As a former welding teacher I tell you never ground of cut on a used barrel until you have filled it completely to the top with water. This is to expel any flammable vapors that might been in the barrel. Second you should never cut on a barrel with the caps in place. If the barrel does explode there is no blast energy to go but in your face.

I worked with a guy who was welding skids on the bottom of a fuel tank 2 metres dia 4m long that had been cleared to work on by a petroleum company. The last job was to blow a hole in the bottom for a drain Oxy-Acetylene). It had a large inspection hole in the top of the tank that was open. The end blew out and the Large oxy bottle landed 200metres away. My brother had a 500 litre diesel tank that the scrap metal merchant would not take because of the dangers. BE WARNED

I think this is a great idea. I'm in Ohio and the laws on outdoor open burning are extremely strict. Even burning in an open barrel is very strict and they have strict guidelines on how it must be built! But if you use a wood burning stove such as this outdoors, the laws are extremely relaxed. I might make a version of this but on a larger scale. Burning plastic is a no, no so if your going to do it, don't tell or show it on a video.

I have a news flash for the critics on here, the vast majority of plastic waste (yes even today) is not recyclable and is in fact burned because it cannot possibly all be landfilled. Mkay, you're welcome for the real environmental education you have received today. Also in many places people cook with burned waste because they are poor and they cannot afford any better options. That’s very fancy! The last time I had to do something like that I was in the US Army and we were in Denmark during an exercise in 1985. We didn’t have a stove for our tent because apparently it went “missing” somehow. It was winter and extremely cold with tons of snow. So we went to the trash pile and got a barrel like yours and took an axe to it because we didn’t have the right tools. So we cut a hole in the top for the pipe and one in the bottom like you did but no hinges, just pulled away the sheet metal like a door and stuck wood in it. It worked great, except we forgot to clean out the oil that was left and it burned! It smelled bad and there was lots of smoke in our tent but at least we stayed warm. We used wood that we found in the trash pile and branches that had fallen from tress because we weren’t allowed to actually cut wood from the trees. Good times!

@@kalleklp7291 well thank God that I was in the Army Reserves in 1980-82 and not in Europe! By the way we loved going to Denmark in the Spring and Summer, Fall wasn’t too bad either, but that winter! So we went to Germany last year in February and were planning to go up to Denmark but the weather wasn’t good so we decided to go to the Netherlands instead. But we’re planning another trip to Europe after the whole COVID-19 thing is done. Thanks for the words of appreciation, we definitely felt appreciated in Denmark whenever we were there.

End your stove pipe right at the top of the barrel where it connects do not extend it into the barrel and it will burn much more efficiently. Make a 3 inch tall collar out of a piece of pipe one size up from your stove pipe diameter that the stove pipe can snugly fit in and weld it on top of the barrel where you would insert the stove pipe. drill three holes around the collar equal distance around for sheet metal screws (In case you want to take the chimney down later for storage). Weld a steel lip or some kind of other seal around the top door and put high temp woodstove gasket on it for better air seal you are losing vac-cum here for the chimney draw. ( you dont have to do this on the bottom door but its a good idea with air flow valves). If you can extend the stove pipe another four feet in height it will greatly improve your chimney draw and burn very hot and fast and efficient. i love your design and was going to build one for myself before I ran across yours. I LOVE THE PORTABLE IDEA...VERY SMART and since its not connected to the house like the old barrel stove/incinerator I used to have no pesky inspections from the city. you have a buoyancy problem with the pipe a foot into the barrel and the air leakage in the top door and for more suction power you should have four more feet of stove pipe. the power of the draw is determined by the height of the chimney. I was in the chimney trades for 20 years and worked on and built a lot of barrel stoves thats how I know this. Do this and it will purr like a jet engine. Put air flow control valves on the bottom door and ,make it air tight and you can control how fast it will burn and easily shut it down if it gets to hot. Again I REALLY love your design and I'm going to make one for myself. thank you for the video -- Wayne

The final part of his video left me stunned! I'd say he had everything but a good idea ... I recently joined his channel intrigued by his previous project, so I am amazed at the irresponsibility with which he used and thinks of using this bin transformed into a furnace: even burning plastic waste without any filter !!! I also know - and I am certainly not an expert - that the combustion of plastics releases highly toxic and harmful fumes into the atmosphere, containing, for example, a very dangerous substance for humans such as dioxin. I hope that in the future he will use his latest creation to limit himself to burning only waste from woodworking (which is already a polluting and totally inappropriate practice if it does not have at least the heating of homes as an end), otherwise his conduct could only be defined that criminal !!!

This is very helpful for people to grab a old barrel and just cut into it, old barrels that have had oil in them become explosive when sparks enter them and could kill people. Maybe put a disclaimer in that you have no regard for your safety but if you are going to attempt this to remove the oxygen from the barrel first. Run some exhaust into the barrel until the barrel is warm to touch before cutting into it. Rinsing it out does not get the flammable material from the seems. Remember folks people put all kinds of stuff in barrels so besafe cutting into them no one needs to get hurt or killed.

Dang... I sure thought the cool idea was making it a smoker for some good, self smoked grub. Instead it's adding to a problem. Great design, not so much on purpose. That being said , you seem quite skilled my friend.

The barrel if it had contained oil, it must be absolutely clean OR filled with water up to just below where you are going to be grinding and making sparks, leaving as little air space as possible. ANY oil vapor in the large barrel area can be ignited by the heat and sparks of grinding and explode VERY powerfully.

The grate at the bottom with a door to remove ash is a very cool idea. In my country we are supposed to take our burn barrels to the county dump and pay to empty then. Not an easy task if you don't own a truck. I wouldn't burn plastics in the barrel because they emit some pretty nasty chemicals into the environment but for paper and wood this would be very handy.

That's a fantastic way to pollute as long as there's smoke coming out your polluting with burnt plastic and all that lovely ship you have to burn something constantly at like 1,500 degrees before it becomes an incinerator and not just the trash barrel you're going backwards in time

Some of these comments are a bit harsh. It was an interesting video with some useful techniques. I liked the idea of putting the hinges on before the flaps had been completely cut. But seriously, who posts a KZbin video of themselves burning plastic? Surely that scene was just a wind up?! If not, I thoroughly look forward to your video on how to quickly and easily dispose of waste oil whilst at sea.

Aren’t you in Britain? Huge Fines here in Maryland for burning Garbage, and Building Materials. On top of that, you’re need a Burn Permit, which is only available from after Labor Day to Memorial Day, cost $25.00, must have the burn pile inspected and the permit is good for 60 Days to burn cut brush, and cut brush only. BTW, my Grandfather turned part of his Farm into a Summer Tourism. All us Kids had to do a Summer there. He had 33 gallon barrels cut in half a welded together, and the two halves hinged together. Yep, the Creosoted Post weren’t good enough for him we had to Hot Dip them in Creosote, Fish them into the hinged other Section, then onto a Rebar Rack. If it caught fire, we were supposed to flip the hinged section over onto the dip section.

I burn everything, plastic, paper, cans, etc. Why pay to have it picked up. At the end of the month I have about a 30 gallon garbage bag of tin cans left to take to the dump. It costs me about a dollar in gas vs, 40 dollars for garbage pickup. I know, your going to ask about the pollution. It's not against the law here and also I DON"T CARE!!!
