I wouldn’t say closed ended questions, I think he leaves the questions open to expression, he leaves the question lingering allowing for the interviewee to interpret it how they will, his silence in between is louder than any words, it allows them time to think, gives them time to talk, allows them to feel they’re being heard! And in turn the listener feels the raw emotion in their voice and answers! It’s genius!

@@pinkpugginz i am sorry to read this. i would like to suggest something to you and anyone in your position. if you have HBO, watch something called 700 Sundays. its a Billy Crystal one man show. its autobiographical. he lost his dad when he was 15. Crystal uses wonderful metaphors for what that trauma is like. He talks to God and God tells him "this is the hand you've been dealt". oddly enough, once I came to that exact realization with those exact words, I started to come out of my grief [after 30 yrs] when I heard him say it, I am pretty sure my hair stood on end. Anyway, it is a tour de force that will make you laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time.

It hurts especially bad and it fucks with your head so much when your mother leaves... by her own choice. Just decides to walk away from 3 small children so she can be with some strange man and shoot heroin, and rob drug stores and go to prison. She feels no remorse bc she's still doing the same exact things 40 years later. After years of struggle and strife, I got wise. She only hurts and hinders me. I had to sever ties. I no longer let the past haunt me. And my future today looks so much better!

I’ve seen some negative comments from ignorant people who clearly don’t understand the field of sociology, so I just stopped by to say thanks Mark. Thanks for sharing these stories and for giving back to this community. You’re retired and could be on a beach in Malibu surfing but you’re not. You’ve chosen to give back and that’s wonderful. Thanks for using your talent and resources to document these people so that they’re able to leave their mark in history. What I got out of all the social science classes I've take is..... It's important to make the nuclear family important again. Most who suffer Badly come from single parents homes. When you have society telling young people they can ignore basic biology and structure and breakdown the moral fabric that society must have we will have a major problem with that society.

Bless his heart. He’s obviously in a psychotic episode. I worked in the mental health field in the mid-1970’s working with the criminally insane. I would cry every day just listening to them and wondering how the brain becomes so damaged from birth or as a toddler. Please don’t laugh at this young man. You never know when it will come to your house. 💔

Yes but I think he also has other issues too. A head injury that bad could really cause problems and then if he's got other mental issues like schizophrenia that could make it complicated when he adds in the 2 or 3 days he's been awake. He is the perfect example of a guy that should be taken into a housing situation for people with these issues. Don't force them to sober up first, just get them into a residence. Encourage the taking of psych meds when prescribed and then he'll start doing a lot better. He is poetic for sure. We don't do that now because there are too many Puritans around worried about people being high. It really keeps people like this out on the street.

Unfortunately, they are just criminalized now, the non profits that take them in as “patients “ seem to be few and far between these days possibly bc it takes so much federal funding and time to work with them. This one gets me. I have a younger brother who was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder 15 years ago at the age of 24. His psychosis presented itself very similar. This is why we need a mental health reform in our country.

I have Schizoaffective Disorder. It was the scariest thing I ever went through before I got diagnosed. I had no idea what was happening to me. I was extremely confused and hallucinating and talking “crazy.” I was so scared one night while having intense psychosis. I called 911 and told them I was really scared and kept yelling, “help me please! Oh god please help me!” The paramedics showed up, strapped me to a wheelchair and took me to the ER. Eventually I ended up in the mental hospital and began medication. It truly saved my life. Now I can function much better because of my meds. How is your brother doing now?

I am considered “high functioning” which means I can function pretty well. I have been on meds for it but could not tolerate the side effects. Anyhow, why do you ask?

The biggest mistake the US ever made was closing the mental hospitals because now they end up homeless or in jail instead of with nurses and doctors who care for them. A couple bad places ruined it for everyone and of course it doesn't help that Hollywood really profited off the haunted or evil mental asylum plot line in movies that most Americans believe that's real life. Now it's only churches that have places for them and they are few and far in between and hard to get into. Can you imagine being a parent of knowing that one day you will pass and your handicapped child won't have anyone?

I’ve never looked at them in a “bad” way, just almost never had any regard towards them, they were just there. My uncle’s mental illness was triggered by drugs and military trauma. Could be a similar situation here.

Offering your time as a volunteer with local charities that support the homeless or people suffering with addiction etc would be a good place to start. You'll meet the people who you'll be caring for as well as the health and support workers. From there you'll no doubt be able to find the best routes to pursue the professional training required and even be able to get some financial support for your education through apprenticeship or staff training schemes. Good luck with the future, I'm sure you'll do really well and help a lot of people. ✌

His mind may seem in a zone beyond itself, but he’s very aware of the questions being asked because he answers them very clear cut and concise! He goes off the deep end afterwards! One thing for sure, he knows he’s still a child down inside and he misses his mom! Maybe his illusions are a way to cut out all the pain and suffering he’s been through! One thing, he isn’t dumb that’s for sure! May the lord heal his mind body and soul for the sake of himself.

