In this Laundry Room episode: I share how my craft supplies are my hardest emotional DeClutter. I have been avoiding Decluttering this category for awhile but I couldn’t really couldn’t put the right words as to why. As I did some self reflection, it became very apparent as to why: my art, my crafts and every single supply was the physical representation of my self worth. Throwing any of it away, felt like I was throwing myself away. We know that is not true, so we need to start where we are while self soothing those fears and letting my Nervous System know that I am still safe if I DeClutter ANY craft supply

I worked in a craft store for years and ended up with more craft supplies than I could use in a lifetime. Then I had kids. When decluttering I had to ask myself “if I had an hour to craft this week, is this what I would choose to work on?” That helped me narrow down what craft activities were my favorite, because I like it all! I just can’t DO it all realistically.

Tip on organizing crafts: Pretend you are setting up a craft store, with items grouped by sub category rather than project. Then evaluate your craft store depending on how well it serves your 'customers' (you, your family). I find this a helpful way to help me step back mentally & emotionally when organizing. My personal craft store focuses on tools (lots of those!) & utilitarian items (glue & tape & hardware). I have a select variety of materials (ribbons & paper & fabric & paints, et cetera), packaged neatly and attractively - but not a lot of that. I mostly only add to the 'materials' category if I need stuff for a *current* project.

My thought would be to organise the white shelving unit in the basement, where you're planning to set up your craft area. As long as you have the shelving unit in the laundry room, there is a temptation to store stuff "for now." I'm speaking from experience, it's not a criticism. Or perhaps display your ponies there, and designate a shelf or two for dumping stuff. You know you do it so give yourself permission and space. When it is full that's your trigger to finish those tasks.

Ok, you're doing great for starters, and I think the "baby step" of just doing this corner of the laundry room before you tackle the craft bins in the basement is a really great place to start. Here's my suggestion: Centralize all the craft bins (for example, you will take all the bins now on the white shelf in the laundry room and take them downstairs) and set up a "staging area". Grab a couple of bins from your hoarded stash of empty bins and start to categorize your craft supplies as if you are "un-shopping" at Michaels The Craft Store, grouping like with like items in their own bins as much as possible. Have a look at how Michaels categorizes items~ you could even have one bin for each grouping/ aisle at the craft store BUT BE SURE TO LABEL THE BINS! Ribbon with ribbon, Cricut items (including machine) with Cricut, sharpie markers with sharpie markers, glue with glue, tape with tape, etc etc etc. If you come across EASY give-aways or easy tossy-tossys in the process be sure to have an empty bin at the ready for each of these categories too. But your goal is NOT going to be "konmari" method for this as it will set off your nervous system too much. Give yourself permission to NOT GET RID OF ANYTHING if you are not ready to get rid of anything. Your ONLY goal is to "un-shop" all the items into bin categories. That being said, if you have obvious "excess abundance" in one category that you know you won't ever need all of it, group the extra like items you don't need in a CLEAR labeled ziplock bag, and set the grouped and labeled excess into a give away bin and say the phrase "As I am Blessed, so too shall I BLESS" which is your give away mantra. (Trust me, this helps). Then, once everything is categorized and labeled (which may take you several organizing sessions just to do this), take 5 empty bins that will easily fit one bin on each shelf in the laundry room and pre-set materials for one craft in each bin. So, one bin may be for a door wreath you'd like to create, one bin may be for a picture frame you'd like to make (I know your creative brain will have no troubles with this). Label the bin what the craft project is but LIMIT the projects to 5 bins one per laundry room white shelf. Stack up the big category labelled craft store bins in the basement, put the 5 pre-set craft project bins in the laundry room. But here's the rule. You are not allowed to START any new projects until you've worked through all 5 of these pre-set craft projects. So consider the season (summer and fall decorations for example) that you want to work on now. You only get to start a new project once these ones are finished. Then, you will take the EMPTY pre-set bins back downstairs and create new pre-set bins. As Dawn the Minimal Mom says: Let the container be the bad guy. I believe in you! 💜

I would tweak this to say you can only have a total of 5 projects on the go. If you finish one you can collect for another. You can return the contents of a project bin to the stash if you change your mind or miss a deadline.

