what is he going to do with a check, and the owner simply could have canceled the check with her bank. Does the news producer at wtnh know how checks work? Or did he/she take a sick day when this story was approved?

The '$10,000' was emphasized at the start of the story as if it meant something. Like the guy had a choice between the money or not. It's misleading. I'm still standing by my theory the news producer was out sick that day.
