There are laws in place, but they are easy to work around. Where i live anyway. As long as the contractor comes back once in a while, the law sees that as he is trying to fix the problem even if he does nothing but show up and look.

Mike and his crew are great, they still want to help people. Thank you. As for the other contractor put the word put on facebook,etc. Telling people not to hire this contractor. Hopefully word of mouth will cause him enough trouble he will either do the job correctly or not be able to get another job. I don't usually do stuff like this but from my on out look I wouldn't be able to afford this kind of thing and we don't have a mike Holmes to fix it.

Mike Holmes you are what I would call A old fashion tradesman. you have pride in your work, My father always said to do it right the first time and don't cut corners. there are not very many true tradesmen out there now, People today want things done yesterday and pay as little as possible. @@michaelkendall662I had an upgraded HVAC system installed in my house a couple of years ago. All the permits had been issued and I was at home the day the township inspector came to sign off the work after the three workers, who had been in my basement all day, left. The inspector asked me who did the work; when I gave him the answer, he nodded his head, said ‘they do pretty good work,’ and signed off. I think he was in the basement for less than five minutes. Hearing from the inspector that I had made the right choice of HVAC contractor made me feel good. They were definitely not the least expensive, but the house was warm and cool. Getting the right people is important.

Never ever think that a contractor is top notch because of an ad, website etc. My career was in advertising & marketing. We are paid to make toilet water look good. Always always do in depth research before signing a contract. Not just calling a few ppl or reading a few reviews but contacting your city's inspection office etc. Take your time and plan way in advance b4 you actually need the work to begin.

I had once worked for a drilling contractor that drilled piers for new house construction, sign post holes and front porch piers. There was one contractor that built a house 13" out of level. The home owner had to tear it down and start over. I can understand 1" or 2" out of level, shims will suffice to fix that, but 13", that is insane. They put a tennis ball on the floor and it looked like it was circling a drain!!!

@@jjjacer I think it's because in the early season the budget was small. From what I could find the show basically started off with Mike volunteering his time and experience and working with contractors to get discounts for the home owners. Later on his entire crew was paid for by the TV station, as in him and his regular family with crew on their back. Many contractors he called in would also give discounts or donate their time for good publicity. On top of all that a Holmes foundation was set up to help with cost eventually to the point it was listed home owners paid about 10-20% of the bill for the work done. But as I said I am fairly sure the money was tighter before the show became one of the highest watched shows on Canadian Television.

The quote “a jack of all trades but master of none…”?? Is actually only a partial of the original. The entire quote goes as such: “A jack of all trades but master of none is always better than a master of one”.
@ShiftyMcGoggles
@ShiftyMcGoggles Жыл бұрын
Actually, the longer phrase was a later development. It started off as a jack of all trades, being simply the title you gave to the local handyman, and was a compliment. That's the guy who knows lots of basic skills, he can probably get you the basic stuff sorted and knows one or two skilled guys to call in. Which was then brought into the derogatory term of 'jack of all trades, master on none' during the Tudor period. during this time, it was seen as wasting potential to spend all your effort on a hundred skills when you could become a skilled master of one or two, such as becoming an apprentice Smith, or Mason, etc. Then, we get the full phrase, showing up about a century or two ago, where being able to do many jobs in an industrializing society, was seen as good.

Mike, I live in the NM desert. When I bought my house I put some ceramic house numbers up and made the mistake of leveling them on instillation, now they look crooked because nothing in my house is level. Plus, the former owner crushed the supports in the kitchen cabinets, they have fallen in over the last couple years, no drawers in the kitchen now either. All this to say, no sealed wall plates anywhere. The wind and sand just comes in all the time. I had put these plastic stops in and caulked all the baseboards, but my husband came in and ripped everything out.😢 None of the counters are even.

