Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara celebrates his 300th episode by looking at Frank Miller's Holy Terror!
atopthefourthwall.com
Originally uploaded June 30th, 2014.
ORIGINAL INFO: The 300th episode is here! What is so horrible to deserve the spot? Well, it’s Miller Time…
RUMINATIONS: While Blip would remain around for another year, this was the final nail in the coffin as far as I was concerned about it being my primary revenue source. What happened was that the episodes came out on June 30th. Advertising campaigns usually run for one month - from the beginning to the end of that month. Sometimes campaigns run out early, though, by a week or a few days. In this case, the 300th episode was released between ad campaigns during a time when Blip’s revenue was starting to decrease (the buyout by Maker had happened, though I don’t know if Disney had bought Maker yet). So here I am, having released an hour and a half of material - three episodes’ worth of content on a video that netted more views than usual (labelling it the 300th episode instead of the actual review name tends to attract people) and each one of those parts going up that amount. Each video also had a midroll in it, which we had started doing to help offset the problems we were having with Blip’s decreasing revenue. And how much money did I make during that day, during that grand 300th episode celebration?
Twenty bucks. On what would normally net me several hundred dollars. Admittedly, I made a decent enough profit on it over time, but most of the views come in when it’s first released, so losing that momentum hurt bad. That was one of the reasons the year had such a bad reputation for me - investing a lot of time, energy, and effort into something that got nearly NOTHING in return.
Patreon had only recently come about and most of us were skeptical, wanting to see it develop more before we threw our lot into it, let others test the waters and figure out the benefits and downsides of it… but after such a horrible showing for it, I started it up and began promoting it. It was pretty successful, actually, hence why midrolls disappeared shortly after this episode and I still haven’t added any to the videos that have midroll bumpers.
The 200th episode had been a cameofest, mostly because I was trying to emulate what I thought was a really successful 200th episode - the Cinema Snob’s. Brad had brought in a crapton of cameos for his 200th and it had been a fun and entertaining video, so I did the same there. However, I was the first to reach the 300th episode on Channel Awesome, so I needed to come up with something on my own. The review was obviously going to be big, but it needed something else to celebrate what had come before. I enjoy doing battle sequences if I can make them fun, so I figured a battle with Mirrorkara would be good. I had established the Megaforce morpher earlier in the storyline and decided to use it to cycle through various outfits worn over the years. The only ones that really don’t make any sense are the Pokémon and Obelisk Blue coats, which really are more for the commercial bumpers. Still, I got use out of them later in reviews (the Pokémon one, at least - the Obelisk Blue coat will come into play at some point, though). So in the end, just a fun little battle that hopefully people enjoyed. Also: Iron Liz cameo!

DC’s Big Three, and what they represent: Superman - Hope Batman - Justice Wonder Woman - Truth These qualities work key to how Superheroes, and good heroes in general, work. None of these qualities come in THIS. It’s a story of murderers killing terrorists because why not.

"The burning of a book is a sad, sad sight, for even though a book is nothing but ink and paper, it feels as if the ideas contained in the book are disappearing as the pages turn to ashes and the cover and binding blacken and curl as the flames do their wicked work. When someone is burning a book, they are showing utter contempt for all of the thinking that produced its ideas, all of the labor that went into its words and sentences, and all the trouble that befell the author." -Lemony Snicket. With that, I am glad you burnt the book, because the author deserves nothing but utter contempt for his creation.