Note that Jaime doesn’t use any filler words. No “you know what I mean?”, no “know what I’m saying?” He can absolutely speak eloquently, if nonsensically. That’s unusual. Trying to save Colossus? My nephew played a video game called Shadow of the Colossus. It was a stark but soothing dreamscape wherein the player rides a lone horse and eventually must battle a Colossus, one by one. How many of us could survive a traumatic birth of some nature, a garage door head crush at 5, extreme addictions starting at 10-12? Not only survive, but to mentally adapt to street conditions, abuse and neglect and still keep going.

It’s more so a result of abusing crack for a long time and not sleeping for weeks on end. This is very common once they reach psychosis.

Yes! I'm in recovery and in early recovery I learned one of my first addictions (before ever picking up a drug) was fantasy, used as a coping mechanism. For him add on brain injury, extreme drug abuse starting at a very young age, lack of sleep and proper nutrition. It bothers me reading people in the comments diagnosis him with schizophrenia. It may be or may not be. I know a recoving addict who was misdiagnosed until a couple years in recovery and now has her master's in something to do with neuroscience and does not have any mental health issues. (not saying ppl with schizophrenia are incapable of getting a master's just pointing out she needed to clean up before immediately being diagnosed) there is a term for when people mix their reality with events/characters from shows, music etc. I can't remember what it's called. The saddest part to me was hearing him say "I miss my mom" a few times and wondering if anyone's ever told him that even though she's passed away she still loves him.

This man's brain is on a different level.. And not necessarily in a negative way. I feel like if not for the drugs and trauma he had endured, he would have been something great. He IS something great, he seems like a compassionate, open-minded human being - he has a way with words. You look at this man and you almost feel like he is going to sound incoherent... Until he actually begins to speak. He should consider writing and speaking poetry.

the first few questions the interviewer asked, he could barely get a word out of jamie. a few minutes in, jamie led the conversation. his train of thought is fascinating. i wonder if the tangents he goes on are made up on the spot. he tells stories in an interesting way. it’s fun to try and follow.

True, however, it is interesting to note that the responses were immediate, definite, and a flat tone until he felt safer elaborating. As a nurse I have seen his behaviors in individuals with schizophrenia, traumatic or drug use (can be by the patient or occurred en utero) related brain injury, and/or side effects of psychiatric medication. I hate to see him on the street. I have experienced plenty of people with similar behaviors find security, enjoyment and satisfaction with their lives in a living situation that manages their meds and routines and provides emotional support and safe socialization. They have the same needs as any human, and being homeless typically does not meet them well.

he went from killing mac miller to getting aids in some kind of accident to singing panda saying he made it to another life story and the train of thoughts made my head spin so much, he has so many stories i had to pause a few times because this is so disturbing to see.. to see someone being so out of touch like this, like, how could something like this possibly happen? it makes you think, so much. this video was so intense. i really, really hope he will find a better path somehow someday.

If he's not schizophrenic, or gone into psychosis then I'm a narwhal. He is in pain and it's like he drew all the worst cards imaginable in life. Painful to watch his face even for a second. There are so many people like this. I thought I would end up like this, I was doing shooting meth and heroin, smoking K2 and eating coricidin cough and cold 2 boxes at a time. I couldn't manage being sober, I was in some state of being f***** up for 10 years. and all that for years and years. Eventually I just got tired of it and wanted to change and I was able to pull myself out of it and somehow I'm coherent and intelligent with a 136 IQ. I feel blessed but seeing this breaks my heart, it makes me want to do something to help. I feel like i have PTSD, ive had my throat cut open twice, ive been stabbed with an icepick, I was on dialysis for 2 months from a bad batch of K2 that shut my kidneys down, I've had to fight for my life while somebody was trying to kill me and do brutal things to them that I didn't even know I was capable of to survive. You might laugh but I'm telling you the truth and maybe if you're young you'll avoid some of the pitfalls that I fell into. You can always change but you can never go back to being normal.

He said in his Interview that his confidence and methods of speaking with people in their vernacular, making it very clear he is no threat and being in the community for 15 years, they know he is a Good Man. Also, He is like 6’4 and if you watch enough videos, in Superb shape. You would Never suspect he is 60. In a fair fight he could handle himself No Doubt.

Oh this poor guy. He obviously has a TBI and the drugs have just wrecked his already compromised thought processes. This breaks my heart. I bet he got called a lot of names as a kid because of the TBI and that drove him to drugs. The history with his parents is sad as well. He's tweaked out of his mind though, poor guy. He'll probably die on the streets. My heart goes out to the poor souls out there on skid row.
