Don't worry! The rest of my girlfriend watches the MCU will be released as scheduled! This Wednesday and Saturday. We've had quite a few comments from people curious to show me movies for the first time, so we ran a poll on Patreon for them to vote what we would watch and Unbreakable was chosen. Not sure how often we'll do these videos, but leaving a like and commenting will let us know that you're interested in more. If you'd like some say in the future for videos like this, as well as early access to select videos, behind the scenes stuff, and more, check out my patreon: www.patreon.com/hthardman

People notice things that are out of the ordinary. You remember being sick because it stands out in your mind. You normally don't think about the times you're not. Regarding his strength, it was not without effort nor was it to a point of being incredible. As for invulnerability, other than the train crash and the earlier car crash, we don't know how much violence or injury inducing encounters he may have had. I mean, we still don't know if he's immune to bullets.

I see some of Holden's problems as character features. When Willis' character was young, he was living his destiny, but he gave it up for love. He has been holding himself back for decades. That's why he hasn't noticed his abilities, why his marriage is on the rocks, and why he is so colorless and despondent.

Of course, people will like what they like, but I think what makes this film so good is the realism depicted through the relationships of the characters, and that, in turn, grounds the fantasy/ science fiction aspect of it. I love everything about how the story unfolds. It never feels like it's trying to "make believe" with you. It's a story about people, the choices they make, the chain reactions of those choices, and then, surprise! there's also something remarkable happening--and something completely demented--all in the quest for purpose.

I think the timing of this movie makes it even better. This came out at a time when comic book movies weren't the biggest thing in the world and so the idea of one as a serious movie instead of a colorful cheesefest was crazy. It was also not marketed as a comic book movie so it took a while to even recognize it as such despite it now being so obvious. I don't think it's THAT unbelievable that he never got sick, it's probably not something you even really think about because why would you?

I watched this movie for the first time yesterday- the problem is, the entire plot is solvable in like 10 minutes. It's mostly an hour plus of Bruce Willis asking randos in his life if he's been sick and staring blankly without response when his wife speaks. If a man comes in after a train accident to an ED unconscious, he's getting pan-scanned with extensive blood work. I guess in this movie doctors are just like "oh I dunno, let him sleep and discharge" I then saw Split and wow is it a better movie than this
@KnowYourMarvelNews

I’ll say this movie is definitely one that always gets better for me on rewatch. From narrative and technical standpoints it just makes mire sense and gets more impressive to me. And Jen sort of touched on why he doesn’t know he has powers is his trauma with the water really lingered with him, one of the first things we hear him say is he’s scared of water, and in a world with no heroes while also having that trauma, assuming you have powers isn’t going to be a natural thought process

To add to the topic of exposition, M Night explained that they intentionally wanted to make the camera peek between objects in order to focus on the characters as if the audience is looking at comic book panels. Also, on the topic of colours, they made some characters' outfits have colours that pop so we can associate them with those colours, just as in comic books every superhero/villain has his/her own costume. The main character's colour is dark green, while Elijah's is purple. In Glass, the Beast's colour is orange, as was the one used for the criminal at the end.

I watched this for a Junior High film study course WAAAAY back when. I can't remember if it was something the teacher said in class, or if we watched some interviews and it was Shyamalan who said tm but this movie is really just supposed to be the Act One of a Superhero story.he discovers his powers and his arch villain, then Act Two and Three follow where the dramatic climax happens. So that's probably contributed to Holden's feeling that the ending was a bit lackluster - because it wasn't really an ending, just the end of the first act. As for him not noticing he's had superpowers, I chalk that up to the man having a pretty unremarkable life outside of his handfull of incidents that acted to keep him from realizing. Most heroes have a huge, powerful insighting incident. Dunn didn't have one up to that point. And every incident he did have got chalked up to the sorts of things we'd chalk it up to, luck, grace of God, etc... So until that train crash, he had no reason to believe or notice it.

we watched this film in the semiotics course, and like Jenn said, the colours are very important in the film. It isn’t until he starts BELIEVING in his power that it begins to manifest in far more obvious ways.

Hey, Holden! His ignorance of his durability is plausible for several reasons: -- he nearly drowned as a youngster because water is his kryptonite so he's always lived with that phobia -- we all know people who hardly ever get sick or who shake it off quickly when they do -- aside from the car wreck and the train, he's never been subjected to lethal physical duress and can consider his lack of injury mere flukes -- he's never pushed his weightlifting beyond a reasonable limit -- he's never been shot -- if you don't believe you're special, you won't seek to confirm otherwise

A really trippy thing about this movie is it sets up future movies that are supposed to have a long time span between, all the while the audience doesn't know about the link until the very end of Split and then Glass wraps it up relatively neatly if they decide not to make more. Or leave it open for more later on down the line.

