During multi national at-sea demonstration #FormidableShield2021 HMS Dragon fired her Sea Viper (Aster 30) missile destroying a 400mph+ Firejet drone.
Dragon also tracked long-range Mach 8+ ballistic missiles and provided tracking data for other warships to intercept supersonic sea-skimming missiles.

Absolutely stunning, HMS Dragon D35 is by far my favourite ship currently serving in the Royal Navy. The 4th Daring Class Air Defence Type 45 Destroyers is absolutely brilliant. The Sea Viper Missile System is by far one of the greatest weapons systems in the world. Each missile can travel and execute a target travelling up to speeds of mach 2. She has the Phalanx CIWS (Close In Weapons System) which can fire around 4,000 rounds per minute. The Phalanx CIWS are used for air defence and for enemy executing targets that are travelling on the ocean. She also has the 33 inch Anti-Aircraft Guns which can be used for Air Defence and of course to execute targets travelling on the ocean. She and her sisters weigh 8,500 tonnes and they are the reason why HM Royal Navy are brilliant because the Daring Class Air Defence Type 45 Destroyers are the heart of the Royal Navy, without them the Royal Navy can't effectively operate. God Save Her Majesty's Royal Navy an absolute masterpiece of British engineering at its finest. 💪👍🇬🇧

They will need laser defence capable of stopping sea skimming hypersonic missiles though, unless the ciws can do that with enough metal in between the boat and the projectile

And the Russians and Chinese would be able to sink it swiftly with their now superior weapons. But as long as it looks good before it goes down. With all the snowflakes pushing past eachother to get in the life boat.

One of the predecessor missile systems for the RN was Sea Wolf, which was capable of intercepting incoming artillery shells. Assuming the new generation Aster is more advanced (?) these ships must be very well protected, not least the brave servicemen and women on board.
@craigsimons817
@craigsimons817 2 жыл бұрын
@Phil Collins Surely they are the first line of defence against a missile attack? CIWS like Phalanx and Goalkeeper and manually operated small calibration weapons on board would not engage an incoming threat ahead of an anti-missile capable Aster system? If they are, then these vessels are extremely vulnerable.

Could a Sea Viper theoretically shoot down a ballistic missile if it had to? I know it's not rated to, but if an ICBM or similar is approaching the ship I'm presuming a Sea Viper (maybe multiple in the case of an ICBM) would be launched in an attempt to get a hit on it? Just wondering as surely the speed difference wouldn't make such a massive difference if the Ballistic missile was travelling straight for the defending ship, meaning the interceptor missile would meet it part way rather than trying to keep up with it. Also, since last I heard the Government scrapped the review to add anti-ballistic missile capability to T45s, is there any plans for us to develop that capability for any of our ships or are we just going to have to sail with US Arleigh Burkes so T45s provide regular air defence and Arleigh Burkes provide anti-Ballistic missile capability?

ICBM travel at hypersonic speeds, they're essentially short lived satellites. Nothing is hitting them.

The Sea Viper uses the Aster series missile. They are still working on anti-ballistic missile capability for the Aster missiles. The current missile lacks the destructive power to stop an ICBM The US uses the SM-6 in anti-ballistic missile capability. The Aster warhead is 33lbs while the SM-6 is 140lbs Second the SM-series has vastly superior range to the Uk Aster The Type-45 has excellent sensors but half assed missiles

The Sampson Radar system is capable of detecting and targeting incoming ballistic missiles. The Aster missile is currently incapable. I believe its a combination of necessary missile range combined with the capability of the missile's targeting systems.
