Often, when talking to people on the streets who have suffered more trauma than anyone can imagine, you have to read between the lines. Homelessness is hard. The brain has to say the world hates me, or I actually like to be homeless. After years of living outside without adequate housing, people learn to adapt.
Think of it like this: none of us goes to our high school class reunion, raises our hand, and talks about our challenges. We pretend that the world around us is all great when, in reality, we are suffering.
In this interview, James says that homelessness isn't that bad and the weather isn't that cold, yet he has paper stuffed under his hat to help his head stay warm. A few times, James shares in this video how the homeless in San Diego isn't that bad, but if you look at reality. He's disabled and without income. No place to go. Life is horrible. It shouldn't be like this. James, like all the other people who are suffering homelessness in our great country, should be in housing.
It's important to know that James is homeless in Las Vegas but because of constant harassment from police, he got on a Greyhound bus and went to San Diego. James says that the police in San Diego are not as bad as in Las Vegas, and maybe that's because he's disabled and new to the city, but the real truth is San Diego is one of the worst cities criminalizing homelessness.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

We will be held accountable for these people, God says in his word we are worse than the hypocrites if we don't care of our own. The only thing with this guy I have my suspicion. When it comes to the SSII believe you still gets it. Even if his bank account was hatch, the SSI office would still give him his check because it comes on a card. So I haven't had a hard time. Believe me that story with him. And I dealt with people with SSSI that are homeless most of them take their check. It's not very large very much but they spend it within the first week some I know the State of Ohio gives of 895 a month. Some people get less but for the bank account to be hacked and that's why he's not getting it. I don't believe that I'm sorry. I just don't believe that

@@Marlon_J that's exactly it. No one wants to be homeless. As you saw in this interview., after he told me that it wasn't that bad, I asked him if he had tried to get out of homelessness. He answered, yes. Everyone does. People first try to get out of homelessness, but they keep on hitting the wall of bureaucracy, and after a period of time they just give up and adapt to life on the streets. It's horrible and shouldn't be. We should prevent homelessness so nobody ends up on the street, and for those that do end up on the street, we need to get them off the streets into housing as quickly as possible.

I have been homeless for 5 years now and this opened my eyes to how nasty people are when your down on your luck , and how all these places like social services will not help you. Just look at this guy and how he has been treated left on the street like some garbage when he is a human being just like everyone else , yeah I am homeless myself but there are many people who like this man are in a much worse situation than myself and seeing this crap really is sick . So I have been thinking and started my own youtube channel to not only show others how I am surviving and how I have a compact system but to also start a go fundme to help myself get food n eat every day and to get a valid id & fix my truck so i can drive & get a job to support myself but after that I would like to raise money to help others like this man in this video get what he needs to get off the streets because he is suffering and I do not know about anyone else but this breaks my heart seeing this and not being in the position to help him so that's what I am going to focus my energy on with this youtube channel & go fundme , because all of these places agencies have all this money but do little to nothing to help homeless people

Like the Salvation Army 90 day ARC who will TAKE any food stamps from you. I was homeless staying there and found I had kidney cancer and trying to see my Dr. And set up surgery. Salvation Army accused me of LYING about my condition and my Dr. Appointments. Tried to force me to work on top of it. I DID HAVE CANCER and was able to GET OUT OF THERE and go to the V.A. My heart breaks for him. He just needs someone to hold his hand and walk him through the process. First we get birth certificate and government identification. Then we go to social security office and get benefits straightened up. He may be owed back benefits for months he wasn't paid. Then we go setup a bank account for direct deposit. Honestly, he should get Medicaid too because he is disabled and poor. States should give bank account help to folks that need it. I have issues with social security too and can tell you that the social security system is still running on software from decades ago. You can't get anything done unless you go into the office and wait in hell like some ancient DMV office. It sucks so much!! And if you need help or don't understand the process, you are like a ship lost at sea. I am so sick of being homeless. I'm exhausted from daily survival. Month 18 of sleeping in my car. Chronic homeless victim since 2009.

As long as we are getting the material things we want in life we will look the other way but heaven forbid if we can't get what we want. Rome fell because of greed and so will we.