so sorry to hear about your situation down there in New Mexico? I am from Wisconsin, and thinking about moving down there in August 2025. Hope you guys have been able to find someone with Mike's type of caring + compassionate approach to things?? you mentioned in your comment about the wind and dust. Is that a common problem down there even in apartment complexes with the dust getting in? I was looking at Las Cruces or maybe Deming at this point as a possible destination. I worry about the water situation also. a guy was commenting that Deming has the largest + cleanest aquifer in the world, not sure if he was being serious? Lol's I drink a lot of H2O
@lisanowakow3688
@lisanowakow3688 23 күн бұрын
You can put stops (sorry not the real name- plastic insulation pieces) in the wall plates and use caulk around windows and doors. Also use door sweep on the bottom of the doors to keep out bugs and sand. In the winter I really recommend using window insulation kits. New Mexico has a lot of aquifers, but not all of them are clean. Albuquerque’s has a layer of gasoline on top and are a bit salty at this point. The water is pulled from lower down so the gas is not in the drinking water. A household water filter works wonders to help the taste of the water.

Would love to know if that beam is still holding up. I build and do structural work all the time and here in Ontario, you need engineering for that in order to get a permit. Where he put that post, the concrete is probably 3" thick, most likely not thick enough to pass as a footing for the post. I would also never build a wall tight to a concrete wall in the basement. The wall cannot breath between the concrete and framed wall and wood is organic so those walls will mold and rot over time because concrete always has some moisture in it. Cinder block will actually hold water inside as well. I see structural failure and mold happening in that basement.

And he goes off about it & at times I didn't know why or understand, what a waste of energy. I use to cut his tile as he laid it. Well after 2yrs I had to move on, wouldn't give out a raise. Had my own truck with tools and the jobs kept getting further away, costs go up, Turn Pike. For some reason he was getting cheap. Funny thing he beg me to stay & said, show me the money$ Good contractors are hard to find anymore even to work with. Big developer I work for only 4 months, I had enough, they were cutting so many corners. They were taking quantity over quality. And they said I was taking to long to do the job. And I said, this is crown molding & your new construction of these new ceilings are not level! @#@&^%$$ I said! LOL! PS# I have a dream, if I hit the BIG lottery, I would set up a scholarship funds for Trade Schools. AI is coming! Trade Schools is the way to go...

Why wouldn't Mr. Holmes use the drill bit which is specifically made to install every drywall screw at the correct depth? I was quite surprised he didn't mention that such a bit exists AND that it's the only bit that should be used to install drywall screws.

I would be the same way. If Mike Holmes showed up and said he would make it right, and then called me and said he needed a little more time, I would have said the same. Take your time big boy. I trust you.

Why isn't this home renovation contractor being prosecuted by the authorities? He's been doing it for long enough and to enough people. Thank goodness there's Mike Holmes.

Because they didn't have an ironclad contract that specified exactly what needed to be done in order for the next payment to go through, he did just enough work to not be considered criminal fraud. That's what that lawyer was saying. The scammers know the law better than their victims so they can skirt as close around it as possible.

i’m an engineer, but admire the trades and wish i was a craftsman/carpenter. this kindof slop just irritates me. i’m not always completely satisfied with code minimums either.

The days before he was able to work with a limitless network budget & materials donated by the manufactures in exchange for product exposure on the show. The homeowners still paid for the work being done. I've never seen him installing tile over a membrane outside of a bathroom, however I'm surprised he didn't laydown durarock first.

It's shocking at 21:56 where the lady claims She Left her Husband and her Daughters because she Needed some Time to Herself. Again at 26:26 she admits she left them as she couldn't cope with them. So She's the Victim here? Not the Family?

I don't understand why Mike kept extending in small bits. Just do one big extension and then try to finish early. When he first estimated the time, I thought ~3-4 months. When he said 2 months, I thought he must have a lot of crews working simultaneously. Just guess long; you know stuff will come up.

Cold snap, so I'm on the sofa with blankets and old favorites to keep me warm. The only way this scam could be worse if that company waited for this house to default and then picked it up to repair and flip.
