Side note to Reid's comment on the phone. any cell phone can call 911. It does NOT have to be activated and have a monthly bill. As long as it powers on and shows signal it will dial 911. Stop at the Family Dollar and get you a cheap prepaid flip phone. $20 to have a secondary communication to 911 is priceless.

Travis Williams The one time I had to use a hand gun in self defense, my wife and I were sleeping in a room with no windows and only one door which this dude high on pcp, using a filthy 12 inch kitchen knife, was attempting to come through... and I left the phone in the next room over, my office/place of business. Big mistake. Keep that phone with you, at your bedside, at a minimum. I keep a pistol, light, spare mag and a phone.

I think it should always be stated in such videos that the BEST protection regarding home invasions is doors which cannot be kicked in. They can make a HUGE difference -- at their very WEAKEST they would at least provide more time to gather your gear, shake the cobwebs out of your head, and assess the immediate circumstances. At best they will prevent the invasion before it even gets started.

"Don Alejo Garza Tamez" is a 77 year old man that died fighting off Mexican cartels who came to steal his house. He did a pretty good job defending his home taking out 4 cartel members, injuring 2 left on the scene and unknown numbers who left while injured. He did end up dying, after they couldn't get him with gunfire they retreated and attacked his house with grenade launchers.

Remember also, if the home invaders are not wearing masks, it's because they aren't going to leave any witnesses around. It's very important to go over this stuff with your family, so everyone is on the same page. We have survived thousands of years based on our intuition, listen to what your instincts are telling you. There is no perfect solution for defense of a home invasion, try and be prepared and have plenty of options available.

Unimportant. Home invader forfeits right to life upon unwarranted entrance regardless of mask or no mask.

Something to add about having a mobile phone in your bag.... All mobile phones, even those that have no service, can dial 911. Got an old phone from a service you no longer use? As long as it holds a battery charge, you can re-purpose it as an emergency phone for calling 911.

Nothing can beat a well-trained dog for home defense. There really is no substitute. The dog buys you so much valuable time to react that you don't have otherwise.

As a licensed Medic I would caution against using any needles in these types of situations. If it's your family and loved one's and you have the proper training to use a chest dart, then go for it, but anyone else I wouldn't. Once you break the skin, that's technically an advanced intervention and good Samaritan laws will not protect you. I have no doubts about Rieds skills and knowledge, but any not trained civilian could actually do more harm than good. Just don't want people to try to do what's right and end up getting in trouble in this sue happy world we live in. Great video as always and look forward to more.

As a survivor of a home invasion against 8 assailants (who were not interested in material goods; only harm), you've done an amazing job with this video. I'm a leadslinger and an EMT as well. It's very important to know how to throw lead down range and also plug the affect down range, or if it came at yourself. Being proactive in the beginning is most important and being reactive afterwards is the next step. Again, great job brother. Also, my whole family survived the attack.

Thanks for another awesome video. I keep my AR loaded with one 40 round PMAG with my preferred HD ammo(Hornady TAP), and one spare 40 round. I am not overly concerned about burning through 41 rounds in a home invasion, and needing the second mag, but I have the second mag in case there is a malfunction with the first one.

Huge advantage indoors when shooting if you can add ear muffs to the bag. Also, if you can lay body armor next to the bag (if legal in your state to own) that could save your life also.

Great video Reid. Alot of people carry ammo but nothing first aid related. Luckily the beautiful lady I'm protecting is an ER Trauma nurse and former Army Combat Medic. We keep alot of first aid equipment in the house and go bags. I will say that battery acid will also work to cauterize a wound as well. You need to rinse it after it seals the wound though. It will hurt when used. But so does getting shot or stabbed I've been through both. But I am still here 😉

Excellent information Reid. Needle for needle decompression is a real good idea for a Paramedic (myself) or a nurse...Most folks just would not know how to do the decompression. A roll of large sticky Medical tape 3 inch to seal that plastic on 3 and 3/4 edges of a sucking chest wound might come in handy. leave that 1/4 edge untaped on a bottom edge for drainage it will seal on inspiration. Would be nice to have a Medical person do a demonstration video on technique. Best

