@tothepointenglishwithben. Ben, do you think that " to knucke down" could be similar to "hincar los codos" in Spanish?
