For February we are decluttering the Messy Master Bedroom bc over the past year, clutter started to pile up again. I didn’t want to feel guilty and put shame on myself because I couldn’t keep it neat and tidy for a long period of time. I literally changing behaviors & habits that I started in early childhood. I need to recognize what my baseline is and take steps toward the next achievable level. That way I start to make that my new baseline. If I thought I could have minimalist habits instantly, then I would be trying to be in a perfectionist. No one can be a perfect and we should never put that pressure on us. We need to give ourselves love, grace and try it another way again 🙏🏼♥️

You should put a mini tossy tossy bin at every corner which collects clutter. One just right beside your bed would be helpful to collect the obvious trash 😊 once a week you’ll go through all of the bins and recycle them. This can also be a task for your boys if they are willing to help. It might turn into a treasure hunt for them 😊❤

Havent finished the video yet, but I want to say that I just love the attitude of not being hard on yourself or having the unrealistic expectations. 2 steps forward one step back is still forward. Also, I think its wonderful too that you can acknowledge the "sliding back" and instead of saying "i give up" you're taking a moment to notice and then address it. Thank you for sharing this, helps me feel better about my messes too!

Since decluttering 90% of MY stuff (not my hubby's or other family members) - the ONE collection I still have are my crystals & stones. (I did take my valuable ones to a local shop and sold a LOT on consignment and made $500!) That being said, I went to Walmart and bought some pretty glass jars (like what you put flour and sugar in) and placed my crystals and stones in the jars. I can see them, but they are all in one place and I only have to dust the *jar*, not each crystal (every now and again, I empty the jar to look at each crystal and enjoy it! Then I put them back)

So satisfying and look how quick you cleaned up! I think going through your nightstand and getting it set up for use instead of being storage will be super helpful. My only comment is do you have a trash can in your room? I find that if I put a piece of trash down instead of in a bin it will attract more and more. And since I’m not putting anything gross like food in it I can go through the can when it’s full and sort out any recycling when emptying.

@@ahoardersheart I had never associated the ADHD brain with the clutter brain. This has given me a new perspective on my own self, and why I tend to hoard, and struggle to declutter and let things go. Systems that work help so much. Thank you for your encouragement to not bad talk myself, but to just try and do something. Little by little we get where we want to go! Today was my day I had set aside to do some real decluttering. This is giving me a good mental boost to move forward.

It does often pay off, even not being a hoarder. I have one desk drawer which I pretty much just put anything I didn't want to "lose" into b/c you can never find that "safe" place you put things, and decided to de clutter it. Well at some point I had been putting birthday money I was given into an envelope to help save up to buy a house. I found that envelope in there....and since we had already bought the house(a couple of years ago), it was even nicer to find. That being said I did use to keep everything b/c my family was always of a mind of "you might need it someday". I had a friend force me to clean and declutter my bedroom when I was younger and without her having done that and getting that feeling of a clean space early on, I am not sure what my spaces would've ended up looking like. And I still find myself sometimes hanging on to things that "I might need someday" only to later realize that its something i'm either never going to need, or so easily replaceable, like get more of it without even trying, that there is really no need to hang on to it. That and I am probably still holding on to a bunch of paper I don't need, because while I do not find it that difficult to go through items. I have a really hard time differentiating what paper needs to stay and what needs to go. I am absolutely amazed how easily you seem to get through your paper clutter. I usually get part way through and end up having enough and just throwing whatever is left that was obviously a "tossy tossy" back into where ever I took it out from.

I watch your videos before getting started on my own place and I have to say your wisdom is something that is so wonderful - so many other channels will show great decluttering but without that core conversation as to WHY folks might have trouble letting things go or get overwhelmed once they get started. I love how gentle you are on yourself, which allows me to remember to be gentle on myself too. I come from a home where you'd get yelled at WHILE cleaning and this video somehow unlocked that memory for me (in a positive way) and with that knowledge I can heal that part of myself and say that I don't have to feel shame anymore and no one is standing over me yelling at me anymore. Thank you!

I believe that I struggle with hoarding. My room was always messy. I have an autoimmune disease that I’ve had since I was 16 which makes it to where I never have any energy. In fact I’ve never really felt super rested in my life. I am also on the spectrum and struggle with comorbid anxiety disorder and severe major depressive disorder. I hoard all of my old drawings and writings from when I was growing up and a teenager, all of the t shirts from various events, all of my old toys, old stuffed animals and constantly bringing in more stuffed animals and dolls. All of the cards ever given to me by friends and family. I think it’s because I was bullied a lot, misunderstood and alone, always had a hard time with my dad and constant arguments. I didn’t much enjoy growing up except for new toys. We were low income so we constantly thrifted. My mom always has had somewhat of a shopping addiction I’d say and we loved to find bargains. Every card I was given meant so much to me. Because it showed somebody thought of me and cared. And now I’m struggling because I can’t let them go, the cards, the stuffed animals, the toys. And of course I feel constantly weak, tired, depressed. Cleaning is hard for me. With clothes and even food I hold onto things because what if I need it someday. It’s like I’m afraid I won’t be able to afford to get what I need. I don’t know, I guess I’m just ranting and I apologize for that. I just don’t want to live my life as a full blown hoarder in filth like I’ve seen on TV. But it’s so hard to clean and it’s so hard to let go of things. But yet I know they don’t really make me happy. They’re not really of any value. I’m also afraid I’ll forget who I am. I was so alone. I don’t want to forget myself since I was already forgotten by others so much it feels like. But I guess it’s just good to see someone who is going through something similar.