The thing is, if you saw this during its theatrical release, especially on opening weekend, this movie was EVERYTHING comic book fans wanted and there were no real “comic book movies” at the time. For the people that saw this early, the revelation that we were watching a comic book origin story was huge. If Holden was old enough to see this during the theatrical run, I think he would be crazy about this film. Unbreakable was one of the films that open the floodgates for superhero films now. It was a game changer in fantasy narrative.

David's strength comes from his belief in himself, it didn''t click that he had this power until the train wreck, that led him to constantly question what he can do since he 100% should have died in that situation but wasn't even scratched. That was the tipping point. He wouldn't realise he's never sick, because he's never been sick so not being sick is his norm. So the more he believes in himself, the more he can do, theoritically his power level could be limitless. He's only weak to water because of his phobia, if he wasn't scared of water then it wouldn't be able to hurt him.

I think it can’t be understated how important it was to see this film before the boom of superhero movies taking over Hollywood. Because the fact that you don’t know you’re watching a superhero origin story until about halfway through the movie was part of the experience. Without knowing what this is going in, the movie feels like a very well done family drama for the first 45 minutes, interesting in its own right, but then there is this extremely intriguing thread of this man’s apparent invincibility. It all comes together at the end and both threads support each other. Watching a movie in this genre through the lens of a family drama/character study gives it a completely different feeling and set of rules. It’s not like when the MCU claims that Winter Soldier is a “political thriller” in the superhero genre. This film honestly lives in each of its given genres and excels at both. I think too many of Holden’s complaints are easily explainable by the lens you go into this movie with.

I like Unbreakable a lot. But the fact that it beat Seven is a travesty. Watch Seven, Holden. For fuck sake, watch Seven.

Yet to watch *Unbreakable* . I saw *Split* , which was fantastic. James McAvoy is brilliant. I went to see *Glass* at the theatre. It wasn't great, but I do think it was overly hated on.

Fight Club explains a lot about why David Dunn has no idea he's who he is. Getting punched in the face isn't a common thing as an adult. Lots of people go their whole lives without ever being in a fight. As for his other "powers", if you're over 35-40, what's your bench? I haven't tried to max out in years. I'm pretty sure I can't hit my HS/College 1RM, and I'll probably never even bother checking. David is a rather non confrontational person. Calm, quiet, goes along with the flow a bit. Doesn't seem like someone who really "pushes" himself.

8:58 I know I’m a year late but the best way to explain this in my opinion; David can lift as much as he believes his body can handle. He struggles because he’s never lifted that much before and in his mind it should be impossible and dangerous. But he realizes he’s stronger and starts to believe he can lift heavier. So he does. As far as his being able to lift heavier without noticing, in my mind it’s kinda like how a kid feels like they can’t ride a bike without a handle to hold them up. But once they’re let go of, they’re riding effortlessly without realizing Basically; David’s body but more importantly- his mind is unbreakable

This is fun. I hope this continues. I also enjoyed Holden doing a similar thing on Jeremy's channel. We all have movie blindspots and seeing the perspective flip was enjoyable.

It is my understanding that the text at the end was not part of the original theater release because they wanted to leave the cliffhanger for sequels, but when the movie didn't perform as hoped in theaters it was added for the home release to complete the story. I didn't see the movie in theaters so I don't have first hand knowledge, but I am fairly sure I watched an interview just before Glass was released that someone with the movie talked about adding that text in for the home release.

Holden says he doesn't buy that he wouldn't realise until his 40s with a family and all, but his would you know you were invulnerable until you're put in a situation that proves it without a doubt, like the train crash

The filming of this movie was actually designed to be like the cels in a comic book. A lot of the scenes have borders around the action by the use of walls, etc. and they also use the foreground to frame the action in the background (which you did pick up on).

When I saw this movie in the theaters, after the movie I was laying in bed, almost asleep, when I sat bolt upright because I figured out a hidden clue in the movie. As Mr. Glass was being wheeled out of the comic shop, he grabs the wheel and smashes the counters three times. After the third time he destroyed something in the shop, he found a comic he wanted and asked, "How much for this one?" He also caused three disasters, the plane, the hotel, and the train, and after the third time he destroyed something, he found what he wanted.

Is no one going to point out that when Willis is speaking with the mother in the last scene, Jackson is in the background with a bunch of patrons discussing the artwork of “NICK FURY: AGENT OF S.H.I.E.L.D.” And this was filmed and released BEFORE the Ultimates comics modelled Fury after Jackson!