The way I managed to declutter my craft stash, as I had similar reasons for acquiring so much, was to look at it as 'Stash Acquired Beyond Life Expectancy' (S.A.B.L.E) 😂 I have given things that I knew I was never truly going to have the time to use to friends with young kids or my son's after school childcare club & it felt good because I knew that they were going to be used rather than wasted.

To declutter, organise your craft stash, when you do the big sort, you have so many organising bins, line up empty bins label them with categories then as you go through your full bins pick up one item at a time just drop each item into the labelled empty bin. I think if you do it konmari style you will be so overwhelmed. Once you have all the items into the categorised bins you will be able to konmari each category. What you should know is that every crafter has a problem with hoarded stash, me included. I have just discovered your channel a couple of weeks ago and I have been binge watching your last 4 years of videos. You have come so far well done. Listening to your reasoning about why you cannot let go of your craft items because it is giving away your creativity. Consider this you are the brain power, your craft items are just the consumable. Looking at what you have created has been beautiful. The creativity is in you not the items that you have used. A cardboard box is still a box that can be recycled after it has gone you still have the power to create.

I also struggle with crafts and keeping it all. What I did is took a piece of paper and wrote down categories and then listed all what I think would fit under each category and kept the sheets for reference in case I forgot where I decided it should go. I then took totes set them up in a room, and placed a sticky note with the category on each tote. As I am sorting I'm also deciding what it recycle/trash, keep, or donate. For an example one category is "Sticky" so any stickers, glue, tape, etc anything adhesive. "Stringy" for things like twine, yarn, string, etc. "Paper" for things like construction paper, tissue paper, scrapbook paper, etc. "Misc" for things that didn't quite fit my categories I had wrote down. Others were : office supplies, wood, paints and brushes...etc.

Kids summer camps are coming up. When I was a Cub Scout camp program director, we could do crafts if we had the supplies or could get them on a shoestring budget. You might think of church, scout, park & rec camps that might like some of your supplies. You might want to have your shelf cabinet for craft tools and combine all your crafts together in like bins- gems, ribbon, fabric, scrapbooking, etc. Maybe you will want all your craft supplies in one place (basement craft area) rather than basement and laundry room to make it easier to know what you have.

This was huge! Congrats. I really wish I could get my mom to watch your channel for encouragement to her collections of so many potential crafts, so many she rarely has time to do any. I had an idea on the ribbon also, if you sort them into colors as best as possible (I know you like your rainbow spectrum in your clothing, just like me!), you might find it easier to wean some down when you see how much of each color you have but still have your favorites to keep of each color or whatever...just a thought :-)

Great idea! Multi-colored can be a category, and then from there even Christmas, Easter, etc. because a lot of those ribbons are multi-colored. That’s how I organize my scrapbook paper.

