Homelander won't ever just laser Butcher because he's honest towards him. Notice how much Homelander HATES being lied to, but will respect and even spare someone who tells him the Truth. Go back to Stilwell's death scene Pay Attention to how Homelander shouts and curses her out in front of her baby but calmly and humorously talks to Butcher. Almost as if their about to share a beer. Hell Homelander even SAVED Butcher at the end of season 1. Because he's honest and never lied to him. Thats why Homelander didnt just kill Butcher, Edgar or Sage He may not like what comes out of their mouth but He respects them and their honesty. I love that in the Herogasm episode when Butcher and Homelander finally got to throw hands they briefly lock fist look each other right in the eyes and while Homelander is of course furious the look on Butcher's face is complete glee , his face is like yeah I finally get to throw hands with ya ass I've been waiting 😂😂, also yeah i agree i think Homelander sees them as Frenemies he could have killed Butcher long ago but yeah he sees him as a worthy opponent even though Butcher is human

Butcher isn't afraid of him. Everyone else is. That's what makes the unhealthy kind of " relationship " if you can call it that. Butcher tells it like it is and doesn't walk on eggshells or bend over backwards for him. Homelander himself is getting sick of everyone doing things out of fear as you've seen recently ( spoiler season 4 its become obvious and is even shown). He at least with Butcher has someone who isnt afraid or who he can talk to and have a real conversation or fight with.He in his own twisted way needs ppl like Butcher instead of a bunch of cowering frightened yes men

Black Noir wasn't afraid of him either which is why he respected him too, was so upset when he killed him and told the rest of the 7 that Noir was worth more than all of them put together. Its also why he was completely freaked out when he heard Noirs heart racing when he saw Soldier boy and when Noir ran, it was the first time he ever saw Noir scared and it had him doubting if he could actually beat Soldier boy.

What I really like about this relationship is that it does the whole “we’re more alike than you think” trope between the hero and the villain without ever having to say the actual line. Butcher and Homelander are both manipulative and cunning, willing to go behind their ally’s backs to get what they want. They both have a particular glee in what they do but certainly have their breaking points. They both have traumatic pasts that forever shaped them into who they are now. And as of now, they’re both clinging onto the only thing that makes them human: Ryan. The only difference is Butcher is now opening up to becoming a father to Ryan and wants to look out for him both out of respect for Becca and to keep Ryan safe. Homelander, while you can clearly see does love Ryan, wants to control him because it’s the first time that Homelander has something that’s truly his

There’s a secret to surviving Homelander. Don’t lie to him IN ANY WAY. Everyone is totally fake with him. The handful of people who treat him like a normal person are the only ones who aren’t just toys. They’re the only ones who make him feel human. Notice how he killed everyone in the lab, except for the psychologist? Notice how he didn’t slaughter Stan Edgar? He doesn’t care whether it’s positive or negative, he just wants to feel normal. I almost hope that he survives the story, but loses his powers. He and his son could go into some sort of “witness protection” type of thing. Sorta like where Ryan lived with his mother. They could just have normal lives and be normal people. Vought made him into a monster. They owe him peace in his later years and he can’t get it until he loses those damn powers.
