I've never used one and am here to learn before buying my own pipe clamps, but I'm wondering if you're perhaps using it upside down? If you can use it the other way around the handle won't fall off the threading cylinder.

I'm not sure if it was upside down or not. It worked, so I was happy with that.

My concern is that square cut made to create the wheel attachment points. There will be a lot of weight/leverage on that square corner which increases the likely hood that the lumber will split along the grain. Generally you'd make that cut a smooth curve from the bottom of the lumber to the wheel attachment point.

I had the same concern, but I figured it would probably be OK. Hasn't split yet.

Its not fair comparing these two vices when comes to rigidity of clamping when the fancy one has so much more friction in the clamped object cause of the cork/leather thing that is glued on the inside. There is also a huge price difference. You can get a cheap but decent vise that will serve you well for many many years without having to spend 500-600$

My woodwork club has a Sawstop and Felder panel saw and I take the Felder every time I can. I actually feel safer using the Felder than the Sawstop and I would take one of these over Sawstop too. Panel saws are just inherently safer. But the truth is I don’t actually like any table saws very much and I will probably stick with a track saw. And I totally agree about using whole body movements with this kind of saw. That’s the beauty of it. And IMHO, it’s those whole body movements that limit the likelihood of an accident. When I see idiots on KZbin using table saws with no blade guard - or worse, no riving knife - I just shudder. If you comment on it they just say, ‘You do it your way’. But it’s the example they’re setting for new woodworkers that worries me. The only disadvantage, aside from the space it takes up, is the price. This one is reasonable at $9,500 (March 2024). A Felder costs three or four times that much. But a top of the line Sawstop is over $9,000.
@kuffyswoodwork
@kuffyswoodwork 6 ай бұрын
You nailed it perfectly. One of the big reasons why sliders are much safer than table saws is because your hands aren't moving to or away from your body to make the cut. They are locked in one position and your entire moves to make the cut.

Why bend the wood for the planer?
@kuffyswoodwork
@kuffyswoodwork 7 ай бұрын
The thin timber is very flexible, and tends to flex upwards into the planar head before it has made its way to the outfeed roller. By bending the timber, it puts greater downward force on the leading end somewhat compensating for the flexibility of the thin timber.

WOW PERFECT!!! I have been trying to figure out how to make a couple of my rolling bases more stable and all I could think of (limited brain matter apparently) was to expand the width of the base extending the wheels further out. Does anyone know, if its possible to dissassemble the knob on the rear? The video shows at one point a tiny hole at the end of the the vise´s body. Is it to reach some kind of screw that locks the knob to the shaft? The reason is, I would need to make the the knob detachable, otherwise it would obstruct clamping workpieces on the right side of my (mft-)bench. Thx

I think for the most part this is a nice build. The only thing I would change based on my personal experience is that I would not use fixed casters at the end. Rather, I'd put swivels all the way around. Using what you have on hand is great, but you can already see that only pivoting from one end is leading to positioning issues. Save the time and aggravation, spend a few dollars and get swivels for all 4 corners.
@kuffyswoodwork
@kuffyswoodwork 8 ай бұрын
A lot of people have suggested this. I specifically did it with one pair of swivels and one pair of fixed because I have the room in my shop to maneuver it. It also means that I can essentially lock it place using one stop on one of the swivel wheel, given that the pressure is being applied sideways. It works for me.
