As a former Hobie 16 sailor/racer/dealer, this is NOT a crash. It's called "beaching", although the approach was a bit fast.

@@Lukksia no no, they removed the pin beforehand, they simply lift up. It looks rough but it's perfectly fine for this vessel!

@@LukksiaI don't remember how they are setup on a 16 but on the Hobie 18 there is a spring-loaded cam so when the rudder hits something it just kicks up. If you're out on the water you just lift up on the tiller and push it back into position and you're back to sailing again.

No white caps. 40 knots you will have white caps. The beaching was intentional it's frequently done because it's easier to get your boat on the beach than it is to drag it on the beach

Definitely not anywhere near 20knots. They are sailing relatively close hauled given the position of the main and jib, but hardly heeling. My guess is at the most 15knots.

I had a rental one in Oz.. the mast wasn't put on properly, I knew it was didgy, it wasn't of my doing.. theybhad to bring me back before I drifted out to sea. I thought thier rigging wasn't properly done I should have got my money back. I'm a hard sailor..I like to go fast and work the cat to its fullest I guess they wetentbr3ady for a real sailor...most aren't very good that hire the cats..lol...immconfident I'm an excellent sailor, I've never capsized in all my sailing years, I tried on purpose sometimes but I chicken out because I don't want to end up in the cold water lol...

My friend I met he rented cats at a local beach...he said the first time inwent out on one, he was amazed how fast I just took off from shore most people get stich trying most d9nt sail well..lots claim they can sail..bs he has to go out smd bring them in and here comes me that just whips out and zooming up and down the bay on one hull etc...

Once I offered to take a cat out(free cat hire lol)to go out and help someone sail back to shore thst wete going further and further away with the wind, I'd save him diesel from taking the dingy runner..rescue boat..I basically was teaching them hoe to sail back to shore..it took ages Vos we had to tack all the way back in..theybwete also slowly drifting towards the rocks at one point.

Literally what a hobies meant for ❤❤ had an 18' as a Kid in the Indian and banana river. Flipped it many times and pulled up onto a firepit before. She was built to last. New owners sent me pics of them nearly doing the same a few years after i sold her. Miss that thing cant wait to get one for my son and teach him to sail like mine did.

My dad used to do this with his Hobie 16 going through the surf and Landing it on the beach. These boats were made for this and it's not a big deal to add a sacrificial layer of fiberglass on the bottom when needed.

Sure, I still do this with my Hobie18 *on sandy beaches*. When a beach is this hard it's stupid to do, unless you really enjoy the fiberglass work and injecting epoxy to fix the delamination that's exacerbated from this hard of a hit. Drill a bunch of holes in your hull for that kind of repair and you'll be more careful not to abuse your boat in the future (speaking from experience).

Wow. We beach ours all the time filming videos when camping via our Hobie 16's, but only on soft sand and only a few feet up. It does look fun, but it may lead to less fun later when it starts leaking, goes slower, or is unusable.

Rudder pinion, gudgeon and keel all broken. Some clowns laugh at anything. Why didn't the helm luff up? He's have stopped in 10 feet. .edit... Comments say you can do that with a hobie. I notice he heeled it over just before landfall. Pretty slick. I also see that when he was landed he didn't release the main sheet. So... Idiot or experienced.. idk.

Max Hobie 16 speed is 27mph. They weren’t even hiked out. Maxed out on a reach you have to be in trapeze on back of hull behind tramp. Both of you.

I did this coming onto a little island in a reservoir in central Oregon and the mast broke at the base. It was late in the day and in the 70's way before cell phones so I had no way to tell my party the situation. I scrounged around the little island and found old boards and barbed wire and re-rigged the mast and gently sailed back at night to my camp just in time to stop a friend from driving into town to notify the sheriff.

I've sailed Hobie 16s, top speed is 24 knots, not 40 and that is a lie. They also had a tendency to pitch pole when the lee pontoons decide to dive. Instead these toddlers beaching the Hobie they slammed on beach.
