Seems well constructed and great instructions. One thing I do dislike about stamp solutions on high priced devices is they're lack of reusability.
@CryptoGuide Жыл бұрын
The documentation is very good and very well done, and the build quality of the steel devices themselves was certainly excellent. Yea the lack of reusability is a major downside for this type of device. As far as reusable devices go, I think the CryptoSteel-Capsule is about as good as it gets, as it's very affordable, not fragile like the other cassette-style options and has the added bonus of being useful beyond BIP39 words.

Thank you for your comment. Considering the value of your assets, it is strongly advised to avoid backup solutions that can be easily disassembled. Hodlrs are also engineered with legacy in mind. This means that the individual who might eventually need to handle the backup should be shielded from making incorrect manipulations, even if they have limited knowledge about recovery phrase backup solutions.

This product isn't for me, but I still LOVE this video, because you end up inspiring me to really think about my own seed backups. Also, the magnet is a really nice touch, and the ability to add extra info on the underside is fantastic. Your videos are always best in class.

This is quite beautiful. But i went with the DIY version of stamping washers and putting them on a bolt. Now I'm looking for case or something.

Great review! What's your favourite metal stamp product?
@CryptoGuide Жыл бұрын
My main preference for stamped ones are options that don't require encoding, as I have done far too many recoveries for people who messed up the encoding step and didn't double check the final result. (Which is why I thought it was good that this product sticks with the letters themselves) For me personally, it's still hard to go past the very simple, low cost options like the Keystone Tablet Punch, as they are very affordable and can be paired with things like tamper evident bags, etc. (Which are cheap and easy to get) That said, there are a lot of folk who don't want to spend the time on this approach and are happy to go with a pre-packaged all-in-one option like the HODLR.

Another off topic theoretical question. Assume you have 24 seed words plus a passphrase. That will hash out to a specific derived private key. Is it theoretically possible that a different set of 24 seed words with no passphrase would also hash out to that same derived private key?
@CryptoGuide Жыл бұрын
Yes, in the context of hash functions, this is called a collision.

Totally off topic, love your content you're they guy to ask this: when looking at an address on the block chain, is it possible to determine if that addr is part of a multi sig setup (vs standard 24 word setup). Basically, could a person w a standard 24 word single signature setup have plausible deniability by claiming the address of interest is multi sig and they do not have all the keys, or would it be obvious by looking at the blockchain that it is not a multi sig addr? Would this answer be the same for btc, eth, xrp, XLM? Thanks for the great content!!!
@CryptoGuide Жыл бұрын
For native Segwit multisig types it is obvious that Multisig is in use, for Legacy and P2SH-Segwit it isn't, unless you have been reusing the addresses. That said, if someone has full access to your single signer then it is trivial for them to check commonly used single sig derivation paths. There is no consistency between chains, but smart contract based multisig like you find on Eth makes it obvious that it isn't a standard single sig address, the same is mostly true for XRP and XLM from what I have seen.

Excellent video, whats your view on 12 word seed is enough?
@CryptoGuide Жыл бұрын
The main issue with 12 word BIP39 seeds is that their checksum is really week, like 1/16 chance of still being valid if you swap any two words. The other issue is that people will do unsafe stuff like scrambling it and thinking it is secure, splitting it, etc. While you can get away with these practices with a 24 word seed, they are often not secure with 12... Entropy wise it's fine :)

Such a convoluted way of doing metal seed backup. And with two dud center punches too, what a waste.
@CryptoGuide Жыл бұрын
The complexity of the hardware they have made is certainly reflected in the price, but when you look at some of the fancy options on their store (black, gold plated, etc) it makes it pretty clear that this isn't primarily targeted at the mass market.
