This Film Courage video is a culmination of dozens of interviews we have done over the past 5+ years with Hollywood actors. It covers the craft, strategy, mindset, business principles, and the ups and downs that all actors face. It's filled with clues to their success.
This video features Aaron Eckhart, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Katey Sagal, James Franco, Kevin Bacon, Michelle Monaghan, Aaron Paul, Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke, Cynthia Nixon, Miles Teller, Tobey Maguire, Jim Gaffigan, Mandy Moore, LaKeith Stanfield, Clive Owen, Alexander Skarsgård, Omari Hardwick and a whole lot more.
We've made this video for actors but we can see it benefiting all creatives. It was fun for us to put together and we hope you get a lot out of it.
It's broken down into 3 Chapters.
00:05 - Mindset
52:30 - Craft
1:37:18 - Stories

Stuff we use:
CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse - amzn.to/2u66V1J
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

FlorasHormones I understand. The support of friends and family can be so important. But an unshakable belief in yourself is even more important. I understand how much those around you can have a positive or negative influence on your self confidence. But just try to think of it like the temporary rejection that even the best of actors get when they read for role and don’t get the part. Set your acting goals. Make a commitment to achieving them. Then take action to pursue your goals. First you must picture yourself in your mind acting and getting paid. Visualize how those around you will react. Feel the pride you will feel and the respect you will get. Do this every morning and night. You can literally manifest your own success. But you must also take action and “Show up“ for casting calls. Think only about what you want to achieve. Avoid thinking about the past or anything negative, such as the negative opinions of others. Do this, and you will be a success. Quantum physics how proven that we CAN manifest the destiny we want. Now go “Break a leg”! (They say this instead Good luck in the acting profession).

Unfortunately it says "security" at the bottom and I'm not wearing a tux on the pass photo. I looked like a dork in my security uniform. Oh yeah, and I got to walk across the red carpet. That was pretty fucking cool. But every thing else about it sucked big fat donkey dicks.

One of my friends has been in Hollywood pursuing acting since his early 20s; Today, he is in his 30s, living out of his van, and working for a company that builds retail spaces shelving and countertops. Hollywood, it's a tough business to break into if one doesn't make the right connections and being at the right place at the right time. Very entrepreneurial-type business.

I guess, I get how people get discouraged and down after getting rejection after rejection but for me it's like this: all the other doors closed. Except this one. Everything fell into place and got me to where I could practice my craft. It's part of my journey to grow and build and learn everything I can to become the person I was put into this world to be--- and even if I get rejected, or if I quit, I'll still be going back to the minimum wage or boring office job in the end to try to make ends meet. I'd rather practice my craft and hustle while I struggle. At least then I'm still doing what I'm meant to do and not walking away from Destiny.

For actors, perhaps a helpful metaphor might be to think of a “no” or a “rejection” as merely a “positive ion”-the number of which happens to occur as more prevalent at intersections and stop signs within a city. Think of a “yes” as merely a “negative ion”-which might happen to occur less frequently spaced (yet more lengthened) within a city as a freeway.

I don’t care if acting isn’t stable, I enjoy the craft. So many people tell me that I have to have “several streams of income”, and if I love doing several things and am blessed with those things being monetized, then blessed be to God. I despise this idea that it seems like you HAVE to be this entrepreneur type person to be successful in life. Do what you want to do, and do it because it makes you happy, not because of money or fame, do it because it speaks to you. Whatever you love doing, keep doing it and lean on God. Everything will work out 💪🏾

This is known as Emotionalized Visualization...Do this every morning and night, see it and feel the feelings that come with success.

Also I was a theatre Major in college and I learned more on set and on stage outside of college just by actually doing it. So college is good but you do not need college. I repeat you DO NOT NEED IT. Many have done it without a formal education. But theatre is a good training ground before getting into movies or Broadway . Do local and regional Theatre. Get on that stage first before doing movies. Learn where the art all started. There was a stage before there were movies.

I do think I am talented. But i’m not going to lie, the sound of all this competition is intimidating. And for me in the Miami area, I don’t know if it’s a big hot spot for film acting. I’ve wanted to act since i was a little kid, and that is still going for me. I pray that it will workout for me and for all of you great people as well🙏🙏

18 and since 16 I've known I've wanted to be an actor cause in theory I could be whatever i want. It's the fact that i love living in Iowa and connections I've made here that I don't want to move to LA. I just know if I tried I could be big.
@liquidbraino
@liquidbraino 4 жыл бұрын
You don't need to move to LA to be an actor. You can start now. I'm sure there's teachers in your area and most cities have a local theater. You could be performing NOW and maybe in a few years decide whether or not you want to move to LA. If you feel that acting is your passion then go for it. James Franco once said that if you really want to be good at something then why NOT work as hard as you can at it? You already have an advantage because you're starting early. Being an actor is in some ways a lot like gambling, you can play the game of chance and hope it just "works out" or you can play the game which requires skill and have a solid plan. As they say "if you've failed to plan, you've planned to fail". Have a plan; follow through on that plan. Make a list of individual goals and knock them out one at a time. You'll get there.

