The reveal of what the Therapists did to Homelander recontextualises a lot of his scenes with Stan Edgar. It makes sense why Edgar was never afraid of him since he knew Homelander had a literal mental block that meant he could never kill Stan.

@@Young_Ruckus In the episode it's revealed when he was younger the world's best psychiatrists went to work on him putting in mental barriers that essentially made Homelander desperate for love and approval, done so he wouldn't kill authoritative figures like Stan or simply destroy the planet.
@arsenal47394 ай бұрын
@@obsidianwarrior5580that’s actually scary. And what makes it worse is that since Homelander realized that if he never gets that love from humans, he can just essentially destroy the planet without any ease, it means that some parts of the mental block has either gone away or he’s overcoming it to an extent. It also could be that when he said that to Starlight, that it was just him threatening her but at the same time he can do it whenever he wants or if he loses everything so Starlight had no real position there. Either way, tremendously fucked up.

One horror trope that chills me to my bones is anyone being trapped in a room till death. Especially when there’s corpses involved. In GoT, they did something similar when Cersei traps Ellaria Sand with her daughter, while her daughter is doomed to a sure death. Knowing Barbara got to witness the grisly murders of her colleagues and then being trapped with their horrifyingly dismember bodies with almost no hope for escape is nuts. Also, what the fuck was she thinking? Why on earth would she admit that to an obviously unhinged Homelander? She severely overestimated the psychological card here. I almost, for a second, thought her manipulation would pull through and that she’d be able to almost mother her way out of it, I’m glad the writers didn’t pull back any punches and slapped us in the face with this.

I liked it how he made them adress him as Homelander while reflecting over the forgotten past except for Barbara who had to be reminded of the present time period at the end because she remembered the past in great details. The lab workers were still there, so there was no really regret or guilt from their part...

Yet at the same time, he has nothing to hold him back anymore. This scene is both ironic and poetic. Dr. Barbara talks to Homelander like his own existence is his own fault, throwing it in his face that he killed his own mother and the medical staff in the room when he was born, completely leaving out that they are the ones that made it happen. Compared to the other scientists, Dr. Barbara probably has the worst punishment, which is most likely tied to her admission of fault; Dr. Frank hurt Homelander as a kid, which resulted in him being burned alive, although his death was relatively quick, while Dr. Marty was humiliated for disturbing Homelander during masturbation, which he recalled being the only time he felt compassion. Dr. Barbara is left with the dead staff, trapped in the “bad room,” because she was very unwilling to admit her fault in all of this, as well as having the corpses surrounding her as a reminder that she has failed more people than she realizes.

There's nothing behind those eyes besides the seething, exposed and warped darkness of Vought's creation, if you can even still call it theirs anymore. With Homelander having a new perspective on his morality after seeing his gray hairs, nothing holding him back anymore psychologically, he can start anew for himself as this brutal, tyrant of a being, wiping out humanity one by one with his son at his side as he creates the legacy of a new, supe-filled world for him to adopt once he inevitably passes. They knew what they were doing to that child and were reminded of it when Homelander revealed himself in that elevator. And in that same moment, everyone knew that no one was going to escape alive. Yet, as he killed them one by one, we (at least, I) dont feel bad about it. Its fucked up yet we feel apathetic about it. The show tried to reason why the scientists did it through his convo with Barbara. It was out of fear. The show tried to make us sympathize with them, and then they revealed something. Barbara revealed something so fucked up. They psychologically altered his mind into needing of love and approval. They manipulated him, much to his nature, much like Clockwork Orange. Our sympathy went back to Homelander. And we watched his finished job.
