Homeless Veteran Lives in His Car in Los Angeles

James did one tour of the Middle East while serving in the Army. He told me one tour was enough. Somehow I can understand that. What I mean is that I have huge respect for the men and women who join the military but I can't even imagine what it must be like going to war. My heart goes out to everyone who has seen the madness of wartime.
Throughout this video, James became increasingly emotional. When I asked James for his three wishes, he broke down. I could literally feel his pain. It wasn't the question but that he has been holding in a lot of emotions. I sat with James for a long time after this interview and even went back the next night to check on him. I always get messed up when someone for wherever reason cannot come up with three wishes, but James's story really hit me hard.
James lives in his car at the Safe Parking LA located on the West Los Angeles Veterans Administration Campus. After his wife asked for a divorce, James decided to leave to keep the peace. He has been living in his car for about a month.
James calls people living in their vehicles "car dwellers" and shares in this interview that he is seeing mobile homelessness increasing around Los Angeles.
Safe Parking LA provides a safe place for mobile homeless to park at night. The folks behind Safe Parking LA told me they have been pitching the concept to Los Angeles County politicians for five years but only now is it being adopted.
If Los Angeles is ever going to end homelessness the stakeholders that make the decisions need to think outside the box and be open to new ideas that will help save lives and reduce costs. It's fantastic that LA County is now approving safe parking locations, but they should have been implemented when the concept was first presented.
Please help support safe parking programs in your community. If you'd like to support Safe Parking LA here is the link to their website www.safeparkingla.org

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as KZbin, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

Seems like it. There were a couple of others that were older but had all their hair and although disheveled, they spoke well ( said they were educated) and if in good health, would be definitely very striking. One was actually an out of work actor so it may just be several that are from other states wanting to make it in the movies but didn't and became homeless & dabbled into drugs/alcohol instead cause dreams squashed.

I hate that we've created a culture where we "must" put on a brave face because that's the ideal. And you know why we do it? To make others feel comfortable bc that's what we're taught to do. Says who?? F that. People hurt, we stuff it down, we smile & pretend while inside it's crushing our souls. We need to learn to be okay with tears and anger. We needed to learn that hundreds of years ago instead of living by these absurd rules.

@@mariarohmer2374 I absolutely agree with you . As a kid we were raised that crying was a sign of weakness and we were not weak. It’s not that I had parents that were bad or heartless, I just think that’s how they were raised as well. I changed that with my kids though . My kids are allowed to express their emotions, feelings and frustrations. And now my grandkids are open about how they feel. I’m glad I broke the cycle. No offense but thats why you'll never be one.. wealthy people who give are careful about where their money goes.. you have no idea from a 5 minute video what the real story is.. all you have is the bones (not even all of them) not the meat.. they say there are 3 sides to a story.. his, hers, and the truth which lies somewhere in between.. you're getting 5 minutes of only one side.. it's very nice to want to help all of the people in these videos but it's also extremely naive and irresponsible.. My advice for anyone wanting to help is to volunteer and if you only want to help monetarily then donate to an organization that provides them services (housing, job placement, substance abuse treatment, mental health assistance, education, teaching a trade, therapy, financial planning etc).. The one thing they don't provide that your money does.. drugs and alcohol.. it's sad but it's true.. many people who find themselves in this situation are there at least partially because of substance abuse.. not all but far too many to just be handing out money based on what someone can say in a 5 minute span.. that's naive and irresponsible..

Sophia Anatolios the amount of very specific “what ifs” you’re willing to go to is incredible. Rarely is it just one persons fault, I never said he’s innocent but you don’t just give up your rights during a divorce unless you’re a good man. Sorry but all I said was that what he did was honorable, but frankly changing the locks isn’t. If she felt in danger and had half a heart she’d have done that (or called the police) and made sure that he was okay too... not homeless. See most ppl wouldn’t want the father of their kids out on the streets in this situation. ESPECIALLY if she thought or knew he had PTSD, is using drugs, or a danger to himself or anyone else. You don’t just abandon someone you make a vow before god to. You don’t sacrifice yourself either but again it’s all just you trying to make up any reason to vilify a guy who clearly did something well beyond anything he HAD to just to please his ex. Sorry but ppl with problems or illnesses aren’t inherently bad, they need more help if anything.

He is mentally ill and violent... we had to kick him out because of it and he was homeless after he got all his belongings robbed a few times and he got attacked by a meth head we let him back home. We don't know what went on between them, he may be suffering with PTSD or other mental health issues that can put a lot of strain on a relationship. Good thing the VA is there to help him but he probably needed help a well before that.

I agree with this, especially in these time. Everyone is selfish to the core. I waited 13 years before I got married. We have no issues. Wait for a long period time before you decide to get married. You can just walk out the door with no problem. Wait for years like me.

Would love to meet James. I would take him out for a good meal and just sit and talk with him. It would be a honor to get to know him more. He seems so genuine and kind. Wish I didn't live 3,000 miles away. I posted this video to fb in order to spread awareness of the homeless issues in this country. Bless you James. I will pray for you.

I am pissed 😡 off too many veterans are homeless the richest country in the world. it’s so hard living on the streets when I was homeless I didn’t have a car couldn’t sleep in the shelters cause of my background I found a place at a train station where I could lay my head I feel so bad now for this veteran

Not sure why being a vet makes you mad. Why are you not mad that he did not stay in the military is he was in a branch? The government pays huge bonuses and gives many benefits to vets. It is rather obscene. Yet many choose to be homeless than continue to serve.

A veteran should never be homeless! A disgrace that after someone risks their life for his country we look the other way while they live on the streets.
