I was born in 1962. This is my favorite group. My generation had never heard anything like this group and I was astounded to hear a sound like this. Now remember back then you only heard it on the radio so you had to listen for hours in hopes that you would hear your favorite songs. I remember changing the radio channels in hopes that I would hear this incredible group. Can you imagine finally catching it but at the very end just as your channel was ending it, just crying and waiting and hoping for hours to hear it again!!! We only had four channels on the radio. Country, 2 pop and one r and b which went off at 6pm. Everyone tells me that I should do a you tube channel on all the 70's music groups and how times were then. I am so excited to see your generation discover them. Back in the days when candy was 2 for a penny, concerts were 5 dollars a ticket ( Im talking the jackson 5, prince, rick james etc), a bag of chips and soda were a quarter, a brand new car was less than $3,000. The sun shined brighter and love was more innocent. One gift I was blessed with is the ability to take a song and be able to put you in a place where you feel like you were there at that time,.

@@kev7161 Being, "a highly successful band with a ton of hits" is not a valid counter-argument to the statement, "his vocals are so underrated". From my perspective, ELO were well known for their catchy songs and novel approach with the inclusion of string instruments. But I don't recall anyone ever citing Jeff Lynne as being one of the great or even very good vocalists when the subject of "best singers" comes up. So based upon this, I don't think Frank Bianco's statement was necessarily unwarranted. But I might be open to a different counter-argument, if you have one.

Groups like ELO, Chicago, Supertramp etc were referred to back in the day as supergroups because they were all comprised entirely of very accomplished musicians who were always trying to one-up each other. They put the classic in classic rock!
@michaelmcgowen87802 жыл бұрын
No, you are mistaken. A supergroup is a musical group whose members are successful as solo artists or as members of other successful groups, such as Blind Faith; Beck, Bogert & Appice; Bad Company; Asia, The Firm, The Highwaymen; Bad English; Traveling Wilburys; Damn Yankees; and Chickenfoot.
@Hexon662 жыл бұрын
@@michaelmcgowen8780 I think you're being a bit generous with the term as well. Wilburys, Highwaymen, maybe Blind Faith. But even then with BF, it's too contemporaneous with their other projects. There has to be a distance of time to build legendary status. And if we're being honest, the greatest supergroups ought to be considered The Funk Brothers, Wrecking Crew and the A Team.
@michaelmcgowen87802 жыл бұрын
@@Hexon66 I used the definition of the term as I've seen it used by music critics and the music press over the last 50 years. What is applicable is where the members of these groups were in a previous group, or were solo artists, that had popular or commercial success. With Beck, Bogert & Appice, for example, Jeff Beck was known for his time with The Yardbirds, while Tim Bogert & Carmn Appice were members of Vanilla Fudge. With Bad Company, Paul Rodgers & Simon Kirke came from the band Free, Mick Ralphs from Mott The Hoople, and Boz Burrell from King Crimson.

ELO and Jeff Lynne were masters of their art. Such beautiful compositions. My favourite song though is 'Wild West Hero'.

The genre that you are describing in all these bands from that era is the art rock bands.

Another iconic anthem from the days of my youth! Jeff Lynne is a musical genius, he is almost a one man equivalent to the Beatles!! That’s how I rate him.

My dad and I listen to these songs all the time. Speaking of which my favorite album from them is Time. Especially the extended edition with "Julie Don't Live Here Anymore"

One of my favorites from ELO!! ❤ KILLER tune!! Love all the changes!! And Jeff's vocals are off the scale!! IMHO your next ELO reaction should be: *Fire on High* or *Do Ya* Love you guys!! ❤ @RobSquadReactions

The joy you have on your faces when it goes from the string part to the drums sums up the fun that ELO brings to life. Well crafted pop that invites you to enjoy it and it's gonna bring in all of these things to entertain and delight you. This is peak period ELO. Waiting for one day to get to the crunchy pop rock of "Do Ya", the exuberance of "All Over The World" and "Xanadu", the whirlwind pop of "Turn To Stone". And that's not even touching yet their terrific ballads like "Don't Walk Away', "Telephone Line", "Need Her Love".

i'm just amazed that this doesn't sound cheesy after all these years. I loved this band when i was a kid in the 70s.

Both of you are such wonderful people! It's such a joy to enjoy fantastic music with you. I'm in my 50's and grew up with ELO, Chicago, Supertramp, Mike Oldfield, Gary Numan, Mike Oldfield, Rush, AC/DC and so many more. There are plenty of decent bands now - unfortunately the big music companies want auto-tuned trash! Have a look at Pentatonix, Echosmith and Passanger. Please review Mike Oldfield's "Moonlight Shadow" and Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electric?". So many fantastic ELO songs - Hold on Tight, Confusion, Calling America and many more. Love Jo x

ELO qualifies as progressive rock. Sometimes called Prog Rock. Others like Kansas, the Moody Blues, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Jethro Tull, even Queen and later Beatles stuff might be classified as Prog Rock.

I know its difficult to rattle off all the great prog-rock groups but cant leave off 'Alan Parsons Project'-'Yes' or even early Styx and Super Tramp 👊🤘

I bought the 45 of this song when it was first released. It was purple instead of black like all the other 45s I had. My favorite band ever. ❤ Please put All Over the World by ELO on your list! That one is a banger, too!

One of my favorite groups…ELO and Jeff Lynn (he was in Traveling Wilbury’s with other legends).

Jeff Lynne was an old school rocker with a futuristic composition and production style. ELO were so ahead of their time in their sound and vision. Jeff Lynne is still one of my favourite producers.

Part of the wonderful sounds you mention includes the harmonies and vocals which in my opinion are special instruments as well. So many songs are amazing, Telephone Line, Mr. Blue Sky, and Don't bring me down as others in the comments have suggested. Thank you for appreciating great music, love your reactions.

💡Jeff Lynne is a true musical genius. While “Telephone Line” always chokes me up, its sequel, “Sweet Talking Woman” always makes me smile.🛸

Hey guys. So nice to see beautiful people reacting to beautiful music. I think what Amber is asking about is the layering of instruments and "contrapuntal" (counterpoint) lines between instruments. If you listen to the electric guitar, Jeff's playing a really catchy strum throughout, while the strings are filling in between the singing. At the same time you have the choir in the background while the singer with the low voice repeats the main vocals. There's so much going on all at once... and it works great. You have to check out, " Mr. Blue Sky". It'll make you smile ear to ear. Blessings friends!

Great reaction Amber and Jay. I envy you on the fact that you are yet to hear the many other incredible ELO tracks that are being mentioned in the comments. I was a kid growing up in Australia during the 70's with a brother several years old than me and we loved ELO. We still do! Enjoy your ELO journey, your in for an absolutely treat!!

Guys, never did I think that a year ago J & A would be sitting here recognizing and comparing progressive bands like Chicago, ELO and Supertramp like they do now. You've come a LONG way! Keep going!
