I truly loved this video. HMS Unicorn was my late grandfather's ship, he served on her from 1947 to 1953 and watching this reminds me of all the stories and looking through album after album of photographs he told and showd me and his life on her

She was also my Great-Grandfathers ship. I have some photos taken by him aboard the ship, with ongoing battles and Spitfires hanging off the deck!

Hi. I have just watched on KZbin your video about HMS Unicorn. My father served on this ship 1949-51. I have an original account from that tour. On 16th September 1951 the Unicorn did indeed carry out a bombardment at Coppeki Point, ‘firing 16 salvos at a watchers hut’. Three of these were known to have hit the target

Interesting note The Name Unicorn was taken from HMS Unicorn the oldest frigate afloat and Based in Dundee Scotland (The Frigate being named HMS Cressy) until the carriers decommision when the Frigate had her Name returned The frigate is still in Dundee and normally has tours available.

Great to see this video as my uncle John Dowle served on Unicorn in WW2 (was serving in 1943). He was a killick (aircraft electrician) and from Leicester. During his service he married Winifred Jackson and they had two children Martin and Tina. After the war he was a butcher and had his own shop on Cavendish Road, Aylestone, Leicester. He passed away in 1995 from emphysema.

Right. When I finally build my time machine, I'll manifest on HMS Unicorn 1940s. Until now, my ship was going to be an Arathusa light cruiser.

Btw, the story about her bombarding the coast I heard corroborated from another naval historian ;), who went on to mention that HMS Formidable is the only carrier to sail in a battle line and fire on the enemy with her little guns lol.

Maintenance ships were meant to be spanners in the Axis machine, bolts from out of the blue that often involved lament for the loss of the Philips head, the motto of Unicorn was Turning the Screw

Anyone remember the 'Jap scap repair ship' from the ancient Popeye cartoons that were screened on tv in the 1950s?
@jamesbugbee9026 Жыл бұрын
I've kept a great interest in this ship (tinged w/ a touch of horror) due 2 her dwarf nature, wierd function, & rather odd timing. Having heard the shore-bombardment story, i thot that such might have been one of her greatest points of utility (especially as an AA platform), & now i'm seeing her as a sort of ancester 2 the wave of tall yet short utility jumpjet ships recently emerging, equally homely (& of questionable use in real warfighting terms. Sigh)

She was built with a hydraulic catapult, not a steam catapult. Steam catapults weren't invented until the early 50s, Unicorn was never retrofitted.
@TheShipYard24 жыл бұрын
I think we can gloss over the steam catapult thing. but, unicorn wasnt retrofitted, and i did say that. they looked at it, but never did
