Equestria at War is one of those mods that doesn't get a lot of attention because... well, it's My Little Pony. Not a lot of people want to admit to playing with that theme. But if you're willing to take the plunge, EaW is a surprisingly in-depth overhaul mod with a ton of content. In this series, we're going to play as the evil Changelings and try to rack up as big a pony body count as possible.

As one of the EaW Devs, thanks for taking the time to enjoy the mod. We put a lot of work into it, and even if you don't like ponies (many of our devs don't) we hope you can enjoy the magitek fantasy world we've created. Changelings are one of our older, more vanilla nations - plays very much like Germany - I'd recommend players check out our smaller nations too! Its when you step off the beaten path that you'll find the best parts of the game. Equestria at War is a very freeing mod for us to make because we can just make what we find cool or interesting, rather than being constrained by history. To give some examples - An ancap that can hire out troops as mercs. A nation with a secret illuminati path where Freemasons can take control of the nation. An undead nation that reduces state manpower to feed its armies. Unicorn mageocracy with court intrigue and roller skate derbies. A hidden 1984 Big Sister tree. A civil war between demigods of Sun and Moon whose sanity shall determine the path of their nations. An shattered HRE style Empire trying to pick up the pieces after the death of the Emperor. Even canonically MLP has pretty deep military/political history and lore about the three tribes and how they joined together, and all the different historical invaders and rulers and the heroes who fought them. It's surprisingly similar to Game of Thrones in many ways.

@KvAT In my experience with this mod (well over 200 hours) Grand battle plan is the worst doctrine especially for the Changeling/Equestrian war as you need to cover great distances really quick in order to execute encirclements or grab enough territory to make a difference.

You definetly want to stick with Mobile Warfare. Tanks are kind of the Changelings' thing. Dispersed is actually very powerful with the expanded research tree, as you can stack the 'Factory Bomb Vulnerability' bonus up to 100%. The attaché gets automatically recalled if you go the civil war route. You'd have had to straight-up crush the resistance to keep it. There is actually another Changeling nation, but they're very small and all the way over to the east. Changelings aren't dark ponies, really, but rather shapeshifting bugs. The Mussolini character, Beakolini is in fact a Griffon, in the Kingdom of Wingbardy. The Griffonian Empire doesn't really work like a CK2 rebellious duchies thing. Their early game revolves around bringing their vassal duchies back under their direct control. The reason the duchies are considered separate countries is a lore thing - the Empire bad become so weak that the duchies became practically autonomous, hence why most of them are autonomous vassals, but still nominally loyal to the Empire. A good number of the kingdoms in Griffonia, Aquileia to the west, for example, are former vassals of the Empire who became wholly independent.

The reason I use dispersed is because of the efficiency retention upgrades, and the base production upgrades. So switching or upgrading production isn't nearly as painful.

Wait... If this mod takes place AFTER the battle of Canterlot but before the rampage of Tirek yet post firearm development... Potentially a prequel to Fallout Equestria, can you develop balefire bombs? Can Equestria use the EoH as a superweapon? This mod seems awesome. If they factored in the solar legion, the thestrali and the sunset brigade this may be the greatest MLP conversion ever made. It takes place after the Season 9 finale chronologically (The School of Friendship is a thing, after all), but things are different because "To Where and Back Again" didn't happen (Chrysalis instead decided to prepare for a full invasion). You can develop "Magic-Nuclear Weapons", the game doesn't specify exactly what that means compared to real nuclear weapons (Although you can hire Fluttershy to speed up their research, so... make of that what you will).

My little pony's universe lore is actually so deep that it have it own history, nations, wars, deaths, apocalypse... (Though 80% of said lore is fan-fic.) With that said, vanilla MLP is girly, combine with all those bonuses out there, it can rival our own history.

Vanilla MLP can be girly, but isn't always. The Crystal War was pretty hardcore - though it might not count as "vanilla", even though it's canon (alternative timeline canon, but still canon).

The only reason the MLP:FiM show can be a kid's show is that it takes place in the most stable and "good" nation in the MLP Generation 4 universe. The places with conquering warlords, Zeppelin Pirates and anarchy where parts of sapient creatures and slaves are common trade goods don't get visited enough to bump up the show's age rating. And that is the best timeline out of a couple canon ones-- See the Crystal War timeline mentioned above. The fandom just takes what is briefly shown and implied and depicts it with all those things would imply themselves.

With your Endless Legend Broken Lords series, you had my (professional) curiosity. Now, you have my attention. Even to somebody familiar with the series, it's sometimes unexpectedly dark moments, and the length its fans go to in creating (sometimes very dark) content, the amount of effort that went into this mod is staggering. P.S. You skimmed over it, but from what I hear the nukes in this mod are more devastating than in the base game. So bring on those thermonuclear megaspells and nuke the diarchy to oblivion. Hail to the queen.

Just wanted to say that as the changelings you have a unique submarine type called the cruiser submarine which has a range of 7000 km, which can be useful for convoy raiding in the ocean between the continents during the war to cut off Equestria from much needed supplies.

In a lot of ways, EAW is a contender for the in-depth overhaul. Completely original map with a ridiculous number of unique focus trees (we're talking Kaiserreich here). I played it on a whim after seeing Conquering History Games play and jeez, it really was as fun as he made it seem. The techs are fun, and since most of the time you're staring at a friggin map anyways you don't really see the MLP aesthetic which, even I admit, I can't completely get over. Still, I've been burnt out on Kaiserreich (especially with the weird bugs in the current build), and I've found this to be an unexpected breath of fresh air.
