I’m so excited to say how I only spent under $10 on Back To School Supplies this year!! This felt so good reusing what we already had!! Between using backpacks & supplies from last year and my hoarded supply stash in the basement...I only had to buy 3 things for school year coming out to $6.16!! Wow exciting is that?!!!

Wow, your district is going partially in person right away. Wonder if that’s a north/central/south difference. I’m in central NJ and we were originally being offered an option. But when Murphy issued his last “directive” our district decided to start the year remote only.

I also had a (big)bin of school supplies when our 3 boys were in elementary school that they shopped from during high school too! They're now 25,23 &19 and now my girls r shopping from it @ 6 &14!! Yes...I had THAT MUCH! I shopped for supplies on clearance after school started n topped up the basics adding to the bin for the next year! Saved a TON of $!!

It really is like a gift to yourself in so many ways, reduced spending (free money!), celebration of how far you've come, and just reminder of the organization systems you've set up that are beginning to take effect and more importantly let you live the value of the items rather than it "dying" slowly or getting impacted via water damage or just time without getting used. SO DANG AWESOME!
@pyrobunnymaniac
@pyrobunnymaniac 4 жыл бұрын
Also unrelated, but on another video I saw that you had gifts you had to give running out the door; it looked like a new b-day card/bag was shown and with all the cards, b-day bags, and that card organizer binder if it'd be worth to put in a cubby in front so you have on-the-go access if that is a frequent thing? Not moving all the cards or bags you own, just select ones to pick off for those occasions rather than going to the card/stationary bin each time. Then if that gets low you can refill from your bin? Idk, just randomly was thinking that.

It's still crazy to me how different small things like buying school supplies are handled in different countries/cultures. In my family we always reused the stuff from last year. Your pencil is long enough to sharpen it? Well then you can still use it. 4 pages left in your notebook? That's gonna get used first. Backpack and pencil case? Buy once, it has to last till it falls apart (literally). And that's not because we desperately needed to save money. Just because we didn't want to waste stuff unnecessarily. It feels so alien to me to go shopping for school supplies before checking what's left from last year. 😅 I don't want to judge, I'm just acknowledging differences in cultures :D
@sarahrobertson3939

There are also pretty big generational differences. I don't remember my mother even buying school supplies - the elementary schools supplied everything except backpacks (if we even used those for school?), which we had anyways for cross country skiing. For high school, I think we paid for it ourselves out of our allowances or she picked up a few things at the beginning of the year, but we never got lists. We decided what we needed.

My kids' schools have told us we HAVE to buy brand-new, exactly this, etc. It's downright rediculous. I've had supplies that I purchased come back at the end of year untouched. Our schools have caught the consumerism bug.

It also acts as a gatekeeper for low-income students. There have been years where I couldn't afford the whole list. My kid was scolded by her teachers because I sent what we could, but not all of it. Are neon pencils REALLY necessay to my child's learning? Does it HAVE to be a three subject notebook (more money) and not 3 One-subject notebooks (significantly less expensive)? It's silly.

I much prefer the U.K. model of the school providing this stuff. They can bulk buy from specialist suppliers and avoid duplicating certain items. The cost is covered by taxes so poorer people pay less or even nothing, instead of poorer people having to pay a much larger percentage of their income than the wealthy on supplies.

not a parents but I work remotely now, and it's been helpful to set up a dedicated area where I can "be at work." Since you have a whole playroom, I would suggest turning that into the classroom. That way, all school supplies can stay in there, and you can have the feeling of "going to school" and "leaving school" when you enter and exit the room. It could also be a good push to maintain that room and declutter more toys. also YES anti-shopper's high is great, "I didn't spend money" is a great feeling because it lasts, vs. the high of the buy wears off in minutes. it's because you know you did a good thing, vs. feeling guilt for spending money

Here's an idea (might not be practical haha) but how about if you empty two of those wicker, pull-out boxes you have in that organisation stand in the living room, they could store their school supplies for home and their spare school ones in there so, say, when a pen runs out they can just pop over to the box and grab one from there (that way it won't all get mixed up in the playroom). It might even be that they can fit their backpacks in there after a school day too, but I don't think that'll quite work xx

Here in Switzerland we have to by a bag (will be used for 3-6 years), sportclothes and shoes, and a pair of soft shoes for the schoolroom (they change shoes). Thats it. The kids get everithing from the school. If a pencil is short, they give it to the theacher and get a new one, same with eraser, notebooks, etc. In the 7. grade they also get a calculator. Of course, they have to give it back. If something gets lost, we have to pay. ❤️🇨🇭❤️

Great job! Several have mentioned using the cube shelf for the school-at-home supplies. On a previous video people were recommending getting rid of that unit if you could. I just thought maybe you could stand it up, there will be less surface area to get cluttered. That way whatever books/supplies you put them at will be at a more convenient height and you could maybe put some two 3M hooks on the side to hang the back packs on.

