Often, when talking to people on the streets who have suffered more trauma than anyone can imagine, you have to read between the lines. Homelessness is hard. The brain has to say the world hates me, or I actually like to be homeless. After years of living outside without adequate housing, people learn to adapt.
Think of it like this: none of us goes to our high school class reunion, raises our hand, and talks about our challenges. We pretend that the world around us is all great when, in reality, we are suffering.
In this interview, James says that homelessness isn't that bad and the weather isn't that cold, yet he has paper stuffed under his hat to help his head stay warm. A few times, James shares in this video how the homeless in San Diego isn't that bad, but if you look at reality. He's disabled and without income. No place to go. Life is horrible. It shouldn't be like this. James, like all the other people who are suffering homelessness in our great country, should be in housing.
It's important to know that James is homeless in Las Vegas but because of constant harassment from police, he got on a Greyhound bus and went to San Diego. James says that the police in San Diego are not as bad as in Las Vegas, and maybe that's because he's disabled and new to the city, but the real truth is San Diego is one of the worst cities criminalizing homelessness.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

@@Marlon_J that's exactly it. No one wants to be homeless. As you saw in this interview., after he told me that it wasn't that bad, I asked him if he had tried to get out of homelessness. He answered, yes. Everyone does. People first try to get out of homelessness, but they keep on hitting the wall of bureaucracy, and after a period of time they just give up and adapt to life on the streets. It's horrible and shouldn't be. We should prevent homelessness so nobody ends up on the street, and for those that do end up on the street, we need to get them off the streets into housing as quickly as possible.

I have been homeless for 5 years now and this opened my eyes to how nasty people are when your down on your luck , and how all these places like social services will not help you. Just look at this guy and how he has been treated left on the street like some garbage when he is a human being just like everyone else , yeah I am homeless myself but there are many people who like this man are in a much worse situation than myself and seeing this crap really is sick . So I have been thinking and started my own youtube channel to not only show others how I am surviving and how I have a compact system but to also start a go fundme to help myself get food n eat every day and to get a valid id & fix my truck so i can drive & get a job to support myself but after that I would like to raise money to help others like this man in this video get what he needs to get off the streets because he is suffering and I do not know about anyone else but this breaks my heart seeing this and not being in the position to help him so that's what I am going to focus my energy on with this youtube channel & go fundme , because all of these places agencies have all this money but do little to nothing to help homeless people

Like the Salvation Army 90 day ARC who will TAKE any food stamps from you. I was homeless staying there and found I had kidney cancer and trying to see my Dr. And set up surgery. Salvation Army accused me of LYING about my condition and my Dr. Appointments. Tried to force me to work on top of it. I DID HAVE CANCER and was able to GET OUT OF THERE and go to the V.A. PROGRAM for Veterans. People need to know about the Salvation Army. It's NOT what they think it is! Also, shelter kick you out at 0700 many are only overnight shelters.

We will be held accountable for these people, God says in his word we are worse than the hypocrites if we don't care of our own. The only thing with this guy I have my suspicion. When it comes to the SSII believe you still gets it. Even if his bank account was hatch, the SSI office would still give him his check because it comes on a card. So I haven't had a hard time. Believe me that story with him. And I dealt with people with SSSI that are homeless most of them take their check. It's not very large very much but they spend it within the first week some I know the State of Ohio gives of 895 a month. Some people get less but for the bank account to be hacked and that's why he's not getting it. I don't believe that I'm sorry. I just don't believe that

I find it interesting that our society talks about how good we have it here when disabled people are treated this way. What we care about and what we actually do are two different things. As long as we are getting the material things we want in life we will look the other way but heaven forbid if we can't get what we want. Rome fell because of greed and so will we.

Friends; One of the worst realities of becoming a homeless person, isn't the actual day to day, but the manner in which Society does in fact Silently Reevaluate exactly what you have become; an Individual, who is no longer a productive component of Society.. From experience; The moment that begins, you're Bombarded with multiple comments and the thoughts of others, and so sorry: Yes, the psychological effect can be ignored for a time, but the long-term effects do have a way of slowly tearing you down from the inside out. Yes, I went thru the same thing, but because I had a bit of mentoring, I did develop a plan to escape poverty, and after many years, im launchimg my small business, and I can see its already working. 🎉🎉🎉❤

your spot on. That’s the huge problem is that people need someone to help them navigate the system. And the system is broken. I think it’s like 75% of people applying for disability are refused the first time. Many of them have serious needs. Those that can afford a lawyer are able to fight the system. I think the other stat was like 85% of second applicants are approved, but jumping through that hoop to get a hearing for your application a second time is nearly impossible.

