My first pipe was also a MM cob, bought in a local shop to get me started. My story mirrors yours in a lot of ways. What a fun journey it has been, and I'm still learning a lot.

First pipe ever picked up was a MM as well. Recommended to me by a local tobacconist. I’ll never forget that first time… Walking into the Smokey, dark lit room that had a fog hanging about it. Out from the back lounge an old man carrying a cigar emerged, parting the smoke as he came. As I looked around I noticed that his shop was very under stocked. The humidor had maybe two boxes of cigars. There were maybe 4-6 lonely pipes and tins hanging out in the glass cabinet, but it had a mystical quality. I introduce myself. The old man introduces himself as Paul while talking through a cigar between his teeth. I ask him about his shop and if he could educate me on pipe smoking. He took the cigar out of his mouth, put it in the ashtray and took a deep breath in like your dad about to give you a valuable life lesson. He grabbed a MM and commenced schooling me and pointed me to a very mild tobacco. I believe it was called Whitehall. In any event I walked out of that shop enchanted and hooked. I’m now a pipe smoker and have Paul to thank. Sadly he is out of business now. He retired, which I’m happy for him. He’s been there for 30+ years he told me. I hope he’s well. Anyways that’s my story😝

I have found that the neked or unfinished cobs smoke the coolest and for me the best. The Country Gentleman and the Fifth Ave. Apple smoke equally well. IMO

@@hobbitonpiper I have unfinished cobs 10-15 years old. I guess it depends on how much you smoke them and how you take care of them. Now that they put wooden plugs in the bottom they seem to hold up better. They only cost 8-15 dollars, why do you ask? Ha Ha

I'm in the 2nd year of my pipe smoking journey...started with a Missouri Merrschaum Legend and then a Country Gentleman both are wonderful smokers.Also enjoy my Dr.Grabow Rusticated Omega.Last Christmas I gifted myself a Peterson xl02 bent apple spigot it is a great Pipe and very well made and just beautiful.... but as far as Smokeability the corn cob's and the Grabow are just as good considering their affordability.Enjoy your videos very much! It's just not possible to watch one of your videos without leaving in a good mood. I was actually rereading There and Back Again today! I grew up in western Kentucky on a small farm and usually, if my grandpa was awake, he had a corncob pipe in his mouth. That's where I learned a love of the pipe as a child growing up in the 60s

So I’m a huge cigar smoker and collector, about 10 years ago I wanted to kinda get into pipe smoking so I bought a savinelli pipe smoked it about 3 49 times and I don’t know why I stopped. I read somewhere not too long ago that when Mark Twain (a fellow Missourian) was asked by an interviewer why he was smoking a humble corncob pipe when higher-grade ones were available, Twain replied, "Why, this is a Missouri meerschaum!", thus originating the name subsequently adopted by the company. Can't vouch for the accuracy of the anecdote, of course, but it definitely sounds like something Twain would say. His family and in-laws tried in vain to get him to forgo the weed. One of his responses was: "After all, what does tobacco matter? Let's have another chapter of Deuteronomy!"

Oh very long. How long a bowl lasts is completely dependent on the cut and your cadence. Many experienced pipe smokers prefer smaller bowls and can easily get 90 minutes from them.

I took the plunge and bought a few different pipes from MM. I have to say I am not overly impressed with the fit and finish of them. Having to make minor adjustements to make a new pipe useable was a bit of a let down.

I have a country gentleman it's a lovely pipe you have inspired me to buy the dwarve and hobbit corn cobs I also just got a little 7 inch joydelco briair churchwarden it was a 30 dollar grab off Amazon had a pouch pipe bag knocker and czech tool and some screens and cleaners it's honestly one of the best other than my cob iv found so far its nice lite and smokes nice

I have 3 MM Country Gentleman, 2 straight, one bent. The MM Shire Cobbit arrives in two days and I am stoked to smoke it. The only wood pipe I use else wise is a MacQueen Churchwarden. Love it long time before a lazy afternoon nap on the back porch but the Country Gentleman is the pipe I enjoy the most. I can't catch a fish without it.

I have one CG with wood on the bottom and a custom yellow-milky acrylic stem . Man, it's incredible! I own a shire like yours too and, well, not quite my favourite though. The queen is, anyhow, the Free Hand ahhhh ! You need one of them!

Great vid as always. Wondering how you feel about the gap between the stem and bottom of the bowl in the MM corncobs. Do you, fill with pipe mud, or just use it as is? How do you find the burn efficiency (ie do you find all the baccy gets burned under the protruding stem in the bowl?) Cheers!

I have no issue with them and no I don’t use pipe mud although many enjoy that. It’s a corn cob pipe, so I keep it as simple as possible for simple smokes. Tobacco burns just fine in them , and I also don’t get too caught up in the “down to white ash” concept. Some leaf simply doesn’t perform that way regardless of pipe and that’s ok. When it’s done it’s done, simply scrape out the dottle and load again when ready for your next bowl. You will taste a little of that wood in the bowl before that dowel gets charred, but it doesn’t take many bowls to achieve that charring.

I love my cobs. I have a Wizard Cobbit that’s great for long smokes. I do have a Country Gentleman, and it’s been a great pipe. I’ve found, though, that I prefer the natural finish, so I shop Aristocob because he carries MM unfinished pipes that MM doesn’t have on their own site.

