Shinedown is from Jacksonville FL. The same home town as Lynyrd Skynyrd. Jasin Todd, who was the original guitarist for Shinedow is married to Melody Van Zant. Ronnie Van Zant's daughter. Ronnie was the singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd. He died in the plane crash. The young girl is Jasin & Melody's daughter That's the picture of her grandfather (Ronnie) that she is holding. The woman in the mirror is Melody. This version is about family Shinedown originally played this in Judy Van Zant's club The Freebird Live. Judy is the widow of Ronnie The cowboy hat that is seen in the video belongs to Ronnie. He used to wear it on stage

Shinedown is in the Lynyrd Skynyrd family, the guitarist, Jason Todd is Ronnie Van Zant son-in-law the little girl in the video is Ronnie‘s granddaughter. Brent stayed in there guest house for a year before their first album came out in 03. He use to sing it for Judy in at The Freebird Cafe she loved to hear him sing it. this is on Leave a Whisper the first album. Brent told Judy Van Zandt he would pay her back and he gave her the royalties for this song. In 2022 Lynyrd Skynyrd 50th anniversary Brent was invited to come on and sing simple man with Lynyrd Skynyrd at the Ryman. There is a video on KZbin. Lynyrd Skynyrd told Shinedown they could sing this song anytime they wanted and it has become a fan favorite. They don’t do very many covers. In fact, I only know of two or three that they have done. There is a lot more to the story on how this cane about. Jason Todd asked Brent to sing it on the radio & it exploded from there. 💯🔥🔥

The reasons for Shinedown doing this song are way more personal than just a cover to them. Shinedown and Skynyrd are both from Jacksonville, Florida and Shinedown's original guitarist, was Jasin Todd, and he was married to Melody Van Zant, the late, great Ronnie Van Zant's (the original singer with Skynyrd) daughter. Also, Shinedown got their first break playing regularly at a local Jacksonville venue called Freebird Live. That venue was owned by Judy Van Zant, Ronnie's widow. The guys started doing this song as a tribute to Ronnie and a thank you to Judy. Incidentally, in this video there is a bit with a little girl holding a picture of a man. The picture is of Ronnie and the little girl is his granddaughter.

This is a good cover. As a comparison, listen to the original by Lynyrd Skynyrd sometime. The only other song that I know of that Shinedown did a cover of, besides this song, is Tie Your Mother Down by Queen. Always be honest if you know it or not. You will come upon songs that are so popular that you are likely know it. I could not do a channel like this for rock or metal since I know over 6000 songs in that genre.

I couldn’t agree more, as a musician playing in a cover band in the late 1970s we did Freebird twice a night for eight months. Freebird is a good song, but quite frankly, I’m over it. I love Simple Man, It’s an extremely heartfelt ballad.
