You've got a nice daily and three project cars. Now you've got another project that you will be renewing every two months or so. Mrs Jeff definitely deserves to keep the Beetle, and it should be THE best in all Australia aswell lol!!! Good progress on the Z, love it!!

Ripper ! another great vid. love the way you show the highs and the lows, all us car nerds face them. If Mrs Jeff wants a Yellow Beetle then i think you should show the love and build it for her (a happy girl = a happy guy)

That was a trap having the bolts also glued in..I have done similiar things..some anti seize grease on the bolt may help too. The bottom of the spoiler looks good being filled in. Mrs Jeff did very well with fun facts, she speaks very well

See that's what I was trying to explain last week with the body filler. Only thing more I said was once you applyed it, to put the panel back on, let cure then body work it into the body some so its just a super smooth transition... Sorry for being vague about it. Looks good tho mate! Keep up the work and great content!

I share your love of rivnuts but I think you made the right call trying to bond the nuts in place. If they don't hold you may want to weld some wings on the nuts to help them bond, .02. Nice work as always.

I didn't think of welding on wings. That is a great idea. At least one of them needs to be sorted.

I would have filled the wing with expanding foam, then trimmed it flat, and then just used some double-sided auto-tape to mount it on the rear deck lid. It's how car manufacturers attach trim to cars, and it works bloody great. To make the end of the wing nice - where it hangs out over the rear quarter panel, I'd just fill it with bog, after the foam, and sand it back. The simplest ideas are nearly always the best ideas.

This way is just as easy really, and if I had actually used wing nuts, it would have worked a treat ;)

Hi Jeff, ive been doing a lot of experimenting while patching up the RA28 (Its got a LOT more rust than your project). I found the best way to get a good weld is to leave a ~1mm gap between butt welds. The weld then bridges the gap and penetrates so much better than having the edges hard up. I find since i started this there are no little hairlines once youve ground it back.
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 6 жыл бұрын
I have tried it that way as well, which is what Project Binky does. I have now found this way works best for me, and generally is fine, it is just on those couple of areas on the edge that I didn't weld it properly in the first place ;)

Hi Jeff, any chance you could throw in an update on the Porsche engine and the Datsun engine work in one of your videos? The LA episode was epic and it would be especially good to see what else your engine builder has come up with on the flat six.

I’ve seen people use car wax (carnauba) on panels before fiberglassing stuff on it when they want it to come of easy after, guess it depends a bit on the finnish of the panels they do it on if that’s going to work though.

Are there no original spoilers available? You have put a lot of work into the cheap one you bought and there still seems to be a lot f work to go to get it looking good. Also, would not rivnuts on the spoiler side make it easier to fit?

Is that going to be strong enough structure on the wing? I only ask because I've had fiberglass parts break off my cars in the past. It sucks having to park on a the side of a busy highway and walk back thru the ditch to collect the parts. It sucks even more if it flies off and hits another car. When I go captured nut on something like that I like to weld the nut to a piece of steel plate. It helps spread the load out and makes it harder for the nut to break free. Even better would be a single piece of steel sheet/plate with all the mounting nuts welded to it. I know you are already past this point now. I'm just sharing some other options for next time.

I should have used wingnuts, that would have been more for the fibreglass to bite on to.

Hey Jeff, quick question - which version of the SCA CoverALL did you receive? There seems to be gold, silver, etc. I assume small size as well?
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 6 жыл бұрын
It was the Gold Cover in the Small/Medium size, which seems to be spot on for the 911. It has a soft fleece finish on the inside against the paint, but it looks like a inside only type cover, as it doesn't look like it would be waterproof at all.
@dra911
@dra911 6 жыл бұрын
Terrific, thanks for that. I noticed that they sell a waterproof version as well. My car is under a car port, just looking for a little extra protection. Cheers!

Why not try a piece of rubber on the ends of the spoiler? That shouldn't damage the paint and it would mean theres no gap, just an idea
