Mongolians are not the only ones who do throat singing though. Tuvans, Yakuts etc. also have their styles of throat singing. I would recommend you to check out an old Tuvan band named Yat-Kha. As far as i know they were the first ones to really blend these kind of singing with rock/metal sounds.

But at the end of the day ... what this guy is doing is not an "effect". While I can't imagine the training and skill it takes to do this in a way that makes me want to start sharpening axes - he's doing it. On some of their other songs, you can actually hear it much easier.

Mongolian guttural music singer Guttural singing, or also known as diphonic singing, is believed to be over 4000 years old and will have its origin in the area surrounding the present-day Republic of Tuva and southwestern Mongolia, this type of singing allows the human voice to perform up to three types of independent sounds, resulting from a refined technique that mixes various mechanisms of movement of the abdomen, throat, nasal cavity, lips and tongue.

So here’s a crazy fact- they sound BETTER live. Saw them in Boston last year and both my son and I left in awe. Worked concert security for 2 years and saw a lot of great shows... they bested them all. Metallica, Elton John, and Iron Maiden shift down to honorable mention status now (although when I get to see Nightwish my guess is this changes again). All 4 lead men can Mongolian throat sing and each has a different tone. 2 drummers, who they rarely show, also fill the band with the percussion drummer and their main lead singer (not the bigger hosehead fiddle player who drives this song) playing multiple instruments including another unique cultural instrument; the mouth harp. The Gereg is an amazing record/work of art. Trust me - continue to journey with this band...

@ Not really. During Stalin's total reign he killed between 30 and 40 million people. Hitler killed, just in his own lands now, about 11 million (5 million or so holocaust victims and 6 million or so of JUST German troops). That puts you at 41 or 51 million. Khan is estimated to have killed about 40 million people or so with his conquering. None of them hold a candle to Mao though. Also I don't know where you got that I idolize him. Still the numbers will always be hard to quantify and in any case yeah Mao takes the absolute cake in terms of numbers.

@@CorvusCorone68 um no while Persian and Mongolian does have similar roots the language of even old Mongolia doesn't come from Russia but rather influenced by the same root. One has to remember that while that scholars today mostly believe that the altaic languages homeland should be somewhere in the central Asian steppe. But a lot of this is conjecture and it could be that the north influenced the steppe.

It is pronounced "who" and you are right, it is a battle chant, its all about bring everything you got and not only will we meet you in battle, we will win. The instruments were traditional Mongolian instruments and the singing is real, its Traditional Mongolian Throat Singing. The reason you kept feeling a Native American vibe is the fact that the two cultures are cousins. Same ancestors, ancient historically speaking, you should check out the lyrics, its so similar to Northern Tribes here in The Americas. I'm from a North-Eastern tribe, where many of us still have that Mongolian look to this day. My ex looks like the singer's brother. LOL I was even born with a birth mark (that disappears after infancy) called "The Mongolian Spot".... LOL

Tuvan throat singing is one of my favorite styles. Absolutely beautiful and engages your voice to do things you never thought you could. Ladies, if you’re having a hard time with gutterals, vocal fry, dual tones and certain notes, please try to train yourself in throat singing, it’ll engage you to get out of head voice. It’ll take time but it’s so rewarding once you are able to do it.