Late to this but you might be encouraged by going back to her very first video, which is from 2018 I think. Firstly, I'm super proud of you for all of your healing from your hoarding and ADHD habits! You are a really good lived experience educator and I'm completely fixated and fascinated by every single one of your videos. Secondly, yes, I would very much like to see a video where you organize your night stand and around your night stand as a butterfly. Thirdly, on a move forward basis, I would challenge you to process all incoming shopping and gifts at the kitchen table and refrain from bringing bags of ANYTHING into your bedroom at all, and only bring processed clothing (eg. new but tags removed; washed and dry and ready to hang) that belongs in your dresser and closets into the bedroom and when you walk into your bedroom with them remember "Don't put it down, put it away". I would encourage you to keep your "unprocessed piles and bags" of stuff centralized at your front door near your kitchen table until you are ready to process the contents. That way, you are less likely to forget about something you bought a year ago because the kitchen table is a high traffic area where as behind a door in your bedroom is not. Also, I would encourage you to centralize all paperwork (including receipts and bills) to your kitchen table in your mail basket, again, until you are ready to sit down and properly process them (Look up "Sunday basket Organize 365"...I think it would work really well for you and will help you conquer your paper clutter migration once and for all). Lastly, you may wish to designate your bedroom into the very specific "zoned" purposes of sleeping and resting, clothing storage and "romantical time" with hubbie and nothing else. If an item doesn't fall into those 3 categories, it's a good idea keep it out of the bedroom. I actually think you are at the point of being really, really close to organizing and managing your bedroom in a way where you are actually going to break your old habits in this space once and for all, and your bedroom is going to be able to stay clean and tidy on a move forward basis. I believe in you. You got this! 💜

I am sure this has been suggested but may not work for you (you seem to have your own system) Every week, the evening before garbage pick up - we go through every room looking for trash and recyclebles. (AS much as we can find.. ie. emptying the dryer lint trap) It's almost turned into a contest lol Its also the best day to do a quick scan of the fridge and toss out and old leftovers! I am always amazed we are able to fill up both bins every single week... and we're not even really decluttering any of our belongings anymore.. just getting the obvious trash and recycling out.

Since I was sick yesterday, I looked at declutter videos and this has been so motivating and inspiring for me. So many others struggle with the same things I struggle with----I need that affirmation that I am not alone, not stupid, not lazy, but have a common problem many others also have----and, can overcome and move forward in my life in my growth as a human just as they have. Thank you everyone for your comments that help me to even start the process!

I am in my 60’s and it’s just my husband and I and I don’t get mad at myself anymore. It’s just the way I am. My theory is if someone is coming over I can clean up in 30 minutes all is good.

I need an backsliding bin! I just got back from vacation and I did a big "give it a home" spree. Guess what? It took one day to unpack! My bedroom wasn't finished when I left so thats what I am working on. Anybody got a good space to display crystals? Thx for the inspiration as always! Love you🥰🥰🥰

Omg I love the idea of the nail decals in the photo album! I’m going to do this with my sticker collection so I can see them all and enjoy them!

I am so excited to see you go through and organize your nightstand, there is so much cool stuff in there! also not trying to be the internet police here but just have to say essential oils are toxic to cats. I had no idea and I had to stop using essential oils, incense, room sprays... basically all of those things can give cats asthma and more severe illnesses, including death. I guess they are pretty bad for humans too because this year I found out that I am allergic to purfumes, only after i developed asthma :(

Your room looks awesome, great job. My bedroom looks like yours also, before you decluttered I mean. Lots of stuff, unbelievable amount. I just have such a hard time letting go of things, I’ll keep trying though, your very inspiring 💕🙏🏻😊. I just love ms. Pepper🐱

you said some of the collectiob is from last year. but what i saw on your nightstand was remnants of the flu. between your very bust holidays and then that horrid flu everyobe was slammed with looks like you didn't do that bad. you need a wastebasket in your bedroom it might help with some of this "end of the day to tired" stuff. I use those everbreeding plastic bags as liners for wastebaskets in the bathrooms and bedrooms.

An idea for the essential oils… I have a rack that I hung the wall. For others, I bought a tiered nail polish holder (with individual squares) and have my oils stored that way. I am not a butterfly but I think it would still display them nicely for you.

Maybe it is easier for you make a downloadable link to put the no spend challenge in your video description. People can just download it themselves if it doesn’t work :) I love the fact that asking by email is more personal ❤

I don’t believe anyone here is “upset” about your backsliding. Backsliding is an important part of behavior change! It’s like Thomas Edison and the light bulb; backsliding helps us to learn about the behaviors that don’t work so that we can reprogram into ourselves behaviors that DO! Don’t underestimate the AMAAAAAAZING work that you have done! I’m proud of you! I don’t have hoarding disorder BUT I have a hoarded home (that I am decluttering currently!❤️) and YOU showed me that change IS possible! Keep going, honey!🙌🏾❤️👏🏾😭👍🏾

Rotation of bracelets!! I love that!! I tend to only wear earrings and always the same ones. I love the idea of intentionally wearing a rotation of different pairs, to add a bit of joy to my life! Seems like such a simple thing, but it really inspired me!! Thanks! 🥰

I wonder if it would help you with collecting less clutter if you informed yourself on how things are made, who sews our cheap clothes and how we deal with trash. Knowing about the environmental impact has helped me to buy less since I see things more from the perspective of others and nature. I have started to loathe big stores that year after year try to up their sales with selling us trash.

DL, I wish I could give your comment a million thumbs up. I came to the same realization years ago. I rarely go “shopping” other than groceries. Walmart smells like what I would imagine Chinese factories smell like. And don’t get me started on the cheap and cheesy home decor stores.
