Good video - explained very well. My observation was when Isolating the mains power to fit the controller (by switching off fused spur )- I would suggest, not only switching off the Switched Fused Spur but also remove the actual Fuse from the Switched Fused Spur unit. Or if isolating at Consumer Unit - locking out the RCD / MCB/ RCBO to avoid it being switched on whilst you are wiring the controller. Also don't you need to alter the wiring in the wiring centre box where the hardwired roomstat has been removed. I may have missed this in the video, but if you don't do this the heating will not work.

Very useful and informative . Nice to see the full installation as others were just giving the impression that all one needed to do was install a thermostat. I would have liked to have seen better detail on the thermostat controls in particular manual "Heating ON" as I'm thinking of installing one for my father who is severely technically challenged.
@junkendriven
@junkendriven 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching! On the heating controls, there is a little more info on my follow up video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmHLkJKan7CaabM But to answer your question, a quick "HEAT ON" boost would be to press one of the two top recessed boost buttons which would turn the heating on for an hour at your triggered boost temperature, that may do what you want. Depending on your fathers mobility though the top button may not be ideal.

Compliments on an informative video. I bought a Hive last night in a Black Friday sale event, including free Amazon Echo (got two already but more won't hurt) and including installation for £148. The install is £40 of that price but looking at this, I fitted our existing Danfoss, the same as yours so could have gone for the self fit. Regardless, price was good so no issue. Just one comment, when showing the wiring or diagrams, please consider using a tripod or just a still picture of them and voice over afterwards. I paused the video to keep a still frame to look at as you were wobbling around a bit :)

Great instructions superb. A thing to note with the Hive on Amazon is they offer installation through British Gas quite cheaply at the moment (£30 ish) unfortunately they won't touch an oil boiler. So if you order installation they only send thermostat no hub or receiver the engineer brings those. Odd really because the engineer doesn't even need to touch boiler. I had to send mine back and order a none installation one.

Hi there. So you only need the hub if you want to control it online. The hub joins the home equipment to the internet via a network cable into your broadband router. If you don't want to use the app on the phone or their website to configure and control then you do NOT need the hub. The thermostat and boiler control unit do NOT need the hub. Hope that clears it up :-) Please remember to subscribe to help the channel out.

Hi, it depends on how your old room thermostat is connected. In the video mine is connected to the plate so by replacing it my thermostat is disconnected, you can then just remove it from the wall and use tape to protect the wires in the wall. The room thermostat doesn't affect the tank for hot water

Can I ask a question Andy, if you know or maybe someone else might. I had a Hive in my old house, when I moved to my new house, I took the hub, as I was told it was linked to my account. I’d like to have a hive in the new house. It has the boiler room on the 3rd floor, with a control panel for the hot water. The ground floor and second floor have their own thermostats. What I’d like to know if you can answer, if I buy the Hive with a receiver and two thermostats, will my current Hub connect to the new receiver and thermostats, or will I have to buy the whole lot with a new hub? Cheers
@junkendriven
@junkendriven 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, on the first point about taking the hub, absolutely. I know the hub ID is linked to your account (which is why pairing is done by calling/speaking to them) so taking that with you makes sense. So you then just re-pair the thermostats and receiver to your hub. I've not seen personally the two thermostat solution, I believe you may need two receivers, one for ground floor and one for 1st floor to 'switch' the right contacts in the boiler, but I'm not 100% sure on that. Sorry can't give a more concise answer on that one. Please do post back on your results

Why are the hot water off & heating off terminals not connected on the Hive system, surely you need these to control the motorised valves, unless they are spring return but as the old programmer had these connections used I would have thought it necessary to use with the Hive.
@junkendriven
@junkendriven 6 жыл бұрын
In a lot of systems as you rightly say the motorised vales are spring return/idle return. So in my case the terminals are there just unused so my two OFF connections dont have any wires attached. (So although the old programmer had the connections, there were no wires into them in the backplate)

@junkendriven

Hi, combi with built-in timer can take hive, the built-in timer is just set to continuous and there is a feed for the thermostat which is what hive will control. You may need to consult documentation on your boiler for specific information but it should be possible.

This is a really helpful video. I'm looking at doing a similar replacement myself, but my existing wiring doesn't seem to have a wire to the Central Heating off connection. Can that one be ignored? My system has a separate controller and receiver, though I am thinking the receiver is what you refer to as the remote control part, which you ignore, as I think the hive thermostat communicates directly with the dual receiver?

@junkendriven

Normally (have to check manuals, etc) you can set that to bypass and use an external timer and programmer. Normally wiring is there to do it and you just set a jumper or wire to use external timer. Remember, wiring in boilers is at mains voltage, don't mess with the power on or if unsure get assistance

I've got only 2 wires for HW ON and CH ON in my existing programmer like some of the other viewers. What you say seems straightforward but in my case, I also have an existing wireless thermostat and the wires going into the 'base' part of that (which is right next to the programmer) are the same colour as the HW ON and CH ON wires in the programmer. Do I need to do any thing different? The wireless thermostat will obviously be redundant when Hive takes over.

How far apart can the receiver and hub be placed, before they run into problems? same for the thermostat. have you tried it?
@nalem7

Leslie Thomas we’ve been using “hive 1” for two years. Receiver and boiler is at the back of the loft, about 12m from hub and roomstat. Works perfectly. Just upgrading to “hive 2”. Shoul be even better 🤔

Hi.I was under the impression the law changed a few years ago and we are not allowed to install electrical items ourselves now, such as sockets, spurs and especially anything to do with boilers in case anything goes wrong as we end up causing a fire.You then run the serious possibility of your insurance not paying out because it was not installed by a qualified professional?Your insurance will want to go after their insurance if something goes wrong, but, if you have done it yourself then?

You raise an interesting point, this relates to part P electrical safety in dwellings Government legislation. There are many interpretations of it, but generally (And this is my understanding backed up by a registered electrician I've discussed it with) it is related to if the work is notifiable to building control for inspection. Notification is needed for new rings/circuits, Replacement of consumer dist units or alterations to units in "special" locations (Bath or Shower room). So for example adding a socket/spur to an existing ring is non-notifiable work and not subject to certification. In this instance you are replacing a socket (effectively) and therefore not required to have it certified. The document from GOV UK is at: assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/441872/BR_PDF_AD_P_2013.pdf and if you look up section 2.5 12(6a) this confirms what is notifiable. Hope that helps, obviously I'm not a certified part P electrician, so the above is my understanding of the UK law. If you are in any way unsure you should call a certified electrician.

I need a system for setting shift patterns one week early one week late shift will this do that does my head in changing it every week
@LewisBrain
@LewisBrain 6 жыл бұрын
I no I'm the same with my hive lights. The hive timer works like the alarm clock on your phone. You can set it up for the week. But would then have to set it for the following weeks schedual. update I have just got one in my Black Friday deal. I shall still be working all different shifts. So am going to use it manually from my phone.

Thanks for watching, I'm doing a follow up video very shortly on the Hive, 1 year on with ups and downs. Good suggestion on the "Ready By" function, I've not fully tested but will do this and add to the next video

Was it not a universal back plate? Could you not have just swapped the wires to the correct terminals?
@junkendriven
@junkendriven 6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately not, I'd expected it to be a standard/universal plate, I'm not sure if this was the hive or my old plate. Considering the original programmer/boiler in this house was built in 2014 I'd expect it to be pretty new spec-wise so perhaps this is the hive plate that differs.

So what happens to the HW off and Heating off wires? They were fitted to the old controller but not the hive. Are they taped up and not used? Thanks
