I have to recommend We Shall Be Free! It's a great song that angered some of my closed minded family because it was too progressive for them. (I don't talk to those people anymore.) This is a lyric video, not live, but I promise you it is the original recording: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y37IiImff8mmg5Y And here it is live and performed with Muppets: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3W0gYOVqqyCkKs

The song is about him crashing his old girlfriend’s wedding. She’s an average person just like him but she wanted to marry money. She ditched him for a wealthy man, and started looking down on her old life. So he crashed the wedding, walked up to the couple and freaked out the husband by taking the champagne right out of his hand to make his toast to the bride. He tells her he’s glad she’s left him and made her choice. He doesn’t want her if she doesn’t think he’s good enough. So he’s going to leave her in her perfect ivory tower where everything looks like it’s beautiful and perfect, and he’s going back to real life, real places and real friends.

It’s frustrating that Garth doesn’t let his videos be shown on KZbin. He’s so amazing in concert. I’ve been twice- it’s a party!! This video does not show that. In college, the little local bar we went to had a fun DJ & would play this to signify last call. The whole bar would be on the dance floor, singing this at the top of our lungs. 😁😁

From Wikipedia: Chris Gaines was a one-off fictional rock persona created as an alter ego for Garth Brooks to explore musical styles far removed from his success as a country singer. Initially, Brooks planned to feature the Gaines persona in The Lamb, a motion picture that never materialized.
@coreyrogers8700
@coreyrogers8700 3 жыл бұрын
Chris Gaines was weird but at the time you couldn't just go from country to pop, which is what he was trying to do. He had to create another stage name and look to try and break into the mainstream. Imagine if Taylor Swift had to create an entire new persona when she wanted to switch from country to pop. It's obviously easier now.
@rachelsullivan2926
@rachelsullivan2926 3 жыл бұрын
They really hung him out to dry on that one. He did all of the promo, including press tours as Chris Gaines, and even releasing an album under the name Chris Gaines just for the studio to decide they aren't going to release the movie where he plays Chris Gaines! In the end it made Garth look like he had broken with reality. It's one of the reasons he is so particular about copyright and what not.

Yes he wanted to before as George straight did, BUT his biggest idol for performances was an actual a bull riding and singer songwriter idol of his Chris Ledoux... Ledoux had a mechanical bull on his stage he would ride, also did a lot of running and jumping around the stage...

@@jolenejaynes-davis2129 Chris Ledoux is cool and all, but my point really was that If Garth Brooks has so much respect for George Strait, to come out and say that on television, then surely George must be the King of modern country music. As if 50 #1's on the country chart wasn't enough to back up that claim... Don't get me wrong, Garth is great too, I just think there really is no doubt that George Strait is in a league of his own. Besides that he has written probably a hundred or more hits for other's that you have to really look for to find.

What I was commenting on was that he got his concert style from Chris Ledoux, not George Straight... and I agree Garth believes George is King and always will be, he has I believe 53 #1 hits more then any other performer in ANY genre!!! That also goes beyond Elvis, The Beatles, etc...

Because you asked,, and I can't see in the comments where anyone answered you......An "Okie" is a person from Oklahoma. It's what people in California called (in a derogatory way) people who fled the dust bowl and the abject poverty caused by The Great Depression. My grandpa was an "Okie from Muskogee." He took his family to California he and granie picked grapes for farmers and my daddy and uncle, who were to little to work in the fields, chased birds away from the racks where the some of the grapes were dried into raisins. Now a days, people from Oklahoma own it and are proud to call themselves Okies. Hope that helps clarify. This is one of my all time favorite songs. I listened to this and George Strait's "Amarillo by Morning" while I hauled horses all over the country going to rodeo. This took my right back to my youth. Thanks!

Chris Gaines is an alter ego of Garth Brooks. There was supposed to be a movie called 'the life and times of Chris Gaines'. It's actually an excellent album.

The oasis is a local bar where all his friends are and where he’s accepted for who he is. Doesn’t have to wear a suit and tie or tux. Where she is in her Hoitie toitie ivory tower and will always have to behave in a specific way. He is in local bar drinking whiskey and beer. Still a song you hear playing on juke box in small country bars.

Him saying “I’ll be as high as that Ivory tower, that you’re living in” is actually a reference to getting high, I believe

Garth started his country music career because of George Strait, even Garth would tell you and has used the term "King George", watch the Garth Special Blame it on My Roots live from The Wynn Hotel in Vegas where he did a 5 year residency before making a comeback to his touring career.

The song is about a guy who crashes his exes wedding. He’s salty she left him for a rich dude. However you need to check out the live version with the famous 3rd verse!

Most folks think Chris Gaines was just Garth Brooks deciding to make an album and claim to be an Australian popstar named Chris Gaines. What actually happened was Garth was suppose to star in a movie about Chris Gaines. The soundtrack to the movie was released early and people lost their damn minds thinking Garth was going crazy. The press from the soundtrack was so bad that they canceled the movie and it was never released

I am thrilled that you are doing a Garth week and of course you have to react to his biggest hit of which he's had many. However, this video is from the beginning of his career and it got so much better. This song took on a life of it's own. First, this version doesn't include the third verse that he only performed at live shows (I'll let you find it for yourself). Search "garth brooks live in central park full concert" and you'll find a playlist that has Garth's performance of this song in 2014. Also, you can search for "justin timberlake and garth brooks live friends in low places" and you'll find the video and it's a lot of fun. I encourage you to check these out and maybe finish up the week with one of those videos. I'm excited to see the other songs you've picked for the week. So many great ones to choose from. The volume in both of these videos is good.

In the song, he shows up at his ex girlfriend's party. She never thought his friends were good enough. She never thought he was good enough. He toasts her and goes back to his 'good friends' because he doesn't need her crap.

Chris Gaines is a character Garth was supposed to play in a movie. He released an album of songs by the character and pretended to be that guy in real life, even appearing on SNL in character, but then the movie never happened so it ended up seeming like just a weird alter ego. The music actually isn't that bad though as long as you don't go in expecting Garth. It's more like typical '90s pop/soft rock.

It's cool seeing an early version of the song, the only bummer is you miss the "Mysterious Third Verse"! May want to react to a version of that as well at some time. Or at least listen to it. Especially after some have explained a bit about the song. Hearing it again, and with that 3rd verse, could be a lot of fun!

Okay. Garth was tapped to play an Australian pop star named Chris Gaines. He released a greatest hits of Chris Gaines album as a soundtrack before the movie. The thinking was that people would be familiar with the music. But the movie fell through. And Garth got the crap kicked out of him over it....
