Wallace Reid first came to my attention in a chapter that was in Kenneth Anger's book "Hollywood Babylon". It was a somewhat sensationalized version of real events that took place in Hollywood (and it was often embellished with half-truths). Another star who is unfortunately more remembered more for his gruesome death than for his great career was Ramón Novarro.

Same here, rightly or wrongly Kenneth Anger has a lot to answer for. However, I am so glad I delved into Hollywood Babylon.

Its really sad how, Wally died at such a young age, leaving his wife and children. He suffered so much from his addictions. It must of tore him up, inside and out. Wish they had better resourses for treatment back then. Its Sad. RIP Wallace Ried.😌🙏🎦🎬

There needs to be someone assigned to each star that is a guardian that makes sure they are physically and mentally healthy. Like an advocate/therapist-counselor, where if they want stardom, they have to maintain their health and wellness, maybe ? Instead of just leaving them to their own demons and devices. Its really sad what happens to them. These "handlers" dont care for some reason. You'd think that they would take better care of someone that is paying their bills ?

With this documentary I feel that the main goal is to rehabilitate Wallace Reid as the great artist that he was on so many different levels and that it’s so very unfair that his legacy seems to be that he was a famous Morphine addict and the cause of a great Hollywood scandal. In my opinion he certainly didn’t deserve to be remembered only because of his fatal drugs addiction, an addiction that was caused by the terrible exploitation (and medical mistreatment of him after an accident while he was working on the film The Valley of the Giants in 1919) of the studio he worked for FPL later Paramount. Why this rehabilition needs to be at the expense of Rudolph Valentino is beyond me though. Rudolph Valentino was not an androgynous man, not a man with features that are feminine. He was the perfect male in his face, features and body. He was a great athlete and a great actor. Because of abject male jealousy in the USA he was described as effeminate, because he played an Arabian Chieftain (a Sheikh)where he wore perfect Arabian costumes worn by real Sheikhs, a Spanish torreador, and he played an Indian Rajah, where he wore elaborate costumes exactly like real Indian Rajahs with lots of jewelry etc. No woman would see anything effeminate in him, which was the reason he was so very much adored. He was sexy, very sympathetic, very masculine, raw, in control and he had a kind of a mystery about him, which is the reason why he is still remembered today and makes new fans still today. His acting is really sublime. He could say everything with his eyes, face, his hands and his body, even the most subtle emotions. I’ve seen the film The Affairs of Anatol and yes, Wally was a good actor, but not an actor who would send shivers down my spine, like Rudolph Valentino. Wally is very handsome, but not erotic or sexy. That was the trouble of all of Rudolph’s American contemporary stars. They just couldn’t match the enormous mesmerising, hypnotic and attractive qualities of Rudolph Valentino. He has never been replaced by any other heartthrob and it’s not at all difficult to understand why. The way Rudy was discriminated in his own time by the studio’s and the male press because he wasn’t a fair haired, white skinned all American boy, is still horrible to learn about. The assault on his sexual identity that started in the 1960’s just to make money by writing utter nonsense is unfortunately another chapter in the attempts to devalue him as the great lover and the greatest male sex symbol ever. To portray him now as androgynous is also sad and doesn’t serve the memory of Wallace Reid in any way.

Have you ever considered doing audiobooks on Audible, KZbin or some other platform where there are no ads? I'm just getting into audio books and I'm extremely sensitive to certain voices. Imho I don't think everyone has the right voice for audiobooks. So far I've only found two and you are one of them, the other is a youtuber named Mad Morph and Down to Sleep is his channel. If the two of you ever collaborated on a book, that would be incredible! Thanks for your time and for sharing your gift! Have a _very_ happy and prosperous future!

Isn't it interesting how some people can limit their intake of alcohol and drugs but others have no control over it? I've watched 3 people drink themselves to death and before they expired they had every kind of warning to stop but they kept going. Their ages were 34, 53 and 65. I was surprised when one of them made it to 65 and shocked when one of them _didnt_ make it to 35. It's sad to watch them age prematurely and develop multiple life threatening health issues. Check your family history as it pertains to addictive behaviors and be very selective of who you have children with.

Are any of his films preserved and intact?
@HollywoodMysteries8 ай бұрын
Most are lost, including nearly all of his shorts. But there are some notable films still available, like 'The Valley of the Giants.' The only surviving reel of this was loaned to Russia before the revolution, and was presumed lost for the entire Soviet era, before being returned in full to the U.S. in 2010. Birth of a Nation, The Dancin' Fool and The Love Special are also still preserved and available.