BTW, for those KZbin-only viewers, somebody on the main site made an excellent point. Nobody would have found out about the biological bomb if not for the jet fighters and suicide bombers. His family all left him, because his militarism, racism and paranoia have gotten completely out of hand, well even more so than usual. Holy Terror. So many things to say. First, for a book that supposedly took five years to write and draw (even taking into account the projects Miller took (mainly directing The Spirit)), not only it looks lazy (both in the writing and the art), I'd even say it looks unfinished. I know that Linkara pointed out the lack of backgrounds, but on top of that, the comic looks like it got five different art-styles. There's the Sin City style that we see toward the last half, there's the highly detailed splash pages (probably the only art that I find decent) from the beginning, there's the weird cartoony caricatures from the so-called 'satire' pages, there's the weird 'modern art' pages (the tons of tiny rectangles and the one with the red show and the green card) and there's the under-detailed simple (and sometime copy-pasted) style of the pages with a lot of panels. Not only the artwork is inconsistent, but the tone is as well. It seems to try to be dramatic and heavy (well, as heavy as a Sin City comic can be. SC's attempt at drama always felt kinda ridiculous considering how the whole thing is basically action shlock with overblown machismo), and yet the terrorists are depicted as cartoony and over the top silly (especially that leader with his bead chainmail). It looks like that comic doesn't know what it wants to be. That terrorist leader with the beads is pretty much the only part that actually made me laugh. He's the only part that wouldn't feel out of place in an old-school propaganda comic due to his costume and his dialogue. Why couldn't the rest of the book be like this? Oh...yeah. Frank Miller. To sumup Miller's fall from grace, The Dark Knight Strikes Again showed that he can't write satire anymore (although Tales to Offend might be a contender for some), All-Star Batman and Robin showed that he can't write superheroes anymore, The Spirit showed that he can't even write crime stories (his favorite genre) anymore and Holy Terror showed that he can't write human beings anymore. Show of hands, who wants to read a trade of Ms. Marvel to wash off the taste of this piece of trash?

I know I’m late to this, but for any later viewers out there that want a little levity from this, allow me to do the honor. The 2003-2005 CGI Straight-to-DVD Hot Wheels movies all had diverse racial representation. For example: Kadeem and Monkey are implied to be Arabic, Tork is African American, Nolo is Latino, Shirako is implied to be Japanese, and Taro is a first gen Japanese-American. Lani, Karma, and Esmeralda were notable female drivers. Other background characters, most notably in Highway 35, were also diverse. If Frank handled that series, the white characters would be “manlier”, the characters of a different race would be incompetent or incapable, and all the females would be sexy mechanics. Or he’d reboot the 60s cartoon (the same where the first episode portrayed a prominent female mechanic to be incompetent) and use it as a justification to be sexist and the like. It’s good to know that even a franchise like fucking Hot Wheels can portray diverse characters in the 2000s better than an acclaimed writer nearly a decade after. Edit: Yes, higher-ups were hesitant on Kadeem having Mid-Eastern roots so soon after 9/11, but they did ultimately let it go through, showing the amount of balls Mattel and others on the project had to show-off such a character without much stereotyping or character assassination.

I don't know why but I actually feel a great deal of pity for Frank Miller's mentor (whoever he is, I forget), because as the old saying goes: "There are no bad students, only bad teachers," that being said he must be so bad as a teacher to allow this schlock from one of his pupils. By this time after 300, he must be so embarrassed of Frank and himself that he took such a man under his wing and failed miserably with him that he'll now avoid mentioning that in public, especially at conventions, assuming he's been invited.

To Frank Miller’s credit, at least in 2018 he finally admitted to how utterly messed up Holy Terror was (if only to an extent). SOURCE: www.theguardian.com/books/2018/apr/27/frank-miller-xerxes-cursed-sin-city-the-dark-knight-returns “My stuff always represents what I’m going through, ... Whenever I look at any of my work I can feel what my mindset was and I remember who I was with at the time. When I look at Holy Terror, which I really don’t do all that often, I can really feel the anger ripple out of the pages. There are places where it is bloodthirsty beyond belief. ... I don’t want to go back and start erasing books I did, ... I don’t want to wipe out chapters of my own biography. But I’m not capable of that book again.” I can’t say for sure whether or not Mr. Miller was being sincere in this statement, but at least it’s something.