Friends; One of the worst realities of becoming a homeless person, isn't the actual day to day, but the manner in which Society does in fact Silently Reevaluate exactly what you have become; an Individual, who is no longer a productive component of Society.. From experience; The moment that begins, you're Bombarded with multiple comments and the thoughts of others, and so sorry: Yes, the psychological effect can be ignored for a time, but the long-term effects do have a way of slowly tearing you down from the inside out. Yes, I went thru the same thing, but because I had a bit of mentoring, I did develop a plan to escape poverty, and after many years, im launchimg my small business, and I can see its already working. 🎉🎉🎉❤

All he has to do is go to SSI building tell them he no longer have a bank acct. (If that is true) his SSI can be put on a money card. Or he probably never received SSI and said it was stolen so people can feel sorry for him and give money...grifter. Our federal government seems content on making sure they get housing, but not natural born citizens. You have any comment on that? Because THAT seems to be the real issue here. your spot on. That’s the huge problem is that people need someone to help them navigate the system. And the system is broken. I think it’s like 75% of people applying for disability are refused the first time. Many of them have serious needs. Those that can afford a lawyer are able to fight the system. I think the other stat was like 85% of second applicants are approved, but jumping through that hoop to get a hearing for your application a second time is nearly impossible.

No one gets to homelessness, they are living outdoors as they were indoors

I see numerous people in this situation in downtown Vancouver, Canada and nobody helps them with getting decent accommodations. It's disgusting how the city and the community just sweep them under the rug as it were. This is one of the most affluent places in the western world and it looks really bad that they continue to be ignored. To add insult ro injury, we have local politicians saying there has been several billion dollars earmarked for providing housing. Yet there is no housing being built or made available. A very sad commentary on our society. No question about it.

I knew a couple of people who were allowed to sleep in the cars on car lots in one area. Then one guy decided he didn't want the homeless guy there anymore, and the homeless guy had a fit like he was being evicted. It doesn't take that much effort to help if you want to.

People applying for asylum are sleeping on the sidewalks too. Newsflash. There is no housing in America that people can afford, and the bullshit lies that is being spread on conservative, talk radio, and Fox News about immigrants getting more than homeless people is a flat out lie. Immigration is a serious and growing crisis. So is homelessness.

@@InvisiblePeople I Am botva Faux News zombie. the government is working to find housing for asylum seekers. If only they would be so diligent in seeking housing for citizens. There isn't enough housing to house the hemisphere. There isn't enough lumber to build the housing. There isn't enough land to grow the food or build the houses on. Finland, that place with no homeless has just built a fence to keep our the homeless that their historic enemy Russia has been bussing to their border. Did you see the last CBS 60 minutes.

You should change the wishes question to three prayers. Wishes do nothing. So sad for these people. Greed is destroying the world. It's destroying middle-class, but they started that two decades ago. That's the goal you will have the rich and the poor.

I truly feel sorry for the homeless seen on this channel, it is a complex issue and this gentleman seems like a decent man.....but I truly think half of homeless do prefer being unhoused, it matches the chaos in there head and life. Many, not all, most likely suffer from anti social personality disorder, aka psychopaths. I recommend reading, The Mask of Sanity, by Harvey Kleckly. Read the case studies of these people. Sheer chaos that can lead to being ostracized by society, 1-3% of people can be a psychopath...I feel we should help those we can, and realize unfortunately some are beyond help and need institutionalized. My humble opinion

I might be missing some thing here, but he said he doesn't get SSI anymore because his bank account got hacked. Why doesn't someone help him get a new bank account so that he can continue getting his SSI? Again, I may be missing something, but his SSI is either still going to the hacked bank account or is just waiting for him to provide a new account. Yes, I realize it's a challenge. But with someone's help, it should be possible. I love that there are interviews like this showing what homelessness is really like. I just hope that the interviewer can hook him up with some help or even even help him himself.

"trapped" in a wheelchair really? Wheelchairs are mobility and freedom for so many disabled people. This is beyond abilist. The only people who see wheelchairs as a trap are those privileged with able bodies. This is why people stare at you so uncomfortably as a wheelchair user, why I'm infantilized and disbelieved even though Im a 40 year old woman. Perpetuation of abilist notions that we are "trapped" or "bound" to our mobility aides ... They are AIDEs as in they help us with living in a world not designed for us so we can adapt. There is nothing wrong with adapting. Some may even call it a strength.😏
