Im so disappointed with this lacking news story. Who caused the explosion? Why did they do this? If it was legal why were they being negligent to the people around them? Where the people who did this charged and prosecuted with a crime for this? They really should considering, all of the avoidable damage and displacement caused.

Pretty disappointing. “The house exploded”. No it didn’t. The house was intentionally destroyed by the city and in the process they destroyed other homes. Yellow journalism at its best.

This is a continuation of another story. The house that exploded was supposed to be a controlled demolition. Crystalized dynamite was discovered in the basement, and it was extremely unstable, and unable to be moved. The house was a ticking time bomb, so they had to evacuate the neighborhood and ignite the dynamite. It's an unfortunate situation. The renters and the land lord may be able to go after the original homeowner of the house that exploded, but I believe it was discovered because the previous owner passed away, so it's honestly just a loss. The city can't be held liable because they did the only thing they could do, and the person who's at fault is no longer around to be held liable.

This is 100% a lawsuit. A BIP (blow in place) is *NOT* the proper way to handle that! You deal with deteriorated dynamite by soaking it in diesel fuel for several hours to desensitize it, and then move it to a safe location for a controlled burn.

The explosives were found in the blown up house but the family with the disabled son are renters in a house south of the blown up house. So the renters are now displaced with 3 children and one who is disabled. The mom also was scheduled to have brain surgery for a tumor that same week but had to cancel it due to not having a home safe to live in anymore. Also they lost refrigerated medication... seems like the explosion team could have figured out a better way with less damage to those not even involved with the ppl who kept dynamite for years in their home!

Based off of what happened, these people definitely have a legal case that they can pursue against the local or state government in reference to wrongful taking/destruction of property via eminent domain without proper compensation. Sounds to me like they need to lawyer up.

For the house with the dynamite, maybe. But that demo needed to be done differently, the blast should have been better contained in a way that wouldn't impact the other homes like it did.

Eminent domain has only been successfully argued once in cases like this, Baker v. City of McKinney, Texas, and it was overturned by the 5th Circuit in February 2024. I agree that the city needs to pony up for the renter and home owner, but the city is standing on pretty solid case law.

The house was full of crystalized and highly unstable tnt because the deceased man was a chemist and didn’t know better. TNT is normally stable and would need some form of blasting cap to detonate. However as TNT gets older, it dries out and crystallizes. When TNT crystallizes, it becomes HIGHLY unstable. What was once something needing its own detonation to start has now become something that can detonate at the single touch. One slight mishandle, wrong touch, drop, exposure to even the slightest bit of heat or static charge can set off an uncontrolled catastrophic detonation. Moving crystallized TNT was biggest mistake they could have made as it would have posed greater danger to the crew, surroundings, and potential bystanders. This method was the only way to dispose of the highly explosive material in a controlled manner. In this method, the detonation was controlled to minimize damage. Had it been uncontrolled, no telling how much damage and/or lives were endangered. Also, the fact that authorities caught and dealt with the situation before it did uncontrollably detonate is a miracle in itself. That home was literally a ticking time bomb and was just a moment away from killing some one had the authorities not stepped into it and evacuated the neighborhood. That fact that the neighboring house is still standing is a testament to how good they controlled the detonation. Had it been uncontrolled, I doubt the neighboring houses would be still standing.

@@TheAwesomeTruthofTThow long had the tnt been sitting there …? I assume quite some time, meaning it had been through many different conditions and weathering over this period. I think they could have panned this out quite a bit more rather than rushing to detonate. Clearly the controlled detonation didn’t exactly prevent any serious damage anyways. I’m not sure the steps they take for a controlled explosion but it seems the situation wouldn’t have looked much different if it naturally occurred or they forced the explosion.

Sue them for what, protecting lives? You can't safely move crystallized Dynamite, and to make things worse, it was in the middle of the community. First responders did what was necessary to protect lives, even if it cost a home. Crystallized Dynamite is extremely sensitive to vibration and it may not have gone off for 20 or 40 years, but that doesn't mean it won't go off 10 seconds from now. When discovered it should be taken care of ASAP. Insurance will just have to figure it out.

It wasn't a government mistake, it was old dynamite.. If anyone's at fault it's whoever put Dynamite in a home. When Dynamite gets old it starts to have nitroglycerin crystallize on the outside of the casing. This makes it extremely unstable! Seriously, a fly could set off crystallized Dynamite.

I know Americans absolutely hate context, but here's some context as to why the situation went down the way it did... The house had old crystallizing dynamite in it. When Dynamite gets old, it will sometimes have nitroglycerin crystallize on the outside of the casing. This is so unstable that something as little as a fly could set it off. There's no way to safely move it. If anyone's at fault, it's NOT the first responders, they handled it in as controlled and confined environment as possible. Fault lies on the homeowners of the detonated house, or whoever stored dynamite in there. Being that it's very difficult to get Dynamite these days, I'm assuming whoever bought the dynamite is long past.

@@Emzlv702 you don't think that a concussive blast that was strong enough to lift a roof and rip kitchen cabinets off the frame isn't strong enough to also turn your insides into jelly? You know when a bomb goes off its not just the explosion and shrapnel you need to worry about, the concussive force from the explosion can also turn you into a vegetable. My guess is they left them behind because they were probably told it's a controlled blast and it won't be that bad. Snakes aren't exactly easy pets to just pick up and relocate and no, they don't necessarily need to give them anything more than a 24hr notice because again, they were under the impression this blast would be much smaller and probably wouldn't be a big deal. The people were told to evacuate during the explosion. They were not told they would not be able to return afterwards.Their houses were uninhabitable when they came back. The city and fire department knew there was volatile material in the house they blew up. They did not take the surrounding homes into consideration. They did not consider the families in the surrounding homes being displaced. They should have. Either that, or they figured a case would take a minute, so it's whatever. Now they're going to end up paying for all the damage they caused to those homes and all the personal property those people lost, plus more.