@@hassanmohamud3096 If you plan to have any longevity in your career then why would you just play at it? I mean if you want to be successful then you need to be good at what you do regardless of *what* you do and if you really want to get good at something why *wouldn't* you work as hard as you possibly can at it? I've noticed that younger generations are always looking for the cheat codes or some shortcut but there is no shortcut to success. It's not a sprint, it's a marathon so you have to think like a marathon runner. You can't just sit on your couch for twelve months eating Doritos and Burritos then suddenly show up on race day expecting to win against ten million other runners who spent the whole year pushing themselves to their limits. Especially in such a competitive market as TV/Film, there are ten million actors registered on IMDb and only about 5,000 are famous. I'm not real good at math but that's roughly 0.003%. That 0.003% is the percentage that was committed enough to work hard at achieving their goals *and* had realistic expectations. Act because you love the craft of acting - not because you're obsessed with fame but too lazy to work for it. I'm not trying to be rude, just brutally honest. You'll make yourself miserable that way but if you fall in love with the *craft* of acting you can pay your bills by doing what you love more than anything in the world. Isn't that enough? BTW: The best place to fall in love with the craft of acting is in an acting class. That's also the best place to begin building your network and self worth as an actor. Second best place to fall in love with acting is on stage. There's no better teacher than a live audience and you never know who might be sitting in that audience. The thing is if you're inexperienced nobody is going to hire you for anything interesting. And if you have nothing on your resume nobody is going to want to cast you when there's ten million other actors to choose from. It's kind of a "Catch 22", you can't get good work if you haven't already done good work. So HOW do you get something for your resume when you have nothing on your resume?? You take acting classes. And the honest to god truth is that I started acting before I took classes and now I regret it. A *good* acting class isn't going to be easy - it WILL be painful at times but acting classes will teach you humility and that's very important in an industry that's full of narcissists. I wish I had trained for at least two years before I even tried to be a professional working actor. I look back on everything I did before I started training and it's all shit but I couldn't see that back then; I didn't have the humility. I want to get rid of it all and start over but all I can do is move forward from where I'm at right now. Can't go back in time; I can't un-film "Batman Returns"; can't remove my name from the credits. Pain is temporary; film is forever. The best piece of advice I can give is this: Never let the word "can't" seep into your vocabulary. That which hinders your task IS your task. And don't let the word "try" ever seep into your vocabulary. Do it or don't do it. Don't make excuses; make a commitment and DECIDE "I am an actor". That's really the level of commitment that it takes - so that you'd never stop acting EVEN IF you knew you'd never become famous. If you can't even commit to something as simple as taking a class then you should focus your efforts and energy on something that you *are* passionate about enough to work hard for it. The second best advice I can give: Don't join SAG/AFTRA until you get the second letter & don't touch IMDb at all. When you've got something that's worth adding to your IMDb page it will happen automatically. Let that happen automatically - THEN sign up on IMDB-Pro but *only* to add your headshots. And third: don't seek out an agent. Let the agent find you and research the agency well before you sign anything. Take a whole day to read over the contract before you sign it and if they try to rush you - rip that contract up and walk out. I'm dead serious... a lot of this (above) may seem trivial but you'll thank me later. I turned down three different agencies before I finally signed with my current agent. And you *don't need* an agent if you're just starting out. Take classes; get headshots; sign up on Actors Access, Casting Networks, Casting Frontier and start submitting; going on auditions; going through rejection after rejection after rejection until you have such a thick skin that it doesn't even phase you anymore. You have to get through the 80% of rejection in order to get to the 20% that's going to pay off. And when the quality of your work speaks for itself *they* (talent agencies) will come looking for YOU -- but so will the scam agencies and there are more scam agencies than real agencies so don't be in a huge rush to get signed. Don't be a typical thirsty (new) actor who's desperate to get famous overnight because it makes you an easy target for scammers. If you find yourself standing in Hollywood, ignore all the fliers on telephone poles and bus stops promising to make you famous if you just hand over $600. They are ALL scams. The thing with SAG (the union, Screen Actors Guild) is that if you have very little experience nobody wants to pay SAG wages to hire you. *You* cost more money for them to hire if you're in the union so you want to wait until you get the "must join" letter. Before that you'll get a "can join" letter - don't do it; wait for the second letter. I have friends who joined SAG too soon and 100% of the time they end up going back home with shattered dreams when all of a sudden nobody will hire them. I've seen it happen a million times, everyone thinks you're not a real actor until you have IMDb credits and your SAG card. They love showing off that card to their friends like "look at me, I'm a *real* actor" but a real actor is a working actor; not somebody who has a faded SAG card which expired ten years ago as they stand behind the register at a Walmart in Wisconsin.

#1: Luck. Pure luck. Being spotted by the right casting director at the right time. There are so many bad actors out there, they didn't get there on talent or work. Luck is the most important factor. If you're persistent, you may, or may not, luck out.
