I used to shop to pass the time. If I saw something I thought I had to have, I'd put it in my cart and continue shopping. Before heading to the check out, I'd look through my cart. More often than not, most, if not all, would be walked back to where I found them. I could leave without regret because I already got passed the impulse to buy them.

I've done unshopping, too. But, I have been doing well using my stash for decorative pillows for our daughter, finishing cards, smashing paper pads, making quilt tops, etc. I allow myself a little splurge, when I have used up a lot more of my supplies at home than I see at the store that I can use, but I don't have. I won't buy dies that are a lot like the patterns on the ScanNCut, but once in a awhile, I find something that I have passed on before, and I can now use them, and they are different than the SNC, and I will use them! I only go to a craft stores once a month, if that, to get out of the house, and only if it is close to where I already need to go. 😏

This is not an organization tip but…….. I noticed that a lot of folks have paints (2 oz bottles) just sitting upright on self. They can dry out fairly quickly. If you tighten the lids and make sure top is completely closed. Then turn them upside down and this will keep the paint from drying out. I have mine upside down in a tackle box. You can see the colors through the bottom. Also you can put them together according to color.

I discovered after some soul searching that I was purchasing new things I did not need with money I should not have spent because of grief. My husband of 53 years passed away in April of 2018 and in 3 years I amassed a boatload of supplies. I committed at the end of 2021 not to buy anything new for 6 months (I plan to extend the deadline) and shop my stash. I am a cardmaker and have tons of papercrafting supplies so far I have used 6 full 6x6 paper pads for over 250 cards. I sent out 8 USPS large priority boxes of cards I was holding to cards for soldiers. I did weaken and purchased a stamp set and got free paper. when not creating I am better organizing my craft room and am able to find more items to use. I have not been in a craft store or the $ tree at all this year. I like the idea of dating the items to see if they are actually used. thanks for the encouragement

Someone had mentioned, on another channel, that if you are adding to your Amazon cart, wait until like Friday to make your purchase. This gives you a few days to think about it, and you may not feel that urge to buy it as you did when you added it to your cart. I cuts down on impulse buying. I also love spread sheets...creating an inventory spreadsheet can help keep you organized also. You can have a column for a basic description like glue, sort on it and you have all of your glues/adhesives listed together...You can track qtys, the bin its in, when last used/purchased. The best part is that its totally customizable to your needs.

Oh wow! I thought I was the only one who did that. I love making spreadsheets for just about everything. I've also taken pictures of items that are hard to describe in my spreadsheet like ornaments, ribbon etc. Then I created a power point presentation so I can see what I have instead of reading a description that makes no sense.

I guess you could call them craft supplies...I'm into Lego, and I have been on a buying kick lately. I've gotten into collecting old series...especially now that I'm a grandmother, I'm loving finding the old sets, and picking up Duplo for my grand daughter to have. I'm going to move my collection up stairs and cannot wait to organize and inventory it to see what I have. I have a bunch to wash and sort..that will come in time. I need to slow down on the buying so your post is right on time for me. If I keep going, I will be overwhelmed. I don't like the generic stuff, I pretty much buy either the things that will allow me to build buildings, like stores, town homes etc. I love the modulars, because of their archetecture.....They look so nice on display. So between those and my love old vintage sets, its costly. lol. I also love to cross stitch... I'm working on one for my Grandson who is due in July....Uggghhhhhhh....I need help. I was looking at the pattern and starting thinking, I can do a Lego Mosaic with this. I don't think there is any hope for me. ha ha! It's actually a great creative outlet. When you get tired of it, take it apart and create something else. But you have to be really organized.

My biggest tip is use Pinterest (or KZbin) for 5 minutes ONLY! Find some inspiration and then go do a project! You have to try it! Just make or create something! I’ve been doing this for a couple of months now and I have so many art journal pages completed, pretty much a project a day. And the bonus is that I can really see my artistic abilities improving. It comes down to - do I want my hobby to be shopping/ collecting? big NO Or a crafter/artist? absolutely YES! So I show some self discipline and do the projects and it’s rewarding and fun and my wallet is happier 😋.

