Hi Goalie here. I hate deflection training it's usually where goalies get hurt especially when it gets deflected into the air toward your upper body and head. Many blue and purple marks will be collected on your body and the worst is when the ball hits straight on the face mask square in the face. Ive also seen balls make there way under the neck guard as well but hasn't happened to me luckily. Honestly though stopping a deflection that is coming at pace is probably the most difficult kind of save you can make, positioning and posture are everything as often you have to react within 0.1 sec to stop the ball which is impossible. To me, it's always more attractive to charge the player when a long pass comes in like that as it's so much easier to stop a deflection but if the players catch on to this they can try and stop the ball and pass it which leaves the goal exposed but they need to complete the pass as well for this to happen. It's a tough debate to make both options have risks but I prefer the aggressive approach as it yields better results for me personally. But this video shows nicely a high paced deflection thats not coming directly to you is soooooo difficult to stop and is almost pure luck if you do

Got any tips for defending deflections from runners from short corners?

tom lovell Keep your stick low and close to where you think the ball would be, your more. Likely to stop the ball that way

Don't wave your stick at ball ,,,you were told in your fortitude training,,,,,also try train balancing your stick on your arms therefore you won't drop them
