The audience shots were actual people who stood in lines outside the Vine Street theater.. they knew they had to dress up. Otherwise. - they couldn’t be on camera..! Theatre had a balcony - where the audience had to sit..! Every show had a full house. Tickets were distributed at the show’s box office was located..or were mail-in requests.. show tickets were “hot” to get-!

Judy looked great in that black sequined suit. And I loved her upswept hair here. My Mother had that classic hairstyle. I used to love staring and smiling at my Mother when she looked this gorgeous. The By Myself number was so divine. God Bless You Hollywood Palace for showing these showcase gems of TV past. It brings back such joyous memories of my youth. I'm crying with delight after viewing classic Judy...the woman with a wonderful lilting laugh and a killer dance step when she sang. Those gams went on forever, didn't they? Lol. My Mom copied her dance steps too and would dance while cooking in her kitchen listening to Judy. She do that cute little shuffle 2 quick step while wearing her beatnik black tights and oversized black sweater. God Bless Judy. So many women copied and adored her.

Having had less than perfect vocal chords to do gigs, JUDY kicked ass on those arrangements. I know exactly how she felt. It's really tough to perform like that....you could hear it a little but for the most part she killed! KUDO'S Judy! .........TOTAL PRO.

Judy Garland does not appear drunk here. Judy talked the same way she sang and had an enormous sense of humor. Anybody who knew her will tell you the same thing. Sometimes, Judy's voice was not always at its best, but she sounded fine here. At the very worst, Judy might have blown a word from one of the que cards, in fact the audience seemed to react to it, but Judy recovered seemlessly. Judy Garland was a long time living legion by then, and The Hollywood Palace was filmed live. Can you imagine how terrifying it was to do live television? What a beautiful introduction and entrance they gave her! That was an awefully I long way from little Frances Gumm and her sisters in vaudeville.

I agree and by this time her voice was over worked, and people don't understand, and it bothers me when they say she was high or drunk, her doctors were giving her medication so she could work, give her energy to keep up with the pace, medication to sleep, and Ritalin for mood swings, the Ritalin caused the slur speech not alcohol
@joeyjosephs

Also, about her voice to clear this up, was like this from a pill , Judy's voice was damaged in Hong Kong, when she took too many sleeping pills and her stomach had to be pumped, she died and they revived her, he vocal cords were damaged, and she was told by the doctors not to sing for one year, and she didn't listen, this was right after the Judy garland show ended in 1964. Had she waited her voice may have come back full, but she needed to work and she went on singing, and over worked her voice at times

Judy Garland would stand head and shoulders above any half-naked, twerking nitwit of today; what passes for talent currently is an abomination and evidence of a culture in severe and likely terminal decline. At least wonderful shows such as these remind some of us of a time when our society had standards and class. I am grateful for them. Thank you, Hollywood Palace! It's incredible isn't it, how many people tend to jump to the conclusion that Garland is either drunk or 'high'? What is that about I wonder? I have a theory and that is there are some people who cannot tolerate their own vulnerabilities, are afraid of accepting their fallibilities. Garland was vulnerable, fallible and struggled emotionally. She depended on medication to function which, over time, wrecked her physically. There was no help out there for her, no rehab, no opportunity to recuperate to recover from her addiction. Therefore, to make snap negative judgements about her lifestyle or demeanour is, quite frankly, pathetic. This indicates to me a lack of empathy for others, an almost psychopathic disdain for the human condition. Garland did her damn best to function in spite of her struggles and managed (latterly literally singing for her supper) to perform for the entertainment of others. It really grates with me that there are some people who watch her performances on this platform and toss out inane comments about her. Of course, it really shouldn't matter because those comments are worthless and bordering on lunatic. But it reminds me of a saying, "..throwing pearls to swine" - meaning Garland's incredible catalogue of performances are gems far too precious for some people viewing them.

Preach!! Agreed. She seems a little shaky in places but here's a revolutionary idea... how about entertaining the possibility she was a little bit nervous? Being a legend and loved by the entire world doesn't magic away performance jitters and Judy Garland got nervous too just like anyone else. So sick of people yelling 'DRUUUUNK' or drugs every time she does something that's slightly imperfect - she's human! She's not a robot for god's sake nobody can be flawless 100% of the time. I wish people just let the woman get on with doing her job - which she does better and with more heart and grace and style than anyone else in the world.

I don't think she was drunk; if she had been, they wouldn't have let her do the show. If anything, I suspect it was whatever medications she was taking that were affecting her. Judy was blacklisted from ever hosting any major show after this one because she destroyed her dressing room after the taping; she was going through a divorce with Mark Herron, was a in terrible financial situation, with $12.000 in assets and about $500.000 in debt and her contract with Capitol Records was not renewed after a decade. She also had slept in her trailer and appeared during rehearsal with her street clothes, disheveled and half-asleep. Although she looks great, she was under the influence of something, which is sad to see.

Although clearly fading, and only a few years away from losing her battle, Judy still doesn't look too bad here. Actually, the impression I got from listening to her speak is that she's fighting loose dentures. I've spoken to people who have either recently had false teeth installed or whose teeth need adjustment, and they find themselves slurring and lisping quite a bit. Of course Judy's demons were well know so the other options might well be true, but I'm taking my cue from her eyes which seem bright here, not like some other recordings I've seen where she's in worse shape.

To be fair, while Judy looks lovely and healthy, her voice and demeanor lead me to believe she was somewhat impaired. It was as likely she was affected by something out of a pill bottle than a booze bottle...or at least not by booze alone. Even the "slurry" and also lisp-quality, huskiness in her speaking voice and lower singing register was something she developed inexplicably later in life -- but it would become greatly exaggerated when high. Remember, this was filmed only three years before her drastic crash and burn leading to her death. Such a tragic loss and waste of talent at only age 47. On the other hand, it's a real kick seeing Johnny Rivers. Why, oh why, is he STILL not inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

You don't have to be drunk to sound like that, I've seen enough former heavy drinkers and drugs addicts to know. Her speech was slurred from years of drugs and heavy drinking. After decades of taking lots of different medications with alcohol, it doesn't damage just the liver, heart and other organs. It damages and affects the brain resulting in slurred and or impaired speech. Combined or single useage of either in excess over a 25 year span will start take obviously and painfully start to show the ravages of what it's clearly doing here and by the time this was made, that's about how long she had been on pills and drinking. Though the pills were not her fault, they were the fault of MGM. They had all the child actors on different medications to keep them peppy, then sleep, and two strong for weight loss and sleep. Eventually she got addicted and it got out of control and when you take strong medicine, you become confused and can't remember things, so you forget when and if you took your medicine, so you take more damaging your body. And mixing with with booze only makes it far worse. As so many people that knew her said, she was living on borrowed time and even though this was 3 years before her death, she was seriously ill and that is why you think she is drunk when she's not, it's really quite sad indeed.

TEDDINGTON TELEVISION How is it that Judy Garland fans are so absolutely convinced that they have a supernatural ability to differentiate when Judy was drunk and/or high from other potential causes? In any event, the cause here is still years of substance abuse, as you noted. I don't see how you can possibly tell the difference between the aftereffects of years of substance abuse versus being actively inebriated, but if you can, you have a true gift. Catte Adams, where you got the idea that Judy never performed while not sober, I cannot possibly imagine.

What the World Needs Now is a horrible fit for her voice. Not every voice can handle every style. Imagine Tony Bennett singing Let it Be or I Can't Get No Satisfaction... Horrible. Likewise here. And then they had to go and warp the song to let her finish it in belting Garland style, which turned an already highly unfortunate performance into truly cringe-making farce.