I am a very impulsive shopper! But, I have found a trick that helps. I take a cart and when I see something that I want, or feel like I need, I put it in the cart. Then I walk around the store with it. Then before I head for the checkout, I'll think about the item in my home. Do I have one already? Do I have a space for it? Here's where the brutal part is...Will I actually use it? Then on the days where I actually have enough self control, I'll walk back around the store putting things back where I picked them up from. Most of the time it works. Sometimes it doesn't.

I only go into a store with a list of needed items. Do I have a lot of “self control”? I do when I have a list, if I just go in “browsing “ my basket would be full of unnecessary items - since Covid began I couldn’t go browsing and now, two years later, the desire to do that seems to be gone! That surprises me, however I’m thankful for the change! When I “browse” online, I leave everything in my cart for 24 hours. Then I evaluate why I put “that” item in my cart. I am finding that 90% of the time I remove most of the items in that basket. There may be 1 or 2 items that are needed, however the decision to wait 24 hours has proven to be very useful to me.

I went crazy when I got my COVID money. I had always wanted to learn to make cold porcelain clay jewelry, so I went out and bought all sorts of supplies -- beads, tools, paints, dyes, stamps....you get the picture. I was very frugal about it, only spent about $175 on the whole pile of stuff, but I haven't made one piece of jewelry because I slipped into the COVID depression and just couldn't tackle my horde of boxes so I would have room to work. I still haven't, and now I've totally lost interest in jewelry making. I think I'm going to donate it all to some sort of program that might be teaching children arts and crafts. It's like that huge Dremel set I bought 10 years ago because I had always wanted one, and I've only used it once. What I discovered is that I like watching people do crafts, but I don't actually want to do them myself.

I made a multitude of clear vinyl bags in various sizes to store my craft supplies in. Then I organized them alphabetically in boxes with whichever letter(s) applied. Example Adhesives - bag with glue sticks, bag with bottled glue, bag with spray adhesives, small bag with glue sticks. I have a box labeled Tools. Inside are clear bags with various crafting tools & their goodies. Example is my grommet setter and grommets in one bag. I have some boxes labeled by type of craft. Example: Clay = blocks of polymer & air dry clay + tools & accessories like the tiles I bake clay on and liquid clays. Another is labeled Jewelry & inside all my bits for making jewelry. In an under bed rolling storage container I have all my fabrics. It took about a month to make all the bags and organize everything but finally I know or can easily find what I have so I'm not duplicating when I shop. The other thing I did to reduce my spending was when I wanted to make a project.. I looked everything up & made a running total of the cost. Then I allowed myself between 50-60% of that cost for new purchases and made myself pull from my stash for the rest.

I loved the idea of taking a photo and waiting a day. I cannot physically do my old crafts so about a year ago I took up adult coloring and it’s great. There is so much to buy if you want…😊 now before I buy anything for my new hobby or my household I have a step. I watch KZbin videos on the item. It helps me decide if it is something that will actually be helpful to me and sometimes proves it would be a big waste of money!! So while KZbin can be an enabler of buying, I’ve chosen to use it for my benefit 😉. Hope you are having a great day!

This video is more important than most people would admit. During my last inspection of my apartment, it was decided that I had too much "clutter". I didn't see it at the time, but most of us live with our "stuff" for so long that we don't see it. I was forced to get rid of a huge part of my craft supplies. Not only did my tiny apartment suddenly look larger but I seriously don't miss the stuff that's gone. I did unsubscribe from a lot of places and people who were tempting me to buy and that has worked very well. And I took a collection of papers that I have and I've been going through it, making all sorts of cards and donating them. As you said, it feels great to create. I'm using up my stash of gorgeous papers. And my cards are going out to people who want/need them. And I feel useful to society once again. And I guess I'm "lucky" because I'm older and no longer have my own car, so I have to pay for transportation anywhere, so I don't get to the stores as much as I used to. And I just don't miss what I don't see. Great tips - all of them. Have a great day.

I use to be a craftaholic. But lately I look at the crafts and just don't even care to do them. I still sew and plan to make cards. But all the other craft items don't thrill me any more. All I can think of is trying to store all the holiday decor I would make. And rarely do I put anything out any more. Just to much. Plus all the kids (cousins, nephews, nieces I haven't any of my own.) are grown and no longer visit. I rather read a book. I still watch the video just because they are fun to watch.