As a home school mom I keep a bin with current books and supplies in a soft pencil case. You could put it in your cube shelf that you have by the kitchen table. Maybe use the baskets already in the cube shelf If you can. Maybe you can have hooks at the end of the cube shelf for their backpacks. So as they need to put return to school work in the bag? I'll look for a video if I can find one that will help. So proud of you and your family. So much has changed. God bless you all

I have the Raskog (ikea cart) to my sons paper craft, beads etc. On the top shelf I have put plastic cups (found at home) with pens, pencils, scissors, washi tape etc. Even a smaller box with a handle (caddie?) can be used like that, it is good to divide the area with smaller containers. My absolute favourite organizing inspiration is "I'm an organizing junkie", she has a great blog where you can search for different topics like school supplies, home office, pantry....etc. Great site! And like some already suggested, the decluttered cube shelf can hold all the school materials and supplies. I'm sure you have some smaller containers to use,check in the basement. :) You are doing great, so happy for you!

So proud of you! School supplies is a big problem area for me. I started Back to School shopping when my oldest was a toddler. I'd buy all the art and craft stuff I wanted to use during the year, because I couldn't afford to buy it throughout the year at full price. By the time I had 4 kids, I'd be spending $200+ at back to school shopping. I started trying to cut back and see what I had and needed. But then we moved, and my current school district doesn't send out school supply lists till the week before school, which is after sales end. So I have to guess, and keep a stock pile. And even with that I need to go back tomorrow and buy more mechanical pencils because they are now using them in the younger grades so kids don't have to leave their seats to sharpen pencils. And now I have a whole stash of Ticonderoga pencils that won't be used this year. I've given up and decided to do what I'm doing either until my youngest 2 are in high school, or we move to a new school district. But thinking I might have my kids as college students shopping my stash. =)

School supply lists sometimes are crazy long. So this years list is exceptionally short considering. And I've never totally understood where all the stuff goes because I didn't always need to buy new stuff. But perhaps I'm just gentle on paper, pens, markers, backpacks etc. (I've got my backpack from high school in my closet still...makes really good carry on luggage for airplanes because it can be squashed into almost any space.) I'm trying to use up sharpies as highlighters for cross stitch...they never die! Regular highlighters last even longer too...die please already! To "refill" your school supply bin with clearance stuff, look at what gets called for routinely. Wide rule lined paper, composition books, pens, pencils, folders. Your kids are getting older so I'd buy as needed things like glue or crayons.

Yes! This year’s list was a little shorter so that did help! And that’s exactly what I’ve done in the past: if something was on deep clearance I’d buy it and keep it in the bin! Then I check off for the next grade's list and can make a shopping list so I know exactly what I need. The supplies go back in their bags so we can find them come fall. Lol Where will your boys be doing their work? Easier to give ideas specific to your plans. :)

I’m thinking of the homeschool section being in the dining table area. If I do it in the playroom, there will be too many distractions to focus! Thinking of decluttering 2 bins of toys to make room for schoolwork there!!

@@ahoardersheart I agree the toy room would be distracting. We are clearing things out to make room for a study/schooling area too - I have 4 elementary age kids (5 years - 11 years old) that all have to be on calls simultaneously and we live in a smaller house.🤪)

I would check out what’s up moms they have a video on back to school. I would set up a shower caddy per kid to organize supplies.

Depending on the condition of the boy’s backpacks at the end of the year! They are not exactly gentle with them 😅 Usually every 2 years!

How good to see your beautiful , happy face! Good organization sure does save money. Shopping at home is always the best. At my stage in life, purchases are usually limited. Perhaps donate what you do not need to the school?

Yes, shop your own closet (or basement 😉) that's a good thing to avoid new clutter to come into the house. We have still nearly 4 weeks to go until school starts and here kids will go back normally....so not yet stressing with school supplies, but we will shop too first in our cupboards before buying something new. 👍

I hate admitting this but I still have three subject notebooks left over from when my son was in school. That would be nice but he is now married with three children of his own with one that starts middle school this year. LOL