When I sort my craft items, I think about what supplies I use most often. Tissue paper and notebook paper are cheap and plentiful, so is copy paper. I have yarn in basic colors, and string, too. I have had a box sitting in my room, a huge one, with layers upon layers of stuff from years ago and recent stuff I've piled on top of it thinking I'll deal with it all soon. Well, all the recent stuff sank in and got covered with layers of clothes... The moment I put this video on, something jumped in me to take those layers of clothes off and really see what's in there. Here I am two hours later having emptied half of the massive box. I feel so much lighter. And of course, I loved watching the rest of your video too! This is awesome!! I always have loved make up and there's TONS of make up in the box. A lot of it is now unusable. And whereas before I'd save every single eyeliner pencil and single eyeshadow, I was so inspired by you to take those few I saw without lids, or which I'd really never used before or had doubles of, and just put them into my rubbish bag. 💫 Please don’t leave us behind! ✨ Haha! The progress is amazing, and once again I feel this is going to help me leap-frog my own emotional work… it makes so much sense! Being resourceful is me… but it’s not all worth my worth. I know you’ve also grown as a KZbinr and editor…. But something I personally have noticed is that I listen to the audio more than I see the video… the reasons you’re deciding to keep/ let go/ the audio for the decision process itself is written on video shots behind you talking about the emotional work. So I’m finding I’m not talking it in as much! For the “relatability” even “self-therapy” side of it for me, which is why I realise I found your channel so different to everyone else’s, is that you talked through the process of “how” and “why”… you didn’t brush over it. It’s obvious your decluttering muscles are stronger and quicker than a few years ago, and I wouldn’t want you to slow your own progress… I’m so proud of you! But I feel you with the craft things. The real-time walk and talk through the [pick it up - realise it’s rubbish - say it’s trash - and let it go] or from this video in a background shot [see a shoe - it’s too small - I can see if my nephew needs them - put in a designated area to contact family later] … in my opinion isn’t worth any less content-wise than skimming past it in a montage. In fact, that’s what made you so incredibly influential for me thinking “I can do this too”. Idk if I’m saying it right, because I love your videos, but I feel like I can’t keep up with it anymore and I have to really sit and watch the video to take it in and figure out how you’re doing it, rather than having it on in the background like I used to to work alongside. I have craft stuff galore, and its the thing I’ve been putting off the most (other than paper! I know what you mean when you said it can feel like throwing yourself away. That's how I feel about certain sentimental items that were given to be by friends or family. To get rid of grandma's old tea towel is not to throw grandma away, but it feels like that sometimes. I have waaaayyy more art supplies that I have bought over the years; different phases of life, different interests, also recovering from trauma and I guess it was an attempt to find peace . I am on a decluttering journey right now but at this time all my art supplies (some not even opened…) are non-negotiable; they’re too much “me” and like you said, it would be like throwing a part of me away. I love your videos, they give me hope. I have other things that I’m less attached to ( but still very difficult to let go of) before I reach my art supples (which are neatly stored but right now not being used as my focus is clearing and understanding emotional clutter).

This really resonated with me as I am a craft hoarder. It's probably my last big "collection" to go through but like you say it's the hardest one. It's part of my identity I guess. But with the help of my kids I was able to go through all my fabric and wool to take that down from 10 or more bins to 4. Since then I've done my stamps and most of my ribbon. So proud of you starting this emotional decluttering journey. I think getting some crafts together to donate to a school, local nursery or nursing home would be a great idea. They would benefit from your gift giving (which I know makes you happy) and you will benefit by reducing the amount of things you have. I wish you luck on this new part of your journey. Have you ever heard that artistic / creative people tend to be more disorganized/ chaotic? My daughter and I both display creative / artistic personalities and we both tend to struggle with clutter/ hoarding and being a little disorganized/ all over the place. We are working on it!! I gave all my crafting to my Amish friend she has 13 children they make cards to sell at market to the English people. I stopped doing crafts . It was such a blessing to all of them to receive all of it! here are many places that would love your crafts such as girls scouts, nursing homes, Amish folks, churches that have Sunday schools etc etc

I love the ideas in the comments about taking all your craft supplies down in the basement and doing a big like-with-like sort through, then you can see what you are working with and can do your reverse konmari method on the categories and then after that point can evaluate and see what the best setup for your crafts would be. I personally think this area of the laundry room would be better served to be a collection zone for the things that gather in your laundry room - things to be donated, items for the garage etc so you aren’t piling on the floor/in front of the door again. I want a huge craft area for you in the basement!