Well. As someone who hasn't been following the show for too long, that last portion was just as confusing as it was awesome. Such as the BFG I assume only works when singing that song about a brand new combine harvester. But I digress. This show is great, even from the short time I've been watching it. Comic books are an intriguing subject to me, having never really read that many comics beside a Simpson's comic I got back in primary school and these videos are really entertaining and interesting. I've even developed my own comic book idea that I hope to actually get into print somewhere once I become established as a writer. I can't wait to see more of these videos and learn more about this world that's become permeated within pop-culture, and yet the original sources are largely obscure. Thanks Linkara, I can't wait to see more great videos from you!

I honestly hope that people listen to what he said. Frank Miller has a right to publish a bigoted book and people have the right to buy it. But people also have the right to critique and laugh at it. Linkara isn't trying to destroy and erase this travesty of a comic book from history he's simply getting rid of his own property.

Thank goodness there was never a continuation of this comic. One could only imagine what it would be like... The second comic would be about The Fixer resurrecting Vlad the Impaler for advice on how to torture terrorists in a more gruesome manner. The third comic would have The Fixer releasing a virus into the atmosphere that kills anyone of Middle Eastern descent. The fourth comic wouldn't be a comic at all; it would just be a bunch of crude drawings on a padded cell of an insane asylum of The Fixer maiming ISIS members... I think I'll stop... I am glad to have taken a number of good things to heart thanks to Atop the Fourth Wall, but I have taken nothing of value from Holy Terror, except not to waste a second of considering buying it. After all, it’s as you say, Frank Miller has the right to sell it, you have the right to convey how ridiculous and offensive it is, and I have the right to refuse to buy a single copy of or recommend to anyone I know this INSULT TO COMICS AS A MEDIUM. One has to wonder if Frank Miller developed his racist views after reading the over-rated, over-bloated and over-written plotted novels of Ayn Rand. In addition to that, he used the plot of Atlas Shrugged in his Give Me Liberty series. I mean, there is no way one could believe in Randianism or at least adapt aspects of Randian egoism, (I will not call it by what is the name for moral realism here) and not be a racist at all.
@CosmoShidan
@CosmoShidan 7 жыл бұрын
darkrage6 Though a Randian would most likely endorse retaliation in an event such as 9/11, and the use of military force to invade another country insofar as the enemy of reason and freedom must be punished severely. Especially if the enemy combatant is suspected of attacking home soil. This is outlined in the Virtue of Selfishness and is most likely that Miller read it, as he cited Atlas Shrugged as an influence on Martha Washington at one point.
@jamesadamsfl

Ironically, Rand herself rejected racism, viewing it as nothing more than untalented people trying to take credit for what their ancestors and/or neighbors did.
@jamesadamsfl
@jamesadamsfl 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, in hindsight, I have heard that Rand's philosophy was whatever she said it was at a given time.I've never read Rand's books. My best friend seems to think Atlas Shrugged was well-written at the very least. The Fountainhead on the other hand . . . an all-powerful architectural critic seeks to ruin a gifted designer to ensure the masses remain complacent and the status quo is preserved . . . Yeah, that is the most self-indulgent and self-righteous thing I had ever heard until I saw Moviebob's review of Glass and realized Shayamalan was pretty much exactly the same. Heck, even Dante wasn't that self-indulgent, and he sent his enemies to literal Hell!

So, my theory is the FIXER is actually CRAZY STEVE (the hobo who Linkara suggested stole BATMAN's identity & became the GD BATMAN of ASBAR) of an alternate universe where BATMAN doesn't exist & CRAZY STEVE became the FIXER! Also, NATALIE STACK is this universe's BONKERs BETTY (ASBAR's WONDER WOMAN), Black Canary, & Catwoman all rolled up into one character!" Also, they aren't fighting Islamic terrorists, just hallucinations produced by their paint fume damaged minds from huffing paint & brain damage from the explosion, which was the result of a faulty gas main, with it being viewed as a terrorist attack being just another delusion of FIXER & NATALIE STACK! Also, I imagine DC would pass on it if Frank intended for BATMAN to use guns like the Fixer!
