Jeff, I recommend getting some closed cell craft foam and covering the edges of the wing in it so it doesn't scratch the paint, and air won't get under it and cause a whistling effect. Water might be an issue but if you're diligent with drying the foam off you should be fine.
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 6 жыл бұрын
I didn't think about whistling. That could be an issue, true. I am not keen on foam for rust like you mention, but I will keep thinking about it.

Hey Jeff, good work, just a thought on flat flexible panels, you could fold up a small top hat shaped stiffener and bond it on the inside. Works a treat and keeps it looking better.
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 6 жыл бұрын
Do you mean basically a circle of metal, something like the size of a roll of masking tape (or whatever size I suppose works). Interesting. That is a good idea. I can imagine that would work quite well. Good tip.

Hi Jeff, Loving the videos. I have been following you as I have been doing up my Z too. Youre a few episodes in front of my actual progress. I am currently fitting the wing now. Can you give a bit more details how you attached the fibreglass to the hollow wing and then onto the fibreglass you laid onto the hatch? I have also thought of using wing nuts or similar so I can fiberglass around the nut to create a captive nut but the wings will prevent it from spinning. Any advice is much appreciated. Cheers.
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 6 жыл бұрын
I laid it wet on wet. So I laid the wet fibreglass on the hatch and laid some around the edge of the wing, and then put them together wet, so they joined. Wing nuts would have be a much better option.

Jeff, we must have purchased the spoiler from the same ebay supplier. The rear I can make work and look okay. The front will be more of a challenge. Apparently I still haven’t learned that “you get what you pay for”. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

@HomeBuiltByJeff

Leaving it stock at this stage and see how it goes. As it is still going to be an NA L28, it is not going to be too fast where I think it will be a huge issue.

I like what you did to make the spoiler more stable. You could always put a black decal under the areas of the spoiler on the 1/4 panels, in case it does rub. Any plans to run the car in the Targa Tasmania when its done?
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 6 жыл бұрын
The black decals is a great idea. I have just been thinking that I may not have left enough room for the tailgate to click shut ;) As for the Targa, not at this stage, but I am interested in possibly the Classic Adelaide.

Nice job . Maybe cavity foam inside would have worked, then a skim of fibreglass?
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 6 жыл бұрын
Many have suggested that, but the skim would not be perfectly lined up with the car, and how do you mount the captive nuts. Also foam has a nasty habit of soaking up water and then rusting out panels.

Hi Jeff, it's been a year (?) since the 911 was painted, can you do a quick review of the paint status, as I am quite curious how your method of rust converter, epoxy, paint has held up. Any small bubbles, etc?

I did it slightly differently on the 911 to what I am doing on the Z, but the paint on the 911 is still perfect (except for where I damaged it ;) ).

Hi Jeff I was wondering you used a die grinder to clean up the inside of the fenders and parts of the inside of the vehicle to take off the rust and some paint would be OK if I just used a drill and wire wheel brush since I don’t have an due grinder?

The spoiler looks good. I was thinking an alternative method for fixing could be to epoxy glue some threaded rod to the wing, drill through the tailgate and have nuts underneath, I dont quite understand how you are going to fix it with the captive nuts unless you have exposed screws/bolts on top of the wing. I must have missed something....
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 6 жыл бұрын
The captive nuts are now part of the wing, as it is now all fibreglassed together. Now I will be able to unbolt it from underneath and take it off. I do like your idea of the threaded rod though. The only thing for me would still be the hollow ends of the wing which I don't like.
@jeffintoronto5712
@jeffintoronto5712 6 жыл бұрын
I'll be interested in how the spoiler turns out. I would have cut the 2 ends off and permanently mounted them to the rear wings/fenders and put the middle section on to the hatch. I wouldn't want the small gap between the surfaces. Hope it doesn't mar the paint or give you whistling.

No, I think the spoiler should just cover the boot lid too - the ends are going to annoy your perfectionism: they won't be flush and will look odd.

I would highly suggest using stainless steel hardware when adding a wing like this. I literally has to rip the wing off a 280z I recently purchased because all of the nuts and bolts had rusted and would not come loose.

Jeff what MIG do you use? Never saw this answered it all the videos but might have missed it
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 6 жыл бұрын
I use an old CIGWELD Mig which I bought over 15 years ago. I am not an expert welder, but it is definitely worth using gas over gasless. At least here in Aus, you can now buy bottles that you can just swap over when they are done, as opposed to paying an annual rental like it was in the past.

240Z's have lift issues as it is. Adding a rear spoiler w/o a chin spoiler is asking for trouble at high speeds.

Now the thing to do with the wing is get some short strand fiberglass filler, put a thin layer on the bottom of the wing and bolt it on top of the paint. That will fill in the lil gaps and make it easier to blend it just right into the rear of the body.

Home Built By Jeff I did and I'm talking just for that last lil bit of tightness. Just to smooth the transition between the fiberglass and the steel..
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 6 жыл бұрын
I did that in the video? I fibreglassed straight onto my tape to get a mould of the car, and then joined the wet fibreglass from the wing onto the wet base on the car so now it is all one piece, perfectly moulded to the car.

Is it ok to put filler over the epoxy primer? I thought body filler had to be on bare metal. Cheers!
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 6 жыл бұрын
Yes. I was always of the same opinion, but that is the old school way of doing it. The new method, with the new paint technologies, is that you can put filler over epoxy primer. I have now teamed up with a paint company and I am moving forward with their guidance.

I don't know about magnets holding it when the wind is hitting it at speed, but you could do the same as I have, but without the bolts and just sikaflex it on. It will be well and truly firm enough.

How about filling the wing cavity with foam?
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 6 жыл бұрын
I have had a couple suggest that, but that wouldn't really help. It wouldn't hold the captive nuts, and it would have to be sealed itself. It would jut end up soaking up water and causing a heap of rust later.
