Hi Kevin ,hope you can help. I used to smoke pipes fro 1982-85, started back recently. I have tried on recommendation plum pudding ,Maltese falcon, autumn evening, Eileen’s dream. Not crazy about any of them though I understand they are very popular. I used to like Middleton apple( now discontinued) and love swisher sweet cigars with wood tips. I prefer a flavorful tobacco perhaps sweet with some fruit notes. I suspect I might be a codger. Any suggestions?

None of the listed pipes on VF correspond to pipes I own. Are the “filtered” stems for the larger shanks like the James Towne? I got an “unfiltered” stem thinking it would fit the Dagner poker, and it’s way too small. Luckily, it totally fit my Little Devil Cutty. Thanks!

There’s an eBay seller that buys Missouri Meerschaums and puts there little spin on the pipes an sells them for a couple of dollars more, and I’ve gotten a couple from them and I really like them. I do like the forever stems as well because they are wider at the button which makes it easier to clench. But for the ones that still have the stock plastic stems, I like to get the extra small rubber bits for those. The stock stems being narrow the way they are, I always struggle to find a comfortable place to clench.

Hi Kevin, I'm pretty new to pipe smoking, but you and Mr. Muttonchop Piper have been amazing in helping me start my journey, so a huge thank you to you both. I do have a question: Why do my corncob pipes (Country Gentleman and Shire Cobbit by MM) seem to have wayyyy hotter bowls than my briar bowl Falcon? I'm using the Breath (Bellows) Technique (to amazing results with the Falcon), but no matter what I do it feels like the cobs get uncomfortably hot. Am I doing something wrong or is this just the nature of the different pipes? I have used Stokkelbye's PS-402 (straight Virginia) in each with the 3 pinch method in each and gotten these results. What would you recommend? Thank you so much for helping me out!
@hobbitonpiper
@hobbitonpiper 6 ай бұрын
Corn cobs are a lighter porous material as opposed to briar, but they should still never get too hot to hold, and if they do, it’s an indicator that you do need to slow down even further. Slow way down and sip the pipe. My corn cob pipes certainly get warm but never too hot to hold comfortably. It takes time to learn this but once you do it’s another game changer.

Great stuff Kevin - man you're channel continues to grow well, kudos! P. S. My fav corn cobs I don't think are presently available (but they were for a good part of last year, as limited ediions ie there was a good opportunity to acquire them)...that would be the MM Elite Henry, which is a chimney type akin to the General, and has just trumped that for me, for that type of big smoke! And the second was a BWC number, possibly #9, which featured a bowl from an old, defunct corn cob company, MM had appropriated w a shank and stem of own design, and sold... A similarly tall bowl, and good sized smoke, but a step down from the Henry, in that department😅 *in short, frommy exp, I would definitely recommend considering their more unique, special eitin pipes, too! 👍

Hi Kevin, Im new to your channel and YTPC in general, thanks for the content, I really enjoy your videos. I have a quick question as a new potential piper; would you recommend choosing a budget pipe for the first one, or would you say a better quality pipe is worth starting with? I really love the Savinelli 673 from a design point of view, but there are many budget churchwardens that I like too that are much cheaper, but I jmagine the key is in how the channels are drilled and how they draw etc. I think if I did take this up as a contemplation hobby, then I would only want to own pipes that I had really chosen carefully. Any advice or guidance would be very helpful, best wishes from Derbyshire, UK. Matt

I have an old Missouri Meerschaum cob. The shank is made out of a real cob; not just wood with the painted on pattern. Does anyone know when they started using wood for the shank instead of corn cob?
@hobbitonpiper
@hobbitonpiper 4 ай бұрын
My friend Russ says, “I have seen those but I’ve no idea of the date. The shanks are really thick and there was some sort of wooden insert for the stem to attach. The ones I’ve seen were typically diamond shaped and had a ferrule made of metal. My guess would be they did this at the very beginning and got away from it quickly. The corn cob pipes that were made long before Missouri Meerschaum ever came around simply had bamboo stems inserted through the wall of the pipe. He should write Shannon, Phil Morgan‘s daughter, who runs Missouri Meerschaum now. I’m sure they have some of these in the museum and she would know, or would know somebody who would know about dating.”