Crafters are the worst form of hoarders, especially those showcasing their craft rooms. The supplies is a shopping addiction more then a need to craft. I have purged so much of my own "stuff" in the last 15 years and have truly discovered less is MORE!

Something I have recently, maybe just about a year, have started implementing is getting my purse planner out while I am in any craft store and physically writing exactly what I would do with the items I am thinking to purchase. Then I take a picture with my phone and walk away and look at other things and come back to my picture and my planner page and ponder my idea. The purchase seems so much less guilty if I have a plan written down. Sometimes I leave it and go home so I can think my design through better and tweak it and often go back that same day with a better plan that is worthy of my time and money. No more random ‘just in case I need it’ buys for projects that never happen. This Monday I did this about silicone molds at Hobby Lobby on sale. I wrote it down, sketched a couple of ideas quickly and KNEW they were a great purchase!! Came home and am already making the ideas I sketched!!😱😍 If I can’t envision a project that I truly would love to try then I don’t purchase. I will absolutely say that I am my most creative when I shop my own stash though. I loathe having to stop in the middle of a craft to run go get 1” burlap ribbon, for instance, when I can cut a strip off of a much wider one I already have. Love this video so much and I appreciate you!✨

Then I wait and think about it. If it is still in my cart I may buy it or it maybe gone out of my cart. If it’s gone I do not get it and most of the time I forget about it . Great tips. One thing I try to do when I'm watching all the creative people on KZbin is to make a shopping list of items I think I'll need when I want to make that project. I also do this when I'm crafting and I notice I'm running low on things. It may sound silly, but it took me a while of buying the same thing (velcro dots, anyone?) to start this habit. Keeping an inventory helps minimize buying what you already have. I just keep a google doc on my phone.

You helped me to realize that I did have a reason why I collect so many crafting supplies. My mother died suddenly in 2016 and I picked up crafting as a way to fill the hole she left in me. Buying supplies and making crafts makes me feel good while I'm doing it, but there is still a void there inside me. I lived with my mother and grandparents for most of my life and they helped me raise my 2 autistic sons. I can never repay them for that. My grandma died in 2013, Mom in 2016, and grandpa just died last October. It's been rough and now it's just me and my adult autistic son alone in the house. I find myself buying more things that I don't need but I have decided to do a whole house declutter now that it's warming up and the sun is coming out. I don't want to be drowning in stuff and I can be more productive when I can find the stuff I need for a craft from my own stash. Thanks so much for sharing and hopefully soon you can get your RV and start traveling.

You aren't alone. I really thought that during Covid I would get so much done because I'm a house hermit at heart, but I barely did anything craftwise. I very easily put myself on a buying hiatus a couple years before because I've got enough supplies to fill a small craft store. Mostly unorganized. But I realized that it's the searching and finding I like and it doesn't matter if it's for myself or someone else. So it might be beneficial to someone to offer to shop for someone that can't do for themselves or find out what a classroom might need and help them out with supplies. It may scratch that itch and make someone else's day. Thanks for sharing this.

I have given up on mega stores (Michales, JoAnns, Hobby Lobby, Dollar tree etc.) and will only buy small and or local. This means no more killing time where the temptation is greatest. When I do shop, it is not going to a huge cooperation but someone who knows who I am and what I like. Also in cutting out the mindless shopping I have become more creative with the things I do have using up my stash and saving money. Win Win

I’ve found that almost the minute I buy art or craft supplies (IF I don’t have a very specific project in mind) the inspiration to use it flies out the window! It’s very frustrating & has definitely made me think twice before buying something. Silver lining is that at least I’ve noticed that pattern happening

One thing that I have a huge problem with is hoarding things that are "free". Like an interesting looking piece of scrap metal - that could make a cool looking necklace if I sand down the sharp edge and add a hook, or the piece of tube left over once you use up a roll of vinyl - maybe I can use it to add some structural integrity to a project. Even something that someone is giving away and I don't have a use for it right now, but it's something cool or pretty and I might later and I'm not spending any money so what's the harm? What I ended up doing to curtail this pack rat habit of mine was purchasing one of those small 9x9 fabric bins from the dollar tree and designating that as my scrap/I don't know yet bin. I have a strict rule that if it doesn't have a place or purpose right this moment, it goes in that bin, and if it doesn't fit in that bin, either it can't stay or something else from the bin needs to go. It's really helped cut down the extra clutter :)