The Cobbit Shire was the first pipe I ever purchased. It's also the pipe that I've had the most trouble with. I really wanted to love it but that's unfortunately not the case for me. It's the only pipe I own that gives me major issues with gurgling. The shank was loose from the start and leaked smoke between itself and the bowl. Eventually it completely separated from the bowl so I glued it back into place and sealed the leaks. The stem is also incredibly tight in the shank even after significant sanding so I don't even try to remove it for cleaning anymore. I keep telling myself to try another MM cob but I haven't pulled the trigger yet. I just love my briars too much at this point. I even have a few Flogglewerks and MacQueen pipes that smoke really well even if the bowls are a bit on the small side.

It sounds like you got a cob that wasn’t made quite right, it happens. When they are right tho it makes for a really good inexpensive smoking option. I have my eye on that MacQueen Briar Ranger pipe… :)

Hey Hobbit! I’m really digging the content. You’re doing it right! You asked in your last episode why cobs don’t ghost. Well it’s quite simple. The porous material like clay, meerschaum, and corn cob actually absorb the oils where the solid material of briar doesn’t. The oils sit on the surface or in the cake of a briar and vaporizes when it’s reheated, giving of its flavor. Cheers!

I have made what I call my “Ranger Cobbit”. I took a bent Country Gentleman and put the longest Forever Stem in black on it. It’s now a completely different pipe and definitely what I’d call a “semi-Churchwarden!”

There are MANY different ones to choose from (just type Savinelli 673 KS in on smokingpipes website or tobaccopipes website, and yes it’s going to cost you at least $80 minimum, but they are well worth the investment 100%. If you need cheaper recommendations tho let me know! :)

@@hobbitonpiper I haven’t smoked the shire yet, just got it yesterday. Right now I think the Apple Diplomat is my favorite, with the Mark Twain in a very close second. I like the look of the Twain shape better, but the Apple just smokes great. The Country Gentleman is a fine pipe, also. It can get a little hot if you go fast on it, I’ve currently reserved it for my Bob’s Chocolate Flake. I’ll probably use it with some of my other Gawith flakes, too. It has the deepest bowl of the regular sized MMs. I always use filters in them. Not too worried about the shire not being filtered, though. Im trying to decide what blend to start with.

@@hobbitonpiper Glad to be here. It's great. I'm down in Rolla, MO. Took 2 days to arrive. Glad I purchased it. Do you know if the stem is glued in? I wanted to twist mine just a little but it is tight and I'm afraid I will snap it

@@Justin28082 it is not glued in and important to remove for cleaning. If yours has the silver band, hold onto that part and keep it attached…only the solid black stem should be removed, so begin trying to lightly rotate it back and forth while keeping the silver ring still. Eventually it should begin to be lightly pulled while u gently rotate it back and forth till it comes out! :)

The country gentleman was one of my early pipe purchases, when all I was smoking was aromatics. What I have learned is I much prefer the surface area of a MM Pride or a rusticated or sandblasted briar. They stay cooler on the hand and I prefer the texture feel versus a smooth finish, although a smooth finish is much prettier! Your videos are very smooth and well paced. Enjoying the content and your analogies when describing the different blends in the reviews make it easy to digest and help to pick out the different nuances of the blends. Great work!

Agreed on the cobs! They seemed to be “less than” to me initially, but they are an amazing product, that really probably should cost more based on the production and labor that go into them based on a few videos I’ve watched on how they are made. I probably have 20+ on hand, unsmoked for when I know either I may introduce myself to a new blend, or possibly introduce someone to the hobby. They are consistent, affordable, and really provide a great experience, plus with the low weight, are easy to clinch. I hope MM continues their great legacy, and I hope you continue to bring great content, confidence and information to this community. You are genuine in your videos, and welcoming. A great fit for such a great community, educating, exploring, and just admire your love for the outdoors and all great things that have been created for this world to enjoy and observe! I have a straight and bent Country Gentleman. I do like them, but I’ve ruined my bent by smoking so many different things in it, and now it just always tastes like old dark fired even if it’s just an aromatic.

@@hobbitonpiper I’ve heard they’re pretty affordable. I will tell you that my favorite pipe by MM is my Cobbit Wizard. I only smoke it when I know I have a couple of hours. Super deep chamber and long stem make it perfect for any type of tobacco.

Just found your channel on Onions recommendation and I like what I see. The plaster like finish and the name MM are from the invention of the pipe and the start of the company. The finish and the cob material let's it act in somewhat the same as a Meerschaum. I don't have a CG and don't plan to. I have 14 MMs, and my favorites are the Missouri Pride and the Diplomats. Prides are affordable and the "neked" ones breathe more than those cobs covered with plaster stuff, and so give a cooler smoke and lighter pipe. The Diplomats look great to me and are a match for my hand, but the CG not so much. Checkout aristocob.com for better prices and great customer service from two YTPC members. And, if you get a chance (when things get back to close to normal again) go to Washington and take the tour. We thought it.was. Great! -- Kent

GREAT video, Kevin! I LOVE MM cobs! I have that same Shire Cobbit and love it! I also have a Country Gentleman. You gotta have one! I love the bare naked little Missouri Pride cobs. They are light as a feather and smoke really cool. BUT, MY personal favorite is one that I got from The Pipe Nook called an Emerald. It is a FANTASTIC smoker, and a gorgeous little pipe with a swirl green, acrylic, fishtail stem! I think Eddie is sold out of them, currently, but when he gets more in, I would encourage you to order one. They only cost like $27. Heck, I’d pay TWICE that (🤫Don’t tell Eddie Gray I said that😂!).