I really like your content and the way you share your knowledge and opinions. You don't off as some arrogant know-it-all, and provide some very kind and helpful information. At 55 years old, I just smoked my first pipe ever! I used a Meerschaum straight bit legend with Captain Black. I enjoyed it but felt like I had a hard time keeping it lit, as I had to light it 5-6 times. And because of that I had a hard time knowing if and when I was done smoking? I couldn't tell if the smoke stopped due to needing to lite it again or because I reached the end? Should there be about 1/4 of bowls worth of ashes when you are done? Again, thank you!
@hobbitonpiper
@hobbitonpiper 6 ай бұрын
I’m not sure if my first response to your comment went through, so I’ll try again to be sure. Don’t worry about relights, just smoke slow and relight as necessary. There may be dottle towards the end of each bowl (a combination of ash and moisture and some unburnt leaf) that no longer tastes good. Simply dump/scoop this out and then either end your smoke or reload. :)
@PiperCalvinist
@PiperCalvinist 6 ай бұрын
Thank you for responding so quickly! It did last about 35-40 minutes. I didn’t think about the moisture of the tobacco being a factor. I recall now someone saying they sometimes take the approximate amount they are going to smoke and sit it out for about an hour prior to smoking, and that helps remove some of the moisture that may otherwise keep it from staying lit. I think I may try that next time. Thanks again!

Hi Gary! Wow, 35 years and no cob. I think you should smoke one as part of your pipe journey, why not? If you do, let me know!Lots of rich history with corn cob pipes, you might enjoy it, for what it is. Briar is still king, but cobs are super fun and worth your time :)

Nice to see the country gentleman at number one, it was the first pipe I bought about 5 years ago, I'm not a very frequent pipe smoker compared to many people in the community, my country gentleman is probably my most smoked pipe in the collection, it still smokes well today, I definitely smoked it way too hot when I first started, it's been to work with me before, left in the car, not cleaned for days etc and it still keeps going. I'm at the point now where I have a couple of higher end pipes in the collection yet my country gentleman is still an absolute pleasure to smoke.

Happy IPSD! I haven't been smoking my pipes much the past few months, on account of winter in Minnesota not being the best time to be a pipe smoker, but today I got out my favorite corncob pipe-a Missouri Meerschaum Country Gentleman with a red amber tortoise C shape Forever Stem-and enjoyed some Mac Baren Vanilla Cream. After that I had a little Lane 1-Q in my Morgan Bones Milan for comparison, and while I definitely prefer the Mac Baren Vanilla Cream I can see why 1-Q is so widely enjoyed. It's mild and inoffensive, easy to keep lit and doesn't bite even when puffed absentmindedly, and tastes pleasant enough with a classic and nostalgic room note. Not too shabby =)

I do have a Country gentleman and a Great Dane (curved) with forever stems. But not a lot of people talk about the amazing straight Patriot. It has style, great colours, it is very light and clenches perfectly even for a straight pipe. It is my favourite corn cob pipe, especially when enhanced with a forever stem (I have a Cumberland style stem, really classy).

Hi Kev, Kevin here, I like all cobs. I especially if they're neked. That is unfinished. I have found that if they're unfinished they tend to smoke cooler and are easier to hold. These old hands don't seem to be able to hold things as well these days. I tend to smoke the Country Gentleman more than the rest but, I also smoke the the Pony Express and the Eaton for those limited time smokes 20 minutes or so. All are Missouri Meershaum of course being from Missouri and all. You might have some difficulty finding neked cobs. I am fortunate to live close to Washinton Mo. so I can visit the factory and pick out my own but, if you call them I'm sure they would comply. Ask for a Redish one. They do come in a variety of color. And of course I prefer the Amber Danish stem. No extra charge however they do sell some forever stems if you prefer. THANKS Kev, great subject. . Take care.

Thanks for sharing. I have a handful of Missouri Meerschaum cob pipes. My favorites are the Mark Twain pipes. I have both the straight and bent stem versions. I used to smoke aromatics in my cobs but slowly gravitated away from aromatics into English blends a few months ago. I started smoking English blends in my briars, but one day I decided to try it in a cob. It was like an entirely different blend of tobacco. With the briars, I could only taste the smoky leather of the Latakia and the bready goodness of the Virginia tobacco. With the cob, I can also get the subtle hints of the floral orientals and peppery perique in the Hearth and Home Black House blend that I love. Cobs are now my go to pipe for English blends. Now I want to order a forever stem for my Mark Twains 😂
