Homeless Man with Multiple Sclerosis Lives in a Tent in Echo Park Lake

Yesterday it was raining in Los Angeles. Although he lives in a tent homeless, Todd says he loves the rain. He is originally from Seattle, which explains his fondness for damp weather. Todd has been homeless in Los Angeles for six years.
Todd has multiple sclerosis (MS) and is in a wheelchair. Todd once lived in a retirement home, but he says it's not the best environment. Todd says because he is not going to beat MS, he's going to embrace it. Todd has decided to live his life instead of being in a board and care.
Todd had a place in Silver Lake then he was diagnosed with MS, and there was a problem with his social security benefits which is how he first ended up homeless. His mom passed away and left him a small trust fund but one of his brothers has held up the money.
One of the most frequent questions I receive is people asking where is the homeless person's family to help. I will often respond by asking "how was your last Thanksgiving, drama free?" Truth is, relationships are often difficult. Either there is some kind of conflict or often family members are struggling themselves.
Todd shares that people are scared of homeless people. That they drive by seeing tents and say to themselves they'll never be like that. That they'll never be homeless. Todd continues "guess what, you wake up with MS and the next thing you know you're living in a tent".
The day before this area was swept by Los Angeles Sheriffs and sanitation workers. I talked to a few homeless people and all said the sweeps were aggressive. One man shared how they took his cellphone and all of his belongings, which sadly is very common. Los Angeles continues to spend millions of dollars on 40 sweeps a day. These sweeps do nothing to end homelessness, they destroy people's lives by displacing them with nowhere to go, and they are a waste of taxpayer's money!
Invisible People supports Services Not Sweeps, an LA-based coalition made up of over 35 community organizations demanding that Los Angeles Police stop the aggressive criminalization of unhoused people. Click here for more information: servicesnotsweeps.com
NO ONE should be homeless in this great country of ours and no one disabled in a wheelchair should be living in a tent. ALL OF US need to speak up for our homeless neighbors.
Your voice can help end homelessness. If we do not fix the affordable housing crisis, homelessness will continue to get worse. Click here invisiblepeople.tv/getinvolved to tweet, email, call, or Facebook your federal and state legislators to tell them ending homelessness and creating more affordable housing is a priority to you.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

You do a tremendous job, dear Sir! I wish I came across your channel earlier! The topic indeed very much important. These people should become visible thanks to you! Maybe someday you could use my piano music in one of your vlogs! Would be honoured. I prefer writing calm and soulful, a bit sad music, but the key is that it comes from within, from the bottom of my heart. Hope to be useful in helping invisible people become more visible! Good luck to you Sir and have a great weekend! Hello from Ukraine!

2 things: 1. Why is it that it seems, from your videos and my own personal experience, that homeless people are far more fun and easy to be with than people we have to *cough* tolerate (without strangling LOL)? 2. His story of his family and family in general I'm sure sounds familiar to a lot of people. Sure does with me.

My aunt was homeless. There is NO WAY she would not be homeless. The family tried. Due to mental illness, she always returned to the street. How are you going to cure homelessness? Some people CHOOSE that, maybe through no fault of their own due to mental illness and addiction, but you cannot regulate people to try to do the right thing.
@nathalieloujein5959
@nathalieloujein5959 4 жыл бұрын
@@donnaleeclubb119 Yes, the government already DOES regulate people in various ways. There are laws on gambling, tobacco use, and drug use, to name a few. A person who is clinically insane and who insists on living on the street SHOULD be forcibly INSTITUTIONALIZED for reasons such as 1. for that person's own good so that person can get the mental treatments necessary. and 2. because the rest of us should NOT have to deal with potentially dangerous, imbalanced, and insane people loose in the public. This is not only a danger for the insane person, but is also a safety issue for the entire society.

I've had MS for almost 28 years, and I have difficulties living in my well equipped house! He is SO right, adult foster care homes, and nursing homes are nothing but a warehouse, for a population of people that society doesn't know what to do with them. I'm 57 and am able to stay in my own house, with a state paid aide 6 hours a day, 5 days a week. I don't know how he does it, it's so draining on your body, mind, and soul...

Sometimes to avoid probate, the parents create a living trust and choose one child to be the trustee as in my case (and with other people I find it's the greedy sibling who finagles there way in there.) I should look up what's wrong with probate?

I understand exactly what he means about being able to get better support and relatable conversations from strangers, rather than family who have all their own ego, pride, resentment, history and relationships tied up in any real conversation you try having with them.

I have MS and am turning 54 this month. My father stole all the money from our family trust. I will be homeless while he gets warmth, food, shelter, & medical in a old age home. I see people saying "why don't they ask for help from family". But there's a very good chance their family is part of why they are out there in the first place.

We need more people like Tom in the world. Tom, can you please head the revolution. If you could discolse to me where he is in LA i'd love to stop by and drop off some things for him and chat. I totally agree with everything he says regarding the "authority".

Todd Is 💯 Percent Right!!! With Respect To It's Easier To Talk To Strangers Than It Is To Talk To Your Family, "I Decided Around Last Year That Most Of My Money, 75 % Of My Hard Earned Money Is Going To The "HOMELESS" Not Them, Because, They Have Been Leeching Off Me, My Entire Life, I've Had It!!! THEY WILL BE "UNPLEASANTLY SURPRISED!!!"

I also have Multiple Sclerosis and I'm headed towards homelessness right now. I cannot work in my field anymore ( I'm a chef) because I cant walk more than a couple feet without falling. I'm losing everything. The world is cruel and cold and no one gives a shit about the disabled. We are just viewed as a burden.

*You do a tremendous job, dear Sir! Hello from Ukraine!*
