@hunterkiller2321345 жыл бұрын
@@AK-47ISTHEWAY Depends on the ammo and what is defined as practice. "Shotgun ammo" is a broad term and can encompass everything from turkey loads to goose loads. The ammunition used to pop clays is not the ammunition I would use to defend my home. The truth is, even if most gun owners own or use shotguns, few train with shotguns. And that's not to say that not training with one is a bad thing. It is, after all, an increasingly obsolete platform in a world with very capable semi auto rifles. One can train with a pistol and rifle for the rest of their life and be more than fine. But if one does option a shotgun for their defensive tool then they ought to train with it. I worked at a facility that did firearms training for civilians and it is telling that we never hosted a shotgun class because no one ever signed up when we did.
@AK-47ISTHEWAY5 жыл бұрын
@@hunterkiller232134 I had the exact opposite experience. At the Heritage Guild in Easton, Pennsylvania we would have multiple shotgun events every month. Shotgun shells are generally pretty low pressure, it's not like there's rifling to wear out, and most people don't shoot their defensive style shotguns much so don't be afraid of the used market. My first shotgun was a police trade in 590 that had probably been owned by half a dozen people before I got ahold of it. It was over twice as old as I was at the time. Cleaned it up, threw some paint on it, and it ran 100%. Sold it for about what I put into it a couple years later when I wanted to upgrade.

Over the past year, I've upgraded several pump shotguns for family members and friends. I start with the basic shotgun. I've done 870s, 870 clones, Mossberg 500s, Maverick 88s and Savage -Stevens. They all get the same accessories. Sling and swivels, side saddle (Velcro attachment, aluminum holder), light with clamp and improved sights. For shotgun sights, there's many options. However, I stick with just three. Rail mounted red dot, ghost ring front w/blade and fiber optic. This last one works well on Maverick 88s, because the receiver isn't drilled and tapped. A great improvement over the standard bead is the snap-on TruGlo fiber optic front sight. It keys off the original bead and stays in place after hundreds of rounds. It is a big improvement. Indeed, the Winchester SXP Defender is now sold with this same sight factory installed. Some other options are Hogue or Magpul furniture. This, however, adds considerable cost. The above is all one needs. Additional add-ons only add weight and complexity without a measurable increase in effectiveness. Once you've optimized the gun, it's time for training and snap-cap drills to get the function and employment skills. Ultimately, you will fight the way you trained. If you haven't trained, expect chaos and mistakes... Basic Mossberg Maverick 88, with the above accessories, $256 less ammo and you can install all of the accessories in about 30 minutes. Hard to beat that if you're on a limited budget.

Overall good advice, but... 1) DO NOT use "00" indoors!!! #4 buck will hit just as hard, and not leave the exterior walls. 2) zinc and copper plated shot won't deform any less, they just cost more. I've recovered many many of them fired into flesh, and they do the same stuff plain lead pellets do.
@AK-47ISTHEWAY2 жыл бұрын
Have you ever tried hevi-shot? In my experience that stuff does not deform. They make it in 00-buck and I believe the pellets are made out of a proprietary composite of zinc and tungsten or something like that. They hit a lot harder than lead.

@@AK-47ISTHEWAY no, I have not. The cost it...daunting, and unnecessary. Heavyshot *may* (or may not) fare better against body amor, but I'm not sure anyone...even in full armor...is gonna shrug off the energy of a full charge of 12ga to the chest.

@@AK-47ISTHEWAY on a side note, it seems like all these channels want to compare #8 low brass to 9 pellet "00" high brass, but there are SO many loads in between. A #4 pheasant load or #2 or BB heavishot Coyote load is a whole different beast than a #8 skeet load. 80% of humans are stopped psychologically by a gun, but deer don't stop till they drop. I've only seen it twice, but 1 1/4oz of #4s to the body at 3 yards and 10 yards dropped them *instantly*. I have a hard time believing it wouldn't do the same to an attacker.

Some people say use birdshot to prevent damage to walls or property. Listen, if you get a home defense shotgun, and you are worried about buckshots piercing the wall, just buy a decent rifle like a Ruger mini-14 or a tactical pistol ammo carbine like hi-point or Ruger pc carbine
@rickinwi74389 жыл бұрын
Survivalists have historically argued whether a .22 rifle or a pump shotgun is the best gun for the money. After the .22 LR ammo shortage and huge price increase, I think pump shotguns are on top. During the great ammo shortage of 2013, shotshells were still on the shelves, and with only a minor price increase, if any. As a reloader, I would make the case for 12 gauge over 20 if you can handle it. I don't think it is very much heavier, and I'd rather have 12 light loads than a 20 if that's your issue. Whatever works for you though. Therefore, Reid is right, for the money, a pump shotgun is the by far the best value going. Also, with shotguns like a Rem 870 or Moss 500 in particular, you have a lot of options, including barrel and stock in particular. You can even get a rifled barrel. Point is, one shotgun, and be many guns to you, very versatile.

I haven't gone through the comments yet, but for anyone thinking the spread on buckshot would be a hazard... It isn't, at the ranges you would encounter someone within your home, the spread is really minimal... Effective as hell, but much more precise than most have been taught to think.

Agree. For under $300, there are few (if any) options better for home defense weapon. Sometimes you can find one that's well-used in the upper $100 range. I keep 00 buck in the tube, and an assortment of other loads on the stock. The loads on the side are in order from lightest to heaviest, for the purpose of having at least one of the appropriate load easily on-hand, for man or beast. We also have a plan and procedure for dealing with a unexpected, unknown, or unwanted person (U3) on the premises. If it's followed, a U3 will have been warned 5 separate ways before they are shot, and the plan also includes safe directions of fire.
