I've built a piel cp328, as a structural engineer your comments regarding the importance of end grain glue joints is incorrect. All truss members are designed to transfer loads through the gussets. Not a single structure known to man was designed otherwise. The gusset are designed to transfer the loads at the joints. Not the members . Close fitting joint s ar sweeet but not structural. Gussets ARE designed to transmit these forces iregardless of butt to member glue joints. But it is a commendable video. I like resorcinal glues, look up the wood products lab in Madisonville WA. For their analysis of epoxy vs resorcinal. Your discussions regarding wood selection is great. Thanks for posting.

I worked at an aircraft company at Harlingen Texas airport where we built a crop dusting plane and i was in charge of the wing department which was made very similar to these wings. The airplane we built were like the old stearman bi planes except much stronger. We used spruce and mohagany to fabricate the ribs and the spars. Used weldwood powdered glue and small tac's to put them together. then assembled them and moved them to get covered with cotton fabric sewn together to make it big enough to cover the entire wing, then used something they called dope, a liquid that we brushed on the fabric that would tighten fabric up like a drum.Then came the rib stitching then dope and fabric with several coats of dope that kept the fabric tight. Each plane took 2 upper wings and 2 lower wings. Very interesting work. Loved it.

I am going to build a Saberwing from Azalea Aviation, and although it is a wood/composite build, the wings do employ wood and composite parts. So, the information supplied here is foundational for questions to ask, information as to how to inspect and what to look for in the wood parts and adhesives supplied in the kit. Thank you Sir. I always enjoy your work and information.

Would a card scraper be appropriate to prep glue joints? It is used for fancy cabinets in place of sanding.

Absolutely, it micro planes the wood. I bought a cheap pocket microscope(look online) and started looking at wood under it. Sanded is very ugly, so is rasped. Planed wood is sweet to look at under one of these.

Please could an addition be made to this video explaining the joining of plywood sheets. Scarf pointing of wood and plywood is the most difficult part of building a wooden aircraft. The accurate tapering the material to eliminate any voids in the joint is critical. The method of applying pressure to the joint to ensure a strong joint is most important.

Maybe a little bit of a far out question: What about laminated veneer lumber (LVL). It is supposed to be stronger and more uniform that regular lumber, and the mosquito bomber of world war 2 was made from an early form of LVL. (The mosquito aircraft specimens did not last long, but I think the problem was not the fact that the wood was LVL but rather the glue they used would deteriorate.)

I built several props out of wood and they run fine. Now, I'm building rotor blades out of wood. I find it is the best DIY material for those applications. I use aluminum for airframes though.

Door skin is only for interior doors and is barely good enough for that. It is,however,very good cut into one inch strips and used for pattern making. The pieces being glued with hotmelt glue. Called spider patterns,they are used in boat building to provide cutting lines for sheet steel or aluminum from a compound curve to a flat sheet

I have no plans to build an aircraft frame in this life, but ONE thing I learned many decades ago, never expect an end grain glue joint to last under any form of stress. Try to engineer a tongue and groove joint, with a form of gussets if possible.
@rjhinnj
@rjhinnj 7 ай бұрын
This is not common in aircraft construction because you do not want to remove wood or put holes in the long piece (longeron); it will reduce its strength integrity and create a stress point. This is the reason gussets and/or wood blocking is done.

Glue: I read that resorcinol-formaldehyde is the only glue approved for aircraft use. Is that right? Is so then why are other glues like epoxy being advocated? Please forgive my questions. I am a novice.

There is no better glue for wood aircraft construction than T-88 epoxy. The advantages are many. It doesn’t shrink and is not brittle. It is impervious to gas and oil distillates. It is stronger than the wood itself and does not require super tight joints.

Then why did congress go after Alcoa, Ford, Hughes, and many others for "Wartime profiteering"? Alcoa had to fight antimonopoly laws just to produce aluminum before the war. And when war broke out, they alone by their own effort and grit had built enough aluminum production capacity to supply the allies. But they had to fight regulation and red tape and insurmountable negative press to position themselves to save the world. Then all their effort was punished and they faced heavy fines for "profiting"...

There is no structural benefit from gluing the frame members together before gluing the gussets. All the loads are transferred through the gussets.

Orrrr...There’s quarter inch - eighth inch birch/mahogany 4’x8’ ply at Home Depot and a veneer supplier just outside of Boston in Somerville I believe...and a lumber I’ll just outside of Fall River could turn thicker stock thru their contraptions...in other words...look around locally. G luck!

Home Depot plywood usually has some imperfections in its veneers and the glues used are not to aircraft standards. Aircraft plywood is the highest grade and is not sold at Home Depot. Aircraft Spruce or Wicks Carries it

Better be careful, someone is apt to buy any wood not looking for tight grain that goes the length of the board, then dismiss the knots, where they'd say, it'll be ok.

Please do not discount the use of a glue like Gorilla glue. I have used this glue for laminates and have never been disappointed. It will foam out with squeeze out, but can be cut off with a sharp chisel or other type of cutter when cured.

If all you can find for fasteners at hardware store are sheetrock screws, go somewhere else. Sheetrock screws are for hanging sheetrock and have zero place in woodworking operations, like airframe or cabinet construction. Why? Because they will snap (break) and be unacceptable.
@rjhinnj
@rjhinnj 7 ай бұрын
The sheet rock screws shown in the video were only used for jig blocks. Screws are never used when joining wood sections in ribs or longerons!
