this is a superb review on the racking. thanks a lot mate. how does it do on tiny pieces say 2 inches and you can only clamp a tiny bit of it nearer the corner?
@kuffyswoodwork2 жыл бұрын
Depending on what you wanted to do with the tiny pieces, it may or may not hold. I just gave my vice a quick test, and I could plane the end grain of a piece which was 2" x 1" x 3/4" being held upright in the vice by the lower 3/8". I could have also increased the vice pressure and crushed the timber fibers too. Hopefully this helps, cheers mate.

I'm planning on making another bench suited more towards storage of odds and ends while also being a rock solid ten tonne tank. That build will be taking place over the coming Xmas period, sooner if the government locks me down. I will probably install another of these front vises on the new bench. I can't really see myself being happy with anything else on the market now, and obviously, if it isn't as good, it will just collect dust and rust and never get used.

Looks cool, but it relies upon plastic bushings to function properly. How fast will they wear under use? My 1940s Record vise that bears the scars of heavy use works perfectly and will continue to do so for the next 80 years. It doesn’t appear that this one will last 10 years, let alone a century.

@kuffyswoodwork4 жыл бұрын
The whatchamacallits are called hold downs? That doesn't seem right :D If I didn't get the HNT, I would have gotten a 10" Dawn. They are about half the price. Not quite as good as the HNT, but still very usable and in some cases better suited to the task given the wider opening capacity.

It's a bloody ripper alright. Would love to see how the screw moves that piston but I guess it's just a normal thread in there. I rage ripped my vice off the other night as it was always drooping at the front but I discovered a very easy to fix install cocktail up so that was good. Want some dog holes next. Thanks mate, entertaining vid for a Saturday night. 👍

Rob, if you want to drill your dog holes without a guide, don't try using a forstner bit. (Ask me how I know.) I finally got a straight dog hole using one of those boring bits that look like an auger bit. This is just one reason why I'm considering another bench - about 8 unusable dog holes.

@ΓιώργοςΧριστ-γ7τ9 ай бұрын
Its not fair comparing these two vices when comes to rigidity of clamping when the fancy one has so much more friction in the clamped object cause of the cork/leather thing that is glued on the inside. There is also a huge price difference. You can get a cheap but decent vise that will serve you well for many many years without having to spend 500-600$
@kuffyswoodwork9 ай бұрын
I have a new workbench build video coming soon. This time I used a cheaper generic 9" vice. It works very well, but not as well as the HNT Gordon.
@julietphillips19914 жыл бұрын
That is a nice, strong vise. In defense of your other "piece of crap" vise, the face of it is wood, not so? Maybe if you attached a metal face to it, you would not have that gap when you tighten the work-piece, or maybe even a bit of coarse sandpaper. The new one is aluminum. It does look good and performs well.
@kuffyswoodwork4 жыл бұрын
The gap opens up on the bad vice because of the connection between the vice and front jaw can flex easily because it's just a few screws. This would be the same if it was steel. Whereas the connection of the front jaw to the cylinder on the HNT Gordon is a precision machined mortise and tenon. The jaw can't flex backwards without literally crushing that connection.
