I feel the same way about the Australian National War Memorial in Canberra! Tourists may spend two or three hours there, but I, when time permits, spend the better part of a week! The highest military honour an Australian Serviceman or Servicewoman can earn is called the Victoria Cross. If the recipient survived their feats of valour, they are flown to London where, in a very formal ceremony, the Queen presents the medal personally. Most are awarded posthumously. The Memorial has The Hall of Valour. It contains the story of every Australian to earn the VC. Brings me to tears every single time!!

@@staceyrogers7807 yeah, still can't hear it without crying. It was played at both of my mom's parent's funerals with full military honors. (Both grandpa and grandma served in WWII) and every time I hear this song it takes me back grave side and I hear the 21 gun salute during the song in my head. I still shake and shiver and cry, every time. Grandpa passed in 2006, and grandma in 2016. Her sister, also a WWII veteran passed Feb 2018 and they played it then too, but not during the salute. Great Aunt Millie was a wonderful lady. She was our last surviving WWII vet in the family. A close friend, who was the last surviving WWII vet I knew, just passed on Monday. With this Covid going on, the small service is set to be immediate family only. They are hoping to have a memorial in the summer with a burial of his ashes at our local veteran's cemetary if this pandemic allows. I guess I can pay my respects then.

I thought I was tough and I could face anything. For 50 years I have lived with the pictures in my head and the pain in my heart. Seeing you and how you reacted allowed me to finally let my macho side go away and I joined you in your tears. You have given me hope again. Hope in humanity, and I can finally remove the scars that were trust upon my brothers and me upon our return from a battlefield that was bled so much blood sweat and tears. Thank You. You are correct. He's a gifted song writer for sure. He also wrote the song Pretty Little Adriana in memory of a 12 year old girl who was shot in the parking lot of a supermarket in Nashville, TN. Her name was Adriana Dickerson. She went back to the car to get change for the bubble gum machine and was caught in the crossfire of a shooting. She was found still holding a quarter in her hand. I lived in Nashville at the time (1995) and this was such a sad story to hear reported on the news. This was at a time before hearing of children being gunned down in our streets seems like a daily occurrence. Sorry, I digressed but reading the comment just brought me back to that place

Obviously not the “How Great Thou Art” interlude, but the song was written by Vince Gill after his brother passed from an overdose following years of fighting “the devil” of addiction. As a veteran, I feel this song down deep. I come from a long line of vets. Every generation down to mine has served in one branch of the military or another. My mother's parents both served in WWII as did grandma's sister and three of grandpa's brothers. Two of grandpa's brothers did not make it home alive, and one of them was never recovered at all. My dad served in Vietnam, a couple of cousins, my brother, and I served, my self in Desert Shield/Desert Storm. The next generation skipped serving, but my eldest grandson is in the Army now. I lost many non-blood brothers and two sisters in the military during my service (close friends I served with). This song always brings tears of loss and tears of pride for my family and military siblings, that they had the strength and bravery to pay the ultimate price to protect our freedoms and our way of life, and those who made it home to carry the memories of what they had to do and who they lost and continue life in honor and memory of those fallen heroes. Thanks you for your kind words at the end, speaking for my brothers and sister at arms, we appreciate your gratitude for our sacrifice. All gave some, some gave all!

Vince Gill wrote this song for the brother he lost to addiction. Powerful.

His half brother Bob Coen wasn’t an addict as far as I know. I know he drank sometimes. But I don’t think he was an addict. Anyway Vince considered him a full brother. Bob was 11 years older than Vince. He had a brain injury from a accident in 1968 and died from a heart attack in 1993. Vince originally started writing this song for his friend Keith Whitley and finished the song and sang it when Bob passed away.

I'm a Vietnam Vet. Many years ago I recewived a call from my commanding officer's daughter in Maryland That he had passed and was to be burried at Arlington. She asked if I would fly back to be an honorary pallbearer. Whithout a question I flew back and along with five others from our Division, attended his funeral. It was amazing. He was an Academy graduate, and a retired Navy Captain, so his honors included a rifle company, an honor guard and a horse drawn caisson. As honorary pallbearers we walked behind the caisson, and the military honor guard who actually handled the casked walked ahead. At the end of the ceremony, after taps, the gun salute and during the flag presentation, this song was quietly sung from behind some nearby trees. We had all been solemn but fine, until then. Needles to say, I will never forget.

There is a Civil War in Myanmar, civilians being slaughtered, the on going genocide by NATO backed ISIS terrorists continues in Syria, Libya & Iraq. The Economic war by the USA continues against the people of Venezuela, Cuba, Russia, Iran, Yemen, Syria & DPRK causing the starvation of millions. The western backed genocide in Yemen. The US backed ethnic cleansing of the Semitic people of Palestine by Zionist war criminals. The continued ethnic cleansing of the Indigenous people of the American Continent. I agree, NOBODY has to lose somebody they love, but western wars based on lies have slaughtered millions, and its the silence from the citizens of the world that is equally to blame. I saw children in Ireland being shot at by British imperial occupiers, the same is happening in Palestine and Syria, did you know the Coptic Christians {speak Aramaic) support Syrian President Assad because US/NATO/Israeli backed terrorists target Christians and kill them. NATO soldiers are fighting for to wrong team. Was Creates unnecessary deaths. War archives nothing. Every honest Soldier desires peace.. Its corrupt politicians who desirer war!
