This wouldn't have raised so much as an eyebrow 100 years ago. People today have lost touch with how their food arrives on their plate.

I know. It’s very sad. I posted a picture of Charlie with the deer that he’d shot on a facebook page that’s all about owning woodland. Only posted it as people had been talking about shooting air rifles/shotguns in their woods only to get negative comments and told it was a disturbing image??? Then my picture/post removed. Obviously these folk that own woodland aren’t that bothered about managing it properly or eating some of the best meat around!

@@doingoutdoors875 When you posted the short on here I thought "here we go" Images like your lads deer will always upset some people, and you'd be wasting your time trying to convince them otherwise. In reality Shooting is just like fishing,without people doing either sport the fish/wildlife populations would be in trouble.Anglers and Shooters are some of the best conservationists there are. Involvement at a young age ensures it carries on in future. Pretending it doesn't happen or getting triggered helps neither man nor beast.

It definitely wasn’t an easy thing to do emotionally. These animals are well loved by all the family. But the reality is, if you want to eat meat something has to die. Thanks for your support. 👍🏻

May I ask why refrigerate the meat after slaughter? How would you know it is a bad piece of meat, sick animal, or poisoned? How do you store the other cuts that you didnt cook? Did you freeze it? How long can it stay in the freezer before you cook it? Vacuum sealed correct? Im learning. Thank you for your video. Want to start a farm myself

Generally when they're that young the only thing you'd have to worry about is worms, sheep parasites don't cross with humans typically. You also generally don't have to worry about parasites so long as you're giving them a decent life. That means minerals, and more to eat than just grass. You at least need alfalfa or clover too. But like goats sheep will definitely get down on some trees and other browse as well. As far as refrigerating it's best to let them hang for a few days in a 35-45 °F ice box if you can typically that's not always possible if you don't have a spare. One parasites and bacteria, but it firms the meat up and makes processing easier. Back to the decent life you'll also get a way better quality animal giving the minerals better forage and supplementing w a little grain say 4-8 oz a day. Where I'm at between mineral, alfalfa and supplementary barely the costs in that are equal or less than the animal itself maybe $200 for a year khatadin generally will go for about $200 here at 6 months old, a bigger Cheviot or something similar to what this gentleman had for like $300+ It's definitely worth it in the quality of the product to go that extra mile but also to give the animal the best life it can have.

Great to see Charlie so interested and involved. Does he (or the others) get upset when the animals are dispatched? We are raising a batch of meat birds from eggs at the moment and I’m dreading dispatch day, I think I’ll be emotional and my daughter definitely will be.
@doingoutdoors875
@doingoutdoors875 Жыл бұрын
It’s very difficult to dispatch animals that you’ve reared yourself as there’s always some emotional attachment. I think we all had a lump in out throat when the sheep had to go, but if you want to eat meat something has to die and I’m happy that our animals have had the best life I could give them. Good luck with your chickens I’m sure it will go smoothly. The meat birds we have just done gave some excellent meat. 👍🏻
@amybradley4606

Definitely agree. Part of the reason we are doing it is to truly get to grips with the realities of meat eating. The other part is feeling so uncomfortable and disgusted with the way meat is raised, I don’t feel I can buy into that any longer.

Nice video. I can imagine that it would be a bit emotional but that's why you wanted to raise your own meat - quality meat for your family and quality life for the beast. An older lamb is a Hogget - should have the front 2 adult teeth in. At the start you looked as if you expected to hear a buzzer and see the nose light up.

Think it’s great to show your children where meat comes from and the right way to do it.. some people will be squeamish about such content but are happy to munch down on meat without second thought. Also, at parts where you’ve put music in over the top it might help to rebalance your audio a wee bit so we can still hear you clearly when you’re explaining things. Also would be interested in seeing some more dishes you put together from this fella! Full farm to plate journey is great

I’ve had negative comments before about shooting and eating deer, the same people will happily buy meat from the shop 🤷🏼‍♂️ I made the music a little louder to drown out my ramblings 🤦🏻‍♂️ bad call. Will definitely get some dishes on the channel, especially once we have loads of home grown vegetables to accompany the home grown meat. The Missis is cooking a lamb neck stew as I type this. Smells good 👍🏻

Sheep need ear tags by the time they are 9 months old, killing your own animals is ok as long as it’s only eaten by you or people in your household and you have the correct means to kill without suffering. Hope this helps. 👍🏻