I'd recommend to get all your craft supplies together and break them down into smaller, more managable categories (e.g. scrap booking, Holiday craft ideas, ribbon), Most important ist, that you dont get overwhelmed by one category. I find that a lot of individuals with hoarding issues seem to be more artistic. They see the potential DIY project in everything. In addition, because they collect things and are disorganized, they end up having multiplies, because they forget they have supplies or can’t locate them. I hoarded cross stitch. In downsizing several years ago, I had to recognize that there are only so much time, in all fairness, I didn’t have enough hours to stitch everything that I owned. Time to let things be rehired.

My crafting provides me with two great hobbies - Crafting and Organising My Craft Supplies. 😂 There’s nothing I love doing more. I have been looking forward to seeing how you tackle this category. I like what others have said about thinking like a craft store and also sorting into larger macro categories ie. Scrapbooking, Sewing, Beading, Seasonal craft etc I think they are great suggestions. Also someone mentioned having Project Bins or making a kit of supplies for something you want to work on. I find when you have a large craft inventory it can make it easier to get creative when you have some limitations or a smaller sampling of supplies to work with. When you do your big Kon Mari on your craft supplies, would it work for you to first sort like with like, then decide which you can let go of? That way you can see how much of one item you have, like ribbon. Then decide how many containers of ribbon you’re going to keep, etc. Decide on a boundary. I recently sorted random craft supplies by bagging them up in gallon sized ziplock bags and putting those in a bin because I don’t have enough of each item to fill a box. Those categories were rope, succulent plants, wooden tags, yarn, fabric, etc. Can’t wait to see these upcoming videos!

You may be heading there, but I would suggest sorting into categories. Either for each type craft, or tools, glues, papers etc. Then you can KonMari-style declutter each category. Much easier to declutter when you see you have a lot of something, or multiples. Best of luck!

And also labeling the things you are categorizing now, so that when you Kon Mari things in the basement, you can easily grab the things in your laundry room for a certain category to go through at the same time.

Craft supplies like to multiply like rabbits. I've only spent $20ish on craft supplies so far this year (did I actually need any of it? Yes...a few replacement skeins of floss I ran out of, but most was stash enhancement due to sales. But I've also started playing around with a cake of yarn, and I've used other cross stitch fabric for a gift project. So my stash has been touched, and some of it will leave the house. (Yarn project will likely turn into 4 small blankets that people can put onto infant car seats...my round loom was clearly not big enough to do what I wanted, but hey, had to try and it didn't end badly. My supplies are roughly organized in yarn, cross stitch, beads, scrapbook type supplies (to use to make cards from cross stitch), fabric, diamond painting extras, then a few boxes of Misc stuff from a relatives stash which occasionally comes in handy. It probably would all fit on your 1 shelf, so I think I've kept it pretty well under control. It's probably already SABLE level for me as I tend to do big projects. But hey, I usually can start making a gift on a holiday weekend when stores are closed, so I'm not mad about it.

I left my craftroom declutter until last, too. Not being on the hoarder scale, I was not emotionally attached to my craft stash. However, I also kept cardboard tubes/boxes, and bits of all kinds of things that others would consider junk, because I could see the potential to turn them into something pretty. In the end, I had to acknowledge the reality of the space available for crafts, and the likelihood of me ever actually producing anything from my stash. It took me three passes, but I finally have it down to a manageable size. I listed a huge bag of craft stuff on fb marketplace and it was snapped up within an hour, which made me feel much better about letting go. Now, I have reached the point where I do not buy any craft materials unless I have a definite use for it in the near future.