I just watched another video that the lady said she wasnt buying this year. I made me a list in October of things Im not buying any more till I am used up or it is something I will do now. I have a large basket full of projects, have not done but one. It is amazing to see what we have "in stock" and we just bought more, lol. moving stuff around is something else I wont do , I can never find my stuff, and spend all my time looking, then I have no time to craft. I share with my dau in law, her sister and mom, it is fun that they want my stuff, they always bring back leftovers, but I get rid of some stuff and they save money, yay! I have a lot of saved and liked videos, need to stop! Im slowly deleting dups. and some I know I will never do. I do that with Amazon, I will see something someone had on their video at Amazon I will put it in my wish list, and look at it again in a week, most time I delete it because I have 2 more things almost like it. Time is our best friend!

When my husband became so ill I had to stay home before the Pandemic, I found myself watching You Tube and all the people who did Dollar Tree Hauls and all the people who crafted those items. When I could get away I'd run to the Dollar Tree and buy everything. Even after his death I found myself buying. I finally stopped when I realized I wasn't making 10% of what I was buying. I'm now trying to decide what to get rid of. I do want to keep some to make cards, but I can part with 80% of this stuff.

I have my craft room all torn up to try to purge out what I am not using, and the funny thing is it also went into everything that is in my basement where my crafts are. I purged all old bills and papers and so far two garbage bags of shredded papers I don't need...lol and I will probably have two more. I also decided to not buy anything more until I have used everything I already have. Feels good to use up what I have. Haven't been in Dollar Tree or Hobby Lobby for two months. I will not purchase anything right now unless it is a specific item and then I usually have to get from Amazon. Very good tips. Now I have to reorganize what I tore up....lol

Having cleaned out my parents house is what is keeping my shopping for anything in line. We only buy what we need. They had so many duplicates of vacuums, lawnmowers, you name it. Too many dog paths in that house. It took almost 5 years to clear po ur. It was a huge relief when we finally hired the junk man, then the professional cleaners to finish the job. Now, I have no desire to go shopping. Hobby Lobby and Tuesday Morning are my trouble makers. It's just easier to stay out of them these days. Sometimes, more and more, I can walk out without buying anything. I make a list, and stick with it, last time I bought anything was a certain needle to hem my husband's trousers, because I knew I didn't have that kind, time before that, a couple fat quarters to finish off couple gnome pillows I made for our daughter's home. Mainly, I'm just working on using my own stash, now. And purging some books, fabrics, and other odds and ends.

If I'm making a craft for a present in the future, when I bring the supplies in, I put the person's name on the bag and the date to give the present to them. Then I keep a monthly "tickler" file in my calendar 30 days before I need it. It stays in the current projects on a shelf marked current to do crafts. Keeps me focused on needed items and when I will need it finished.

Excellent tips, Norrine. I'm now retired, but when I still worked, I went to craft stores, stores that are the similar to Dollar Tree over here, stationary stores, and the experience was like that of a kid at the candy store. "I want this and that, and then some." It was a short-lived stress relief, because after I got home I needed to unpack the bags, and find a space for the stuff to live with me and the clutter piled up. Guess what, some bags ended in the closet, in the same state as I brought them home. Then I decided to visit those dangerous places only once every three months. It helped. Then I discovered online shopping, especially after I got rid of my car because it needed repair that was much more expensive than the value of it. Where I live, you can get by very well without a car and with the money I don't spend on a car, I can even afford to call a taxi every now and then. This month another threat is lurking: A craft fair in my area. I usually get there by public transportation, and after walking about on several thousands square feet of delightful booths, I call a taxi to get home. I always write down a wish list before I go to the fair, compare it with what I have to get the shopping list, then set a budget (say, $100), check the prices at my favorite online craft stores. Every time a few items on the list will get crossed out. Yes, that's some work, but really worth it. I have the joy of shopping without wrecking the bank account. Last summer I gave lots of crafting supplies away to not so well-off families with school kids. It was four of those big blue IKEA bags full. Giving things away is also fun, because "someone's trash is somebody else's treasure", and you know that it is still useful. I'm slowly reaching the status of living with the things I love, yet there is still a lot of work to do.