It's disgusting how the city and the community just sweep them under the rug as it were. This is one of the most affluent places in the western world and it looks really bad that they continue to be ignored. People applying for asylum are sleeping on the sidewalks too. Newsflash. There is no housing in America that people can afford, and the bullshit lies that is being spread on conservative, talk radio, and Fox News about immigrants getting more than homeless people is a flat out lie. Immigration is a serious and growing crisis. So is homelessness.

There isn't enough housing to house the hemisphere. There isn't enough lumber to build the housing. There isn't enough land to grow the food or build the houses on. Finland, that place with no homeless has just built a fence to keep our the homeless that their historic enemy Russia has been bussing to their border. Did you see the last CBS 60 minutes.

"trapped" in a wheelchair really? Wheelchairs are mobility and freedom for so many disabled people. This is beyond abilist. The only people who see wheelchairs as a trap are those privileged with able bodies. This is why people stare at you so uncomfortably as a wheelchair user, why I'm infantilized and disbelieved even though Im a 40 year old woman. Perpetuation of abilist notions that we are "trapped" or "bound" to our mobility aides ... They are AIDEs as in they help us with living in a world not designed for us so we can adapt. There is nothing wrong with adapting. Some may even call it a strength.😏

Monthly expenses, for me, I can't call it reasonable at 1400-1500 a month not including groceries or rent. My Soc Sec check is 1900 a month. Taxes are insane to pay for all the money the govt spends. This is where the problem lies, almost 35 Trillion of nat'l debt.

You know, if I'm really honest, it is so easy to lump unhoused people into the "homeless people" category. I know they are people, but in my mind they can be sectioned off. I'm a little ashamed of this. I sometimes have to consciously remind myself that an unhoused person could be me under different circumstances.

I'm not sure the exact particulars. I do know SSI payment have stopped to countless homeless people that truly need the money for really ridiculous reasons. I'm speculating here but it sounds like James just gave up. That happens a lot. Someone hacked his bank account and now he hast to go and set up everything new. That's challenging for people that have a phone a house in a car. For someone that's out on the street homeless, it's nearly impossible to reestablish yourself.

@InvisiblePeople That's all true. However, him being homeless in a wheelchair there are advocates to help the disabled. If it was my only income that could be available every month, I'd put that my first priority to get my bank situation in order. You have to do what you have to do. I hope you know someone who could help him. Maybe you could help him? Or get him help.

I think he is resigned to his fate and just takes life as it comes. He sees no goals to work towards. His SSI isn't enough to live on even if he had it. He probably makes more money panhandling. It looked like a lot of people were looking over at him like they wanted to give him something. I guess he can handle being homeless because he is still pretty young. I wonder why no one ever gave him a hat. Maybe the paper is to make him look more pathetic. Also, the wheelchair probably isn't needed if all he has wrong is a bad foot. It is scary when people who have nowhere to go are harassed just for being anywhere they can go.

@@jacobus57 starvation is not a solution to immigration. We can't allow people to die. It's a serious crisis in every state, every city, and every country. I get the frustration and I get house people falsely believing that immigrants are getting more than homeless people. It's pushed by conservative, radio and conservative television. For example, new York City is about to give $56 million worth of gift cards to immigrants. Conservative media is having a field day blowing this way, out of proportion with misinformation and propaganda. The city of New York has to feed people. By supplying immigrants and mostly immigrant families with a cash card, the city actually is saving money. The city is spending hundreds of millions of dollars feeding people which is logistically hard because you have to cook the food and bring it to people. By giving each person a cash card, which comes out to about $11 per person per day, it saves the city and taxpayers money. But conservative media doesn't share any of the truth. Now, before you say, homeless people aren't getting fed, homeless people can get food stamps. It's an ongoing program in the United States. Is it enough? No. We need to prevent and solve homelessness for everyone. Immigrants are sleeping out on the sidewalk so like homeless people and immigrants are being placed in the hotels like many homeless people are now. I really don't have answers and homelessness grow and immigration grows, they are both a crisis, but the immigration gets more than homeless people is not the truth.