This kit is missing the most important item - electronic amplified attenuated hearing protectors. After the first round is fired, you will be disoriented and slightly stunned causing follow up shots be to less effective, and you lose one of your main senses for a long time - your hearing - which you might need intact if the home invasion is ongoing. Also amplified hearing protectors will enhance your ability to hear, adding to your defensive capability. It is easy to simply hang some electronic ear muffs on the sling to your go bag where they are readily available. As for your needle for chest decompression, unless you are a trained and current medical professional (i.e., a paramedic or critical care nurse, etc.) who is operating in a professional capacity under the standing orders of a physician advisor, it is HIGHLY ILLEGAL to perform tension pneumothorax decompression. So why have the needle in the first place? It takes a LOT of experience to be able to accurately assess breath sounds in the field and evaluate a patient's signs and symptoms to make the diagnosis of tension pneumothorax and it takes a lot of training to be able to know how to properly and safely perform the procedure. You have to be able to locate the correct spot for needle insertion - which is usually the 2nd rib space in the mid-clavicular line, and it MUST be done on the side of the chest where the collapsed lung is occurring. Which means you better be extremely good at assessing breath sounds in the field. Where is your stethoscope? Just how do you plan to assess breath sounds without a stethoscope, and even if you do carry a stethoscope, do you have the training and experience necessary to use it? If you do puncture someone's chest with a needle you will cause air to enter the chest cavity. They will need to have a chest tube inserted at the hospital, which commits them to a critical care unit for a very long time. If you fail to use a stethoscope or don't have the required training and medical authorization you will likely be charged with FELONY ASSAULT and sentenced to prison for a good while, not to mention being sued by the patient. Also, supplemental oxygen might be all the patient needs to get him/her to the emergency room without chest decompression. It is far better to leave such advanced, invasive procedures to the Emergency Room physician (or paramedics) if at all possible.

Full Metal jacket 88 No doubt. I took 3 First Aid classes in college for some of my electives. It was most of the classroom work (minus the more hands on training) of what was required for a basic EMT. That's not much training but I could help stop or slow bleeding, help with breathing. Just the basic ABCs will buy you some time until the professionals get there. You never know when some basic training & basic equipment will come in handy. Some years ago we saw a car accident in a remote part of New Mexico. A woman involved had a nasty scalp injury. There was about a 4" X 2"flap opened up & it was a windy dusty day. We put the flap back & covered it. When she was sure she didn't have a neck injury she sat up & we wrapped it a little better & covered other cuts & scrapes This was before everyone had cell phones & It took over an hour to get an ambulance there. We went to the hospital the next morning to say hi & see how she was doing. Turns out she didn't have a serious injury. It looked really nasty & bled lots but wasn't serious. Anyways, she said we helped keep her calm & the doctor said keeping her woulds clean was a big help. He said if that flap had of been open for an hour in that dust it would have been a real problem to clean & close. Did we save a life? Nope but we did help. In my book that makes it worth carrying a first aid kit around. Not to mention if it was a family member or a truly serious injury. It's cheap insurance. I even have a kit with stuff I don't know how to use because there just might be someone else there that does know how to use that stuff. Better to have it & not need it applies to first aid equipment too.

Thank you for helping that person. Head lacerations always bleed to the point of making them look way worse than they actually are. Wound cleaning is a real pain in the ass, and that person would have had that surgeon cleaning out that wound for a lot longer than he did if you hadn't have intervened. The Doctor may have even had to cut away the dead tissue that came in contact with the contaminants.

Z0mb3h Hunt3r I got a lifelong friend & a good story out of it. Turned out we both live in Albuquerque & were at the lake for the weekend. She lives across town now but back then she lived close to my house & we became fast friends. I think in the city people assume someone else will help but when there aren't lots of others around people are still willing to stop & help. We were not the only ones to stop that day. Several people stopped & helped as much as they could.

Great video. Situational awareness is most important - know your neighbors, passive security barriers need to be in place - Rose bushes planted by the windows, a dog (pet) are examples. Security camera is always a good idea - or just a security sign would help (passive). Outside motion detection lights. Bad guys look for easy targets first. A long gun with an attached light is must IMO ...Or ANY gun with bullets - preferably in the gun! Just a little thought of a plan will go a long way. Great tip on on medical supplies. Brother, your have no idea how far ahead of the normal person we are for just even thinking about this stuff. My wife laughs about my "Go" bags and back up plans. I just smile knowing she and my loved ones are protected. Thank you for your concern and teaching.