Another tip is to stop watching so many YT influencers. They are trying to sell products whether we know it or not. Like many have already said, I frequently shop online & add items to my cart regularly. Then I wait until there is a sale on. When I get an email notifying me of a sale, I go back thru the cart & see what I really need. There’s a downfall tho, I’ve wanted a particular set of ink pads for a while now, and just yesterday I got a sale email of 20% off so rushed back into my cart to purchase them. One set was unavailable 🙁 I also have a wish list photo album on my phone. So when a really good sale is on & I have some $ to spend, I’ll only purchase what is on my wish list. Nothing more! I have a tendency to overspend when there is a sale, on stuff I don’t need, or already have! Awesome vid Nor, as always ❤️🇦🇺

One thing that I have found on youtube is that there are many craft and art channels that seem to love sharing their shopping hauls and or doing reviews of new products. I don't mind them in one way is that they allow me to see what is out there, but they also tempt you into buying things just because they have them. Another common thing is huge, well stocked art rooms that look they'd supply a class room or youth group pretty well and they even sometimes have craft items for so long that they have expired or dried up and become unusable before they've been opened. I think when that happens, there is a problem that needs addressing. There are also subscription boxes that youtubers commonly do videos for - a good subscription box is excellent for trying out new things, but they aren't helpful if you've already got a lot supplies or if they aren't your thing.

Happy April! and Thank you for this video. Back in Jan. I told you about my daughter's Christmas present to me - 2 days after Christmas helping me to rearrange my crafting space. I spent the month of Jan. getting likes together and actually realizing how much stuff I had actually 'stuffed' away in a back room! I watch the KZbin videos (like we all do) and then pick up supplies when out to make these wonderful items. And I watch more videos, and round it goes. And I realized in Jan. (while sorting and purging) just how much time I was spending watching them create, and shopping to get stuff to create that I wasn't actually getting any creating done! Had to put both of my feet down and say don't go to the store, don't watch any new videos. I do allow myself to re-watch ones that I saved but only while eating lunch. While crafting now I put on a CD that I haven't listened to in ages so I can concentrate on the project in front of me. I'm saving time, saving money and reducing my stash. I rewatch your videos more than any other ones that I have saved. Thank You for your insights and encouragement. Good to know that I'm not the only one.

You are definitely not the only one!! I love doing crafts, part of it is because I am bored! I moved into an apartment after having a home and family for 34 years. So major declutter and reevaluations... But I love to make things - so would haunt the thrift stores to repurpose stuff for my apartment. But it is a hole that needs filling with other things - you are right. I have been making an effort to use supplies I have on hand and keeping things organized -(Side note: I loved your baggie idea for storage, it helped clear up a lot of those "few" items that are hard to categorize!!) Something that I have been experimenting with is, if I want something I write it in a notebook, with the date and price. Then I go back to the list every week to see if I still "need" it. I am amazed at all the things I wrote down, that I could have purchased - but didn't remember why I wanted them in the first place!! I have also tried to challenge myself in not spending money on anything but bills for a week, or two. Unsubscribing to the Dollar Tree Hacks has also helped me not feel like I "needed" to have it. - Thanks Norrine!!!

Ooo ooo ooo can we do a craft challenge on the FB group? I need an excuse to craft🤣 You just reminded me I need to curate my pin boards. I feel SEEN! My tip to convince myself I didn’t need to buy so much was I recorded everything I bought for a year (YT haul videos) and then I checked back and noted everything I bought vs what I used and realised that 70% I never touched. I was so shocked! So when I went shopping I began to put 70% of the items back. Making myself pick the 30% really made me focus on what I loved and what was just in my basket because it was a ‘good deal’. This was a good half way point to get me to the place you described where I only go shopping when I need something now. It have saved me a fortune and best of all, everything in my craft room I truly love 😊

I make a physical catalog of my stamps and update it every January. I stamp every stamp onto a piece of copy paper, and group by theme. So, if a stamp set has a birthday greeting, a Get well stamp, and a flower, I stamp the appropriate image on the matching page--the flower goes on the flowers page, birthday greeting on the birthday page, etc. Then when crafting, I can see at a glance which greeting or stamp set to use and helps me to realize just how many Christmas stamps I have! It also forces me to look at which stamp sets I used or didn't use in the past year and encourages me to purge sets and matching dies.

