As a former Hobie 16 sailor/racer/dealer, this is NOT a crash. It's called "beaching", although the approach was a bit fast.

@@LukksiaI don't remember how they are setup on a 16 but on the Hobie 18 there is a spring-loaded cam so when the rudder hits something it just kicks up. If you're out on the water you just lift up on the tiller and push it back into position and you're back to sailing again.

Sure, I still do this with my Hobie18 *on sandy beaches*. When a beach is this hard it's stupid to do, unless you really enjoy the fiberglass work and injecting epoxy to fix the delamination that's exacerbated from this hard of a hit. Drill a bunch of holes in your hull for that kind of repair and you'll be more careful not to abuse your boat in the future (speaking from experience).

I did this coming onto a little island in a reservoir in central Oregon and the mast broke at the base. It was late in the day and in the 70's way before cell phones so I had no way to tell my party the situation. I scrounged around the little island and found old boards and barbed wire and re-rigged the mast and gently sailed back at night to my camp just in time to stop a friend from driving into town to notify the sheriff.
