Reasons for the foam: -Batteries, boards, and even the temp sensor don't do well from repeated drops that take place from a portable unit. -The foam provides damping for the structural integrity of the outer casing during transport. -Different thermal coefficients and varying temperatures inside and outside the battery would cause cracking. The foam allows for vary expansion and contraction of materials while maintaining a tight fit.

It's a trolling motor battery. It's full of foam so it can float when it accidentally gets dumped overboard. A cubic inch of water weighs 0.036 pounds. 13" x 7" x 8.5" = 773.5 cubic inches. 773.5 x 0.036 = 27.86 pounds. This thing displaces almost 28 pounds, yet only weighs 22 pounds. It should float nicely. You may want to test that.

@jasonbroom71476 ай бұрын
That is one helluva price on a very good quality battery with LTCP. After your previous review of their Group 31 sized battery, I bought two of them for my home storage solution. They will actually all work for powering a trolling motor. To answer a couple of the questions you posed in the video; many boats have built-in trays which are designed for Group 31 or 24 sized batteries, and the max draw from most trolling motors (12, 24 or 36 volt) is typically not much more than 50 amps. That's far less than what the starter motor battery in a car or truck will draw.
@LordFalconsword6 ай бұрын
The reason they're keeping those so large is because they're ordering off-the-shelf batter cases, which further reduces production cost. A couple pieces of foam is pennies, having a manufacturer make custom fit cases would cost a $100k just for due setup.
@HOBOTECH6 ай бұрын

@hobotech my hobohobo My guess on the foam would be to: a) provide some protection from extreme temperatures with added insulation 2) provide drop protection and impact damage resistance for the batteries' intended-use environments C) add a "perceived value" to the end-use consumer. IKUKWIMR, who wants a little dinky battery when they're shopping for 'trolling power!'?

Most boats have battery trays or battery boxes that use standard size batteries. Southern Florida usually does not go below freezing in the winter for more than a couple of days a year and only for a few hours.
@Sylvan_dB6 ай бұрын
Yes, this. Unless they can make them 1/2 size to fit two in a standard space, they would also need to sell spacers to allow fitting the smaller battery in a standard space!

I use a lithium ion battery in my motorcycle. It works well because I rarely/never ride in sub freezing temps. The manual actually recommends turning on the headlight to self heat the battery in those conditions. It also works well because it can sit for a whole season without discharging or going bad like a lead acid battery, and it saves weight. It's more expensive, but I've already saved money by not having to replace it. It also has discharge protection with a power reserve, so I don't need to bump start the bike.

$239 is insane. One day in the near future we’ll get them below $200. I could imagine that all that foam is intended as protection for rough environments. So using a standard case still makes sense. So about using it as a starter battery. Using two in parallel might do the job. 300ah with 300ah surge. I would thing that different engines need different amounts of power to start them. I have a 50 HP Yannar diesel on my sailboat. These batteries might be able to start that up. But I’m also planning a 400ah housebank, which would have 600ah surge. At a minimum it could be a backup solution to starting the diesel.

@markeh19716 ай бұрын
Hi, might be easier to keep a lead acid battery just for starting the engine. Easy to get high loads as the compression builds on each cycle of the engine and a small lead acid battery is cheap and should last years! Take care M.
@TheCornucopiaProject-bd5jk6 ай бұрын
@@markeh1971 it’s cheap, yes. But so are LFPs now. And LFPs should last longer as well. But even if lead acid is around for decades, having a house bank of LFPs that can fill in in case of emergency is a good strategy.

@mattcouture2264 ай бұрын
Reason for the size is to keep it at a group 31 sized battery to fit into same trays most 24/36v bass/fishing boats already have in the boats. for the non trolling motor batteries I would agree the extra size is not needed but for bass boats, its ease of replacement for a drop-in swap
@spockmcoyissmart9616 ай бұрын
I have 4 Power Queen; tips for charging new: I have 4 in series in my system. charge each individually. Move charger to 2nd battery, charge it. Once all 4 have been charged individually, remove the charger and place all 4 in parallel. Leave alone for several days. This is the proper way to equalize all batteries ready for your system.
@Sylvan_dB6 ай бұрын
Almost. But it is better to also use the charger with the parallel batteries. And if the starting voltage is within 0.1volt max delta, then just connect them all in parallel to begin with and start charging. (0.1volt delta, over a battery internal resistance of 20milliohm, means 5amp will flow - this is fine. Even 10milliohm or 0.2volt is fine but I prefer to be more conservative and when you are connecting more than 2 in parallel you need to be conservative.) And if using them in series, once a year or so disconnect them all and do the balancing again. Or using a series balancer (LiTime and others exist) to maintain balance. Otherwise over time the slight differences add up between the 12v blocks in series just like they do for individual cells in series.
@spockmcoyissmart9616 ай бұрын
@@Sylvan_dB I went by power queen instructions. I understand the internal resistance/measuring, but most people here couldn't do that. What PQ recommends is a simpler method for those people. Of course, people have to buy the correct charger for their Lifepo too and don't use an old lead acid trickle charger.

But i also appreciate the added info regarding charging, etc. As for starting.... if this battery is used in a boat for electric trolling motor, seems it could be used as backup starting for outboard motors. Most fishing boats have both motors with house batt used for everthing except trolling motor. Having this trolling motor batt on a switch or using jumpers one could possibly use it as backup to start the main motor. Size of outboard and how long it cranks may become an issue i suspect.

Thanks for the great review! Is this the same company at Litime? if you read the warranty policy for both they are basically the same with the exact wording in many places. Also, one thing that I found concerning in my research of Lithium Trolling motor batteries with LiTime and I assume with Power Queen is that the "5 year warranty" is a prorated warranty and after the first year you will be responsible for shipping charges. I had to ask Litime several question to get a clarification on this warranty which I feel is deceptive. I have not found it stated anywhere on the website. This point should be clarified in reviews because many of the higher cost trolling motor battery companies offer much better warranties, granted at a much higher price. How about making a direct comparison review between trolling motor batteries from Power Queen or Litime and Impulse or Power House or Miller tech.?