You are not alone! Thank you for your tips, I religiously put the date on pantry items when I buy/open them and on leftovers/ fridge items….. why not craft supplies?🤔

I've heard that there are two crafters: The ones who actually craft and the ones who buy craft supplies! Lately, I'm in the latter category. I've been a care giver to my husband that past 2 years, shop online and think that I'll have time in the future to do more of the crafting that I love when he gets better! For a while I cut off all temptation to buy, but found that I needed that outlet, especially when one of my favorite crafters lately became a designer for Sizzix! Now I'm buying up her new (expensive) designs since they really are different and very useful. (I hope that I can really use them in the future!) Thanks for getting to the heart of the problem!

Give yourself grace. You have a very difficult job that gives you zero time off. xoxoxo I can't wait to hear what you make once he gets better. 💐

I crochet. To use my stash, I pull our some coordinating yarns and hit Ravelry. I input the yarn weight, approximate amount and any other modifiers and search for a pattern.

@@TheCraftyOrganizer very! It's not an understatement to say I have a craft hoard 😬 I was going to dollar tree 3-4x a week at one point! I had to cut it out completely. The manager at my regular store texted me after about a month or so, to see if I was OK 🤣 while I do love to watch the haul videos people post, I avoid those now so I'm not tempted to go shop. If I do go in, I remind myself I don't NEED that specific item because I have several at home that are similar. I remind myself that I have at least 10 projects at home I still haven't made, so unless this is something I absolutely can't get by without making, then it can wait. I "window shop" on the hobby lobby website. I might put a bunch of stuff in my cart, but I don't check out. So I guess I feel like I've shopped without spending any money. Lol now I just need to motivate myself to actually go through all my stuff and organize so I can do projects again. I can't find anything the way it is now 😬

OH NO! Yes.... Not going is what helped me the most. If I really wanted an item, I'd do my very best to only grab that single thing.

I, too, am so easily "influenced" by You Tube and want what they recommend. My solution....Amazon Wish List. I will post it there so I can look at it latter and decide. This way I don't worry about remembering what I saw.

I stopped going to craft stores or the craft isles. I would find yarn I love & think of a project that I would like to make with it. Then I wouldn’t get to that project or the yarn works up differently than I thought. In the end I realized in the past few years I have more yarn than I can possibly knit. I took 60 skeins to animal shelter, I did yarn swaps with my group, Knitting 140 skeins of yarn into hats for shelter & head start.

I just can’t make myself de clutter like that. I bought purchased items, sometimes even forgotten that I had them, but it’s just perfect for something I make YEARS later.

OhTammy! I can relate! How often have I gotten rid of something like that that's been sitting around from forever and then wish I hadn't tossed it a couple of months later because I need it then. And can't get to stores, or.....look in vain in several stores and can't find that item!

Wow. Excellent tips. I have so much fabric that I swear I won't buy any until that stash goes down. Except I did need some because... LOL. But I do need to use it up. There's no room left in the sewing room to organize anything. I found that if I don't buy something and want to think about it for a day, I often can't remember what it was. So I just don't bother. If you can't even remember what it was, how badly do you really need it?

You completely 100 percent described me in this video. I had to stop watching crafting videos because of this addiction. I had to stop going to craft stores as well. It is ridiculous. Your advice is right on.

Craft supplies makes me happy. Reminds me of elementary school when "supplies" day came around. Our teacher took our orders for crayons, pencils, erasers, etc. The anticipation and excitement of opening that black rectangle box with all the pretty crayons inside. I remember the cost ... .25. And .25 for a hot lunch. A real cook and real food. And, the aroma wafting up from that basement! I began crafting in my late 60's. I've bought a lot but not tons. And now that I know my style (cards and journals) I can let go of the extras. Do I have regrets? Nope. I'm having a blast and now someone else can too. So, win win.

In my old elementary school, there was a large closet where extra supplies were kept and sold in the mornings. I loved buying a few needed things, too, and how inexpensive! I think a pencil was 5 or 10 cents. I liked the days when scholastic book orders came in, too. The box of 64 Crayolas that my mom bought me for most school years was a wonderful thing also!

During the pandemic, I was so grateful to have supplies to make art, but I can see how it is tempting to buy stuff. I love to gift arts and crafts items to teachers for specific projects for their students (locally).