One thing that jumped out at me was the Clearance tags as you were going through your craft supplies. I am a sucker for Clearance items and hone in on them when I get into the store. I probably would've never bought the items at regular price, but once they are substantially reduced, I can't resist and my creative mind juices start to flow on how I can use these things. I convince myself that it gives me the opportunity to "try" an expensive item for a fraction of the cost. But in the end, I don't ever use it, or I only use it once and never touch it again. I was surprised to see that we own so many similar items, and I am guilty of saving "trash items" for future projects, too (I like to think of them as "recycled arts&crafts projects" that don't end up in the landfill). This video was very eye-opening for me. I've gotten better about getting rid of general clutter, but when it comes to my art supplies, I'm having a hard time letting go. I will be watching more of your videos and hopefully learning how I can evaluate what to keep and what to give away (and how to let go). Thanks for helping us "hyper-creative people"! 😊

Back in my garage today...Almost everything in a cupboard was a "tossy" "tossy"..Mostly stuff my husband saved for who knows why...He was a builder...From an old skillet, to outdated tech something?, to a broken hydrolic door opener/closer......Small cupboard, can't even believe how much was in there...I so look forward to these videos...Oh, and some boxes on the top of the cupboards that were saved for send back if needed...

August 2024. I haven't used my beads in a long time. I donated lots of beads and buttons to a seniors group. A bunch of my daughter's toys went to the free table at the local food pantry. I have a lot of stamps, I probably have more than 8000 with my digi stamps, but I think just 5000 is with wood blocks on them. I was very particular with my stamps and every one of them got a sealing on them, and they're all very clean, no stains even though they're all used, some is not used though, but all my wooden stamps is used, even though I didn't make a card with all of them and probably never will, but I'm keeping my stamps. I have spent a lot of time organizing my clear stamps and ez munted rubberstamps, and now I can see them and use them more than before when I had to dig through all the binders to find a stamp, and had stamps laying around that didn't make it to a binder. Now I have used Jennifer Mc Guires fridge bin system and I just love it. I had to use laminated sheets without pockets as I couldn't get the pockets, but it came out really good and all the sheets have pictures of the stamps on the front and the stamps hanging on the back. It's so easy to just get the bin and flip through it and place it back when I have used the stamp. My craft room is all clean when I'm done as I can just put everything away in minutes, but I not always do this at once, but within a few days if I'm sick. I was devistated to watch your dirty stamps, I kind of felt sorry for them 😂. I had to tell myself that at least she use them. 😅 Sorry, I know we're all different so no offence intended, but you kind of asked didn't you? Thank you for making these videos though, now I'm for sure going to go through all my stamps again (wooden that is not organized as I want). I have a lot of Penny black and House mouse and so on, I made all cute cards, but now I'm more into Tim Holtz style, it's the opposite of cute I think. It's never to late to try something that's new for you, and I have a lot of stamps that fit mixed media style.

This was amazing! Letting go of any craft supplies is huge🎉 For the ribbons I have seen people use broomsticks (or something similar) and slide then all on there. I think that would look amazing and work for your clutterbug style.

I think when you get your craft area in the basement you should turn that area of your laundry room into an outgoing shelf where you store the things that are in the process of leaving you house. That will always be part of maintenance. I have one and the key is to fill the shelves with boxes/bins/or labeled zones that group things by where they need to go or what action you have to take to get them out of the house. It doesn't make sense to run to a donation center for one item. The giveaway stuff needs a place to wait while its posted and claimed. Stuff or gifts to be passed on to family or friends need a place to stay until you see them without getting lost. Even the recycling or undecided might need a place to sit so it doesn't congest your laundry room. The shelf sets a limit. If it's full action is required.

And you are so smart for realizing you just needed to start out with a smaller space because the basement crafts were such a huge category. Im sure you got a lot of confidence from what you just did! And you can also think of it like the basement too. You let go of some things first and then as you keep going and categorize even more then you are able to emotionally let go of more things when you come across them again! anyway enough of my rambling. awesome video!

I have a lot of craft supplies in my bedroom from my mom and I collecting it over the years! We are doing a no spend on new craft supplies! We have two drawer sets in my room with all the supplies and we have been making creations for gifts and decorating! I am so happy I was able to fina😢organize the craft supplies after years of it being hoarded in boxes! You inspire me and more people!
